At this stage I'm also planning to go. I'm on the far south coast of NSW so I can either link up with "your" group if your going up the Princes Hwy or meet you on the Hume at Goulburn. Can make more concrete arrangements closer to the date. Regards, Pete.

Would the bathurst ride consist of a lap of the track/road, , im hoping to go but as for input ive only either been as far as ballarat ,cresswic,ect ,, or bordertown the other direction, , unless you need a guided tour of king island :biggrin: dont ask me for any directions ill get us lost :rofl:
having looked at Arnie's route it makes perfect sense and looks a good run.
The wife and I are still trying how to figure out how to fit two days of sight seeing along the coast in to a short five and a half hour trip, so much to see so much time to do it in :rofl:
We will leave on the Sunday morning so we get home around 3 ish in the arvo.
Goulburn to Lithgow is a great run.

talking about turns, watch out for that friging turn after Rylstone just before heading into the valley, blind right hand turn over a lip with a steep decent all in about 20 feet wooooo f'ing hoooooooo
good place to pick up used motorcycle parts, last time we went through a girl had just had an off and both she and the bike were in the middle of the road, not good as we know and enjoy this corner and we were not exactly going slow :(
Looking at Google Maps some more, and pondering time/distance
this might be better taken in 3 travel days up to Bellingen.
Stopping at Cootamundra 1st night, Muswellbrook 2nd night,
and arriving Bellingen on 8th ready to rally on the 9th.

Arnie was reading your posts about which route to take, Harvy is spot on about sofala bylong valley, if you southerners decide to take this route and stay at Muswellbrook you are welcome to stay at my place will be able to round up afew beds and a barby and a shower, live 20k out near Denman(500m dirt driveway)alternatively if you decide to stay in Muswellbrook make sure to book early Accom can be hard to get at short notice, cheers looking foreward to having a beer with you guys, Mark
We all know that mere ownership of an FJ makes you a man of steel behind the bars (in a land girt by sea anyway) and IF we chose to we could show up those tin foil arsed Iron Butt pussies driving their mobile lounge furniture when it comes to time in the saddle. But back to back 750 k days might not suit everyone and I think it would be prudent to ride to Bellingen over 3 days. If the weather's nasty and your foul weather gear isn't up to it, it can be a very long day and we want everybody fit and ready to party on the weekend.
While FJ ownership also offers immunity from crook knees, dodgy hips, bad backs and irritable prostates, not everyone is a seasoned long distance rider and 1500 k's over 2 days can be pretty tiring and we want it to be fun getting there as well.
I'm sure no one's told the Kangaroos and we would be advised in that part of the world to be well settled for the night by dusk and enjoying that other great riding activity, beer and bullshit.
As there would be no consensus on where, when and by what margin speeding would be appropriate, travelling at the speed limit, sort of, would be wise, throw in coffee and leg stretch stops and being done for the day before dusk, 500k days would be pretty comfortable.
As for the route, I have no suggestions outside Victoria. The "Interior" to me has only ever been a rat run back to Vic when you party to the very last minute on holidays then get in the car and drive 2000 k's nonstop with your foot to the floor via the shortest possible route, straight through the middle, and roll into work 20 hrs later just as you're sobering up.( Aaaahhh, youth! )
There appears to be plenty of FJers with knowledge of that part of the country and with several months to finalise it I'm sure it will be a great ride.

I'm in but am trying to convince my sweetheart to come along too.Not sure if she will be in it yet but if she does it wont be pillion.It will be either on her cbr900rr or on my thunderace (I hope thats not against any rally regulations! :shok:).
As the 2012 kenilworth rally attendee's know I did the full 1200km trip from Sydney with some rather nasty weather for about 1/3rd of the trip in about 16hrs trying the man of steel,almost iron butt thing and to see if I could.In hindsight,while I proved to myself that I,and the fj could do it,I really was tired the next day during the rally so I would recommend to 2013 starters to take your time and be well rested for the rally to get the full enjoyment!.I'm pleased that the 2013 rally is a bit closer to home and looking forward to seeing every one again and meeting some new Fj'ers!

Im in......winter here in Toronto is not great for riding bikes or golf and since my work is seasonal (in Canada that is).....February and March are the best months to globe trot. I have spoken to the better half and she is cool with it...so I will be there. I will send my 50 bucks to the lodge this weekend.....and get started on planning my Quigley downunder. I am planning to stay for 3 weeks but where exactly is still on the drawing board. Doug and I are still trying to fine tune the details but I have always wanted to see a real Drop bear and see if the toilets actually spin counter clockwise.......... :mocking: . Look forward to meeting most of you .....(as I am sure not all will be able to attend)......easy Klav..no reading between the lines now..... and I will be bring a spoon with me for my protection........

Apart from tired suspension most of the stuff I need to do is minor and preventative type maintenance which I can do ok over a couple of weekends. Although I wouldnt mind a fellow FJer taking a look at my bike and giving an opinion. Perhaps us southern FJers should catch up asap. I'm assuming also the plan for the rally is for us riding up from Vic is to arrive at Bellingen on the friday night?

My intention is/was to book Bellingen for Friday & Saturday nights. Start the run back home on Sunday, but I'm open to persuasion.
Happy to go over your bike with you before. I might even have some bits that would improve your suspension kicking around. I'm also not fussed about riding with other brand/style/type bikes unless they require fuel stops every 100kms or attract lots of constabulary attention.

Looks like there`s a number wantin to join the Rally from Overseas. The committee is a little flumoxed.
- One of tha applicants even wants ta bring the whole flamin family - when I was really only invit`n his Missus. So ta be fair all recent applicants have ta pass the following test before being considered.

I agree with the beer, that's why I started brewing my own years ago :drinks:. Hard to keep up when you can't swing a cat now days and not hit a micro-brew joint so I have not brewed in years. I would rather ride on my weekends.
I will challenge you on the Vegemite, earlier this year Baldy (Our eternal gratitude to him for gracing our humble home, not a single piece of silver was missing, we counted...) brought my wife some goodies from Aussie land including a proper size jar of the best toast topper in the world. It tasted as good as the stuff they sell here. Besides, my wife would have called foul years ago about the lack of proper kick. That said, I think it would still taste better on toast made down under.... Especially just before a rally ride....

The above post had a great affect - Bozo, Chromeaxe and Candyman paid their deposits. (still a few ta go). Problem is Baldy got so excited he didn`t notice a lady driver going thru a give way sign this morning on the way to work.. Sad ta say His bike is a mess but so pleased Baldy is okay and released from Hospital late this arvo with minor strains and scratches.. Lady Driver`s ears are yet to recover.

It wasn't that I was that excited the silly girl wasn't paying attention and didn't see me, looks like the bike has some serious damage to the front end, forks are bent, had just spent $1500 having them upgraded, not very happy!!!

Was just taking my time going to work when out of the blue this cager just drove str8 thru the give way sign and as I had the bike already tipped into the cnr there was no where to go! crunch, jumped up going right off my titts @ the female driver :mad: had to appologise after I calmed down :sorry:

I am very lucky the General has offered me one of his FJ's for a couple of weeks so will be on the move again shortly, not having all those mod cons on the bike will be a little hard to get use too but after the US this yr won't take long :yahoo:

Now, I've just booked the Fri-Sat nite at Bellingen, and before then I should have the FJ ready. On the weekend the rear valve stem started leaking, not the valve but the rubber stem. Moved it about a bit then BANG off it flew. Mini explosion right next to my head. Since the tyre came with the Suzuki rear wheel a few years ago, both the tyre and the stem are probably way past their use by date. Time for a new rear, (Dunlop RoadSmart II I think), plus a new chain.

Fork Brace-- mmmmmm nope, Instead you should get the vibranators, springs and valves money much better spent, put the springs on the bike in the US on the 2nd day of the WCR (unbelievably good) much better then the Race Tech and gold valves, Vibranators went on before the trip back from Colarado ..... Just what I needed Doug, some good opinions. I was actually tossing up about the fork brace, and thought seriously about the Vibranators, but wasn't sure actually if they worked or not. I did research the fork springs and the valves, my Progressive springs are around 7 years old now, probably not working as well as new now! Mmmm, might adjust my order a bit. The right angle valve stems will be going on with the new tyre, :good2:

Bugger!!! I am guessing that is more than twice the book value of your bike. How much repair can you (or a mate) do on your own to cut the cost down?
Well, that just sucks. What will you do now? I assume the woman who hit you had insurance and it will pay you -yes?
Will the insurance companies down your way let you buy the 'wreck' back after paying you for the total loss? Is it possible/ (practical?) to fix it and re-certify it so it's no longer considered a wreck? This can all be done in the US, and is easier or harder depending depending on the state you live in.
Again, count your lucky stars that it's just the bike that needs that much work, so, you got THAT going for you at least...

Monkey the bike is 2005 FJR which is insured for $14000 so its fixable, have just had word they will repair the bike, the shop has said will also fix the suspension so it will have all all the good gear in it again, so that $7,800 is going to go up to the tune of another grand lolol!!! :gamer: :yahoo:

I'm sure Klavdy is a stand up guy......but I haven't had the pleasure yet........... He invited himself to visit me in Toronto but when I posted my coming to visit the gang in Australia......didn't get much of a welcome wagon. Maybe I was raised with a different set of values but I have always embraced the Golden rule......but I guess if you only play by your own definition of social etiquette the sky's the limit. I remember recently extending my sympathies to a member who had been involved in a terrible accident with his bike and never heard a single word back. Now if was me....I would have made sure to thank the person for their kind gesture. I guess maybe some believe that respect comes when you elevate yourself with the turn of your own key. As for me... I give it when it is deserved !!!!!

For those who may be having difficulty in translating my words below into 'Strayin', (Baldy) I did not make, intend, nor imply any criticism of Klavdy.
My point was, and is, that "Super Hero Member" status (which I also have been tagged with) only seems to require x number of posts to this list. It is obviously not an indication of value.
And, Klavdy is a big boy fully capable of defending his 'honour' should he feel slighted or attacked. I'm sure that he's comforted by your ready (although totally unnecessary) defense. Chill, man.

Klavdy may well be a terrific bloke in the flesh, but for those of us who can only form a view from his posts, there is only so much bile and nastiness that can be written in the name of humour.
He seems to effortlessly live up to his moniker as the most offensive individual and given the things he has said to and about people over the last few years I find it amusing that you should come to his defence because someone MAY have hurt his feelings.
For those of us who will only ever know him through his posts it is understandable that he comes across as a complete prick, or, to give him the benefit of the doubt, he has created a "character" .
Either way, having made that bed, he now has to lie in it and it's a bit rich you defending him when a bit shit comes back his way ( which it didn't)

(Lives in Urunga) Apparently there`s quite a write up on the FJ Rally in this months "Old Bike" magazine. Includes a pic (Red & White - dam it) and details on the legendary model with the bulletproof motor. Asked if he could join us for some refreshments Sat arvo, and would park the "Legends" Aussie equivalent near the FJ petting area at tha Bellingen Valley Lodge if anyone was interested. To be honest can't answer this question rooms can be shared to reduce the cost , there is a pretty good pub in town that is reasonably cheap, I'll call the motel and see about camping in the area, I would be surprised if there was nothing available, hope this helps somewhat.

Hi Baldy.
That was me asking about camping. When I heard about the rally I had in my mind the events I used to go to when I was a little younger. You know - a paddock miles from anywhere, rock bands till 4 am, titty girls, open bar, crashing out next to the bike cause you didnt get the tent up when u first arrived and waking up freezing, hung over and covered in dew. I didnt realise this was a 5 star turn out but I promise to behave if I make it. I actually prefer to camp and I dont think I would make any friends with my snoring if I stayed in a cabin. Looking foward to it if I can get the bike on the road by then.

Hey Stu, Ya not the only one by a long way. In fact i prefer cabins or tents. But nuthin like a bit of class now & then, especially with pillions that have butts of steel. There`s plenty of pubs I continue to camp at. One of my favourites is owned by the King family and has an observatory out the back. (Nahh, I don`t mean a hole in tha pub shower wall). We tent there in winter at least once a year when they roast a pig on tha footpath and the local darts club hires some music.....Oh yeah ...am I light on me feet when it`s thumpin and tha fire`s a raging. And and and ..... all those country girls know us old blokes are very safe. Hehehe

Yea! got ya... It`s the Maiden Well pub at the base of the Bunya Mountains. It`s got a double fire place and an Astonomy type observatory at the back. Fantastic pub. (around the corner from Cooyar falls) Ta give you an idea of the culture - one Sat`dy night when the pub was jumpin (...well at least i was) I noticed two or three young ladies (say early twenties) in their dressing gowns and slippers. I asked `em what the story was and they looked at me like (wtf) strange. - each one had a different story but generally it was "well I only live down tha road and i knew Aunty Ethel would be at the pub - so thought I`d say good nite - before i went ta bed" then they give me a look that said "Durrhhhh!" ..... Going to get the new chain from "Feked" in the UK, mate across the road got one 6 months ago for his GTS 1000 Yam, no complaints so far. Probably get the X-ring, around 60 pounds + delivery for the
110 link 530 range. They are SSS brand, have read some good reports on them.

I would be very interested in your feed back on the Vibranators I put mine on a few weeks back but have not synced my carbs yet so I can't really tell how much of a difference they make.
I'm hoping they work as well as some of the feedback I've read on their website etc. I know some of the vibes I get are from the worn chain, some from the engine mounts/engine. Currently have the handlebars stuffed with lead sinkers :wacko2: (they don't really work). But I will know straight away if the vibes are less or not once the Vibs go on.

Ray, you are heading down the wrong path here. I recently said in a discussion about best model, that all other things aside, the smoothness of the 3XW alone does it for me. 3XW's DON'T vibrate. At highway speeds in particular they are turbine smooth.
When I first got mine I had the fairing off every other weekend, used kilometres of foam tape and generally spent a silly amount of time chasing buzzing and vibrations.
Then, like a religious awakening, I discovered the engine mount fix. I could not believe the difference, and with the source of the vibration eliminated, all the buzzing stopped.
You don't need vibranators because there is no vibration to tame.
There are many stories here from late model owners who talk in terms of disbelief at the difference it made.
My mirrors, for example are as clear at speed as when it's parked. Previously I would avoid the top end of the tacho unless necessary just because of the vibes.
Fix the cause and you eliminate the effect.

I agree with Noel to a point, I did the engine mount fix and it did make a dramatic difference but I still notice a minor but somewhat annoying vibe mostly when the carbs haven't been synced for a awhile (yes I know sync the darn things but I am busy and haven't had to to do it lately), but wait there is more :biggrin: I still have a slight vibe which hopefully the bar ends will assist with.
I guess each bike is different so each will have a combination of fixes.
Noel sounds like his is a really nicely setup FJ, whilst my 92 still has some emotional issues :biggrin:
Well, I agree with Dave to a point, but find the carbs and chain add roughness more than vibration. I know, I'm being pedantic, but higher frequency vibration, the type generated by seized engine mounts, goes right through you, makes your teeth chatter and your ears hurt and is what causes all the buzzing and roughness is, well, just roughness.

:good2: reading your explanation I agree totally and it has given me some food for thought, when I get my shit together I will have to sync the carbs and give the bike a general (not you Doug) going over, it's not bad by any means but a little TLC won't hurt.

Nothing to replace you just have to remove the mounts, clean, grease and rebuild, its harder building the simple tool required, which is described in a post on this forum somewhere.

Well just got back from a long ride after removing, cleaning and re-greasing the engine mounts on my 92 and all I can say is... HOLY F$#%&*ING SH&%#@T!!!!! What a difference!! I can't believe it. I couldn't stop giggling like a little school girl every time I twisted the throttle. NO vibration in my hands which used to tingle after a hour of riding. Smooth as silk. AndrewAndrew, I love this post. I have tried a number of times to get this message across to anyone that owns one of these models but I've clearly been too conservative with my language. Your description is excellent and to anyone reading this who hasn't done the mod, he's not exaggerating.
The word you used, HOLY F$#%&*ING SH&%#@T!!!!! describes the feeling perfectly. I wish I'd thought of it at the time. Perhaps it could join "kookaloo" in a list of FJ specific words.
I've said it before, this mod didn't improve the bike, it transformed it.

A number of people here have given up when trying to remove the collars seems impossible. DON'T GIVE UP. Do what ever it takes. It's worth it.
I have done 2 bikes, one came relatively easy, the other you'd swear had been cast as one part.
I ended up making 3 pullers, each one stronger than the last.
Puller Mk111 could have extracted the crankshaft through the exhaust pipe and with the help of much leverage I was able to apply enough torque to shift the earth's axis. Finally, with an almighty "crack" it let go. I expected to see half the crankcase and a couple of cylinders sitting on the floor.
Oddly enough, the difficult one was the low mileage bike that had never spent a night out in the weather in its life.
When done, and as previously stated, it will at first be disbelief at the improvement then give way to a smile you can't get off your face.
You can now use your mirrors.
Just what you wanted, a crystal clear vibration free image of your shoulders and elbows

I fitted these when doing the mounts and used them for the first time a few months back. It was very satisfying seeing grease oozing out uniformly from both ends.
It was a very quick job and much better done while the collars are out.

Ray, you are heading down the wrong path here. I recently said in a discussion about best model, that all other things aside, the smoothness of the 3XW alone does it for me. 3XW's DON'T vibrate. At highway speeds in particular they are turbine smooth.
When I first got mine I had the fairing off every other weekend, used kilometres of foam tape and generally spent a silly amount of time chasing buzzing and vibrations.
Then, like a religious awakening, I discovered the engine mount fix. I could not believe the difference, and with the source of the vibration eliminated, all the buzzing stopped.
You don't need vibranators because there is no vibration to tame.
There are many stories here from late model owners who talk in terms of disbelief at the difference it made.
My mirrors, for example are as clear at speed as when it's parked. Previously I would avoid the top end of the tacho unless necessary just because of the vibes.
Fix the cause and you eliminate the effect.

Been here before it is one of the most important things to do, especially if the bike has been ridden it the rain,it is amazing how much difference it will make in the smoothness of the engine.
I did put these viberantors on my US FJ and it did smooth out the annoying little vibe you get @ about 140 to 150kph, good choice Ray.
if you want a hand to do this can help out did it every 5000 K's on my 93 when i worked out greasing it and cleaning made it smoother.

I know what you are saying Dave, and I did some maintenence things ( new plugs/oil change/fuel filter) before the Kennilworth run earlier this year. Since then the poor ol FJ has gone to the shops, thats about it. So now its time to spend quite a few hundred dollars on some proper gear, and be really prepared. (Sorry Mrs X-Ray, I will get you that new cooktop and washing machine soon, I promise :flag_of_truce:)

Re: vibration issue, I noticed the topic is for 3XW Fj (91 onwards), does any of this information apply to the 1989/90 3CV version which appears to have a solid block on the RHS (no internal sleeve) with a spacer going the the LHS rubber mount. I have the same vibration you gents experienced before the engine mount fix. I have read the engine mount fix column but it again refers to the 3XW.

I don't think the previous models had the same design mounts at the front of the case.
I could be very much wrong here, and I'm sure someone will correct me if so :-)
Another source of vibes is the bolts that hold the lower frame cradle to the main frame. These bolts can strip, or snap without it being evident, especially the ones behind the footrest plates. Check 'em.

Arnie, thanks for replying, I just had the engine out a couple of weeks ago, so I'm certain these are not a problem. I guess I was hoping there was something much simpler.
I'm swaying towards the chain and sprockets but they still look good (they have covered a lot of kms), I'm using a hyabusa chain which doesn't appear to stretch but after todays >300km ride thats where the vibration appears to originate. Just in case you ask, all wheel bearings are new and the new tyre has been balanced.

Sounds like yours is the same setup as my old 86 1tx.I haven't found any threads on the forum to suggest any upgrades ppl may have done to this setup to smooth out the vibes.Both the frame and lower rails are different to accommodate the later pivot/bush style engine mounts,so its not an easy bolt on upgrade. I have installed the vibranator bar ends http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=M%2FC%3AVibranator (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=M%2FC%3AVibranator) and use the spongy foam grips which help
ALOT for vibration at the bars but didn't smooth it out completely(at a guess 15-20% improvement). I also found steeper gearing on the sprockets (lower rpm) help with vibes on the freeway too,and for rattling farings,lots off rubber washers on all the mounting bolts and stick on black rubber sponge cut to suit where plastic parts overlap.I have been contemplating knocking the solid RHS mount and using nolathane bushes in the front to see what improvement/detriment might happen (hopefully not the engine falling out!).Maybe someone else might chime in...(popcorn)

I am going on my 1200 leaving Nowra South Coast travel to Goulburn then up to Black Springs 6 Km's (last Oct) gravel then into Bathurst via the Mountain for 3 laps then work the back way out to Bellingen. Hi Jeff, thankyou for your feed back, done all that, the vibranators work well around 110kph to whatever, unfortunately they bring the slightly harsher vibs to 80/ 100kph range. I am a bit fussy because my other bike (Z1R Kawasaki) is smoother below 120KPH but then again it vibrates above that, so I have two bikes with back to back characters.
To be honest I can live with the FJ vibs so they are not bad enough to make me wish for something better (not like my mate with his new Harley, he rides in 4th gear because it vibrates badly in top at 120kph).

Yes, I know this is of an '86, but the picture is much clearer.
Anyhow, if you made (or had made) parts # 40, 41, 43 in some other material you might move the vibration to a rev range that is less objectionable.
Can we assume that your bike's valves are all within spec and that the carbs are balanced?
If not, do that first.
Also worth checking: Drive chain tension and sprocket tooth wear can also make the vibes worse.
Go shopping and try to find a pair of gel gloves to absorb the vibes.

Arnie, just re-coed the engine, all valves are like new / lapped and shimmed correctly, the carbies have all butterflies opening evenly and the idle jetting - still needs to be done, so that might have a slight affect (one plug is slightly richer then the other three that are even grey).
Gel gloves/ maybe the New Zealanders will advise me to use sheep skin grips. :mail1:
Just looking at the diagram of the FJ1200 engine, I'm wondering whether part No 40 should be tight onto the engine block or able to rotate??(as the mount on the 3XW is able to rotate on a bush). Mine is very tight.

Any change you make to the mount and collars will be in the "suck it and see" category.
Perhaps there's an engineer on this forum who could make reasonable predictions about what the effect on handling and vibration modifications to the engine mounts will produce, but I am not that engineer. :-(
I'm just a guy with experience of both the Norton Isolastic system (on the Commando) and the late model FJs. I would guess that changing to a urethane or bonded rubber part wil change the rpm range you feel the vibes. It might also make the nice solid feeling FJ feel like a Vincent Black Widow or Kaw H3 when you get to the first set of twisties.
Best of luck in your quest for a turbine like FJ.
Oh, get the carbs sync'ed before you put any $$ or huge slab of time into changing the mounts. Syncing might make all the difference you want.

The track is wet in many places, the car won't turn...and dad is following right behind him; my heart sinks but he saved it.

During the recent foul weather from ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald I managed to complete the front engine mount collar removal and re-grease on my 3XW that I witnessed during our small get together for 'Manshed Therapy' at The General's place on January 20th. Both collars were seized, bone dry and slightly corroded but they released with my gentle persuasion, cleaned up pretty well and once greased they slid and rotated very well in their positions. Who would have thought you could get such a good result from what seemingly is such a small issue. My bike now runs and rides smoother and with less vibration. So, a big thank you to FJowners.com and especially to those members who have contributed to this particular maintenance issue. And a very big thank you to the Aussie blokes at 'Manshed Therapy' for showing me the way. :yahoo:
It works well Stainsey thats for sure. I tried to do some work over the weekend while it was pouring, got too loud in the shed, had to get out of there! Still have to do the oil cooler mod and possibly the chain/sprockets before the Bellingen trip, :drinks:

Wow, time is running away from me at the moment. The FJ is still in a few bits in the shed, its pissing down with rain, can't do any painting etc, Faaaarrrrkkkkk!!!!!!!!
Taking the headers and collars in tomorrow to get ceramic coated, when the rain stops I'll start cleaning/repainting the engine and frame downtubes, THEN I'll get stuck into installing Randys beaut looking oil cooler kit. I can't install the new cooler kit when the engine looks as grotty as it is, :lol:
I'll be doing the ride with a still weeping fork seal, looks like it was only a temporary fix we did Harvy, oh well, will get it looked at when I get back. Oh and once again, PISS OFF RAIN!!!!!!!! :mad:

Aaah, the magic of camera trickery and complimentary lighting. Very nice of you to say so Ray but it's a long way from that. I did however dismantle it until just the frame, engine and wiring remained to detail it as soon as I bought it four years ago. Trouble is I ride all year round and frequently ride dirt roads. My next planned ride has a 200km dirt section so it will either come back with dust in every nook and cranny or if it's wet it will look like Dogtired's Triumph - but not for long!

Wire it up to the headers - I reckon probably about 200km per side, maybe 300 for the first side as it's frozen. Voila, after a day's ride, dinner all ready...

I seem to remember a cookbook many years ago that had recipes you could cook on a vehicle manifold.

Yep, seen a few videos of people driving in the outback here with potatoes/meat etc wrapped up in foil, wired to the exhaust manifold on their 4WDs, get to wherever and theres a hot meal. Seems to work I guess.

Yes, the inside of my forearm, just below the elbow. I cooked it rare, I wasn't going to hang around and wait for well done.

Yeah I always use a socket extension now, but I did cook a bit of Roo on it....once. Not sure if it tasted like shit, but it sure smelled like it!

Peta's mum had a fall this morning, tripped on the oxygen cord, broke the top of her femur where it joins the hip.
She is in hospital awaiting the decision as to whether she is going to have an op or not (considering the Emphysema, COPD and recent heart attack).
At the moment I'm still in, but just have to see how the next few days pan out.

Jeez Harv, its one thing after another when these things happen. Hopefully all will be ok.
Oh well, got the FJ finished this weekend, oil cooler is in, ceramic coated headers done, (inside and out), ran a clay bar over the paint etc. Still hasn't stopped raining to go for a test ride but just starting the engine to check for oil cooler leaks showed none at the fittings etc, phew!. Now if its raining next Friday I will be extremely peed off, but hopefully the sun will be out, and we'll all have some fun, yeeehaaaaaa.

Mate I got some business happening in Ballina thursday night, so staying there at a mates place. I understand, a few meeting at Beaudesert Macca`s for a 9 Oclock departure. Depending on any hangover, i might get away early enough to head inland and catch'`m somewhere around Casino? So if you`ve booked a room and since had a mate say he`s camping with ya - Better check there`s 2 beds in there. (eg I just changed Harvy`s booking cause they had him down as a single bed - hate ta tell ya the picture that put in my mind :lol:). I let`m know Craig & Horse are in my room. Kath says no prob to fix presently, but would like to know ASAP as she`s using the numbers to organise grub on Saturday Night.

table for Myself, the General +1, a mate +1 & one spare seat 1st in best dressed,
Friday is open to the public in the Restaurant, so its book yah own or miss out & eat in town, so be early & ring if ya joining us :good:
Water fall way is open & only closed when the water fall went over the road,
the New England Highway Via Tamworth & Armidale to Belingen, is the Waterfall Way.
If you go down the Grafton/Armidale road, it's pretty chopped up from all the recent rain.
Still good fun but.
Take the second turn off ,Waterfall Way itself not the "Bald Hills' road turn off, its a better ride.

I didn't do the chain/sprockets either Lord Baldy, that and the forks will be for another time. Which I just ran completely out of. Oh well, gives me an excuse to get back in the shed after we are back and play with the FJ some more. Still haven't been for a proper test ride, that will be on Wednesday, I like living dangerously eh?
Just had the FJ1200 sales brochures I ordered turn up, man they are mint. I'll see if theres a way I can pack them in my luggage without crushing them to bring down on the weekend.

Just went for a test ride to fuel up, man if they reckon that Maxima Synthetic Chain Guard lube doesn't fling off, I've got news for them! Have to clean the back wheel/tyre/swingarm etc now, what a mess.
Have a small noise coming from around the cylinder head, I have an idea is an exhaust tick from where I decided I didn't need to replace the gaskets. Pffft, dickhead! I've got them sitting there ready to go in, oh well, as soon as it all cools down I'll do them one at a time tonight. :dash2: Should fix it.

Update..following some tuff negotiation we have a new lunch venue without early orders required. The Big Dog Pub is offering BIG Dog Hamburgers and more at great prices. (Like Barra or Rump Steak, Chips & salad for $13-got Dogs eyes too!) Change arrival time there (Glenreagh) to 1.00 PM. :drinks:

the Motel is a coupla k's from town, it is walkable but its on the road, no path or lights.
I wouldn't attempt it crissed as a picket, there is a Taxi, but this is only a small town,
the usual go is byo drinks in the car park for a dribble session, then
some order Pizza delivery, some take the hike to town & pub it, & others like me (lazy/fat/to p*ssed to walk) eat in the restuarant,
it is at restuarant prices tho, but is "in the past" top food.
I would advise if doing the restuarant thing to let them know & book "soon",
let them know if you want to join the table booked :good2:
One other minor thing is, in the past there is no high oct unleaded petrol around Belingen,Dorrigo etc only tractor fuel & basic unleaded,

Do you run the FJ on premium?
Some are very fussy on fuel & have seen some long faces when they can't get their favourite flavoured petrol,
if you wan't High octane, I would fill up before leaving the pacific highway, its not far to Belingen from there,
the others will have to have what's there, there is only 2 servo's.
The only reason I'm advising the Friday night in the restuarant, is by Friday, you may not have a choice as it may be booked out :empathy3:

Mmmmmm, just went on another test run after putting in the new exhaust gaskets. No more tick tick from the old gaskets, just lovely induction noise and turbine smoothness, coupled with scarily rapid acceleration :yahoo: Gave the chain a wipe over with a rag, no more splatter either.

I just filled up yesterday with premium unleaded. I only do it because on the bike its only $2-3 more to put the good stuff in, and I reckon Noel it does give me a few extra kms per tank. I haven't done any proper sums to back this up. Plus the Premium is supposed to keep the fuel system/lines/carbies cleaner etc, unless everything the fuel companies tell us is bull. I don't normally use it in the 4WD, gets a bit expensive then, but in the FJ, its only a couple of $$ more.

We generally run 95 only don't know if it does give more k's or not but as Ray says its only a couple of bucks extra, don't run 98in it and definitely will not run ethanol in the bike or the car much rather walk then use that crap :sarcastic:...... umm maybe not :wacko2:

So with a quick change of Plans off we rode through the previously quiet town of Bellingen to pick up a Coffs Harbour FJ girl (Julie) that lived in a previously quiet culdesac. Then off to a Museum that had a lot ta Crowe about, then through a musical mountain Range where everyone was on song as we dropped into Beautiful Dorrigo with it`s own waterfall. The Best presented FJ went to last years Iron Butt Titleholder Flips :yahoo: Making him our first dual Titleholder. Then the Climax of the evening (other than David`s Chicken) ...The announcement we all had waited for...The Pinnacle of demonstrated commitment to FJ tribalism.. The Ashes award. I am so envious of all who attended the FJ Rally. I got to ride mine to my Mother's 80th Birthday party in Traralgon. 330K round trip.

'Twas great! As Darran said catching up with old faces, meeting the new ones, huge pub lunches, high spirited cross country sprints, terrific scenery etc etc. For me, 1100kms over 3 days is the most I've done, and all the FJ needs is a good bath/polish and we're ready to go again, :yahoo:

looking at the pick of Baldy in his strategically position :bad: got me thinking, :scratch_one-s_head:
so I just spent a coupla minutes with a torch in the same position, :biggrin:
I should/maybe/nearly be able to get the first 4 places in the line up with red & whites, I have a 2/84 chassis 00000115, a 12/84 (just snuck in there for 30 years)
a 12/85 & a 1/86 (all ozzie red & white's)
The 2/84 will need lots of work its a wreck, but the plan for it is a naked cafe job with the motor out of my 1992 1200.
the 12/84 is me show bike & the 12/85 will be its stock off sider to show as a pair,
(Vintage Japanese rules don't allow any metal polishing etc or modifications beyond showroom condition.)
But the 1/86 will be the one to beat flips, his really got me motivated, I will strip the 1989 & 1992 for the 17" wheels & brakes, not sure if I will go FZR rear or Suzuki
as I have Both rear ends :unknown: & get the motor hopping :biggrin:
But all will stay the real FJ colour red & white :good2:
because I have already got the painter booked to turn the 2002 FJR 1300 red & white in the same scheme as the 1100 & 1200's. :good2:

Arrived home at 730 pm tonight all safe and sound. Left Armidale at 830 this morning and traveled on some great roads except the short-cut I took from Willow Tree to Merriwa. The 20 km dirt section took me over 35 minutes to cover. Shame Arnie and Bozo weren't with me.
Had an absolute ball at the Rally, it was great to meet and socialise with all the members who attended. It was a pleasure to ride with you all and also see some great scenery and fantastic windy roads. Shame I missed the museum stop but had my own private race to the top of the mountain and met up with some total strangers that were riding past and were kind enough to stop to see if I was OK.

Sorry Mate, it was the only way I could stop tha bloody thing from whistling in my tank bag whenever I went over a speed hump. (apparently it`s the native voice box of all rubber chooks!) First I got a screw driver and tried extracting it in a delicate and obviously sensitive operation (where is Baldy when ya need him!). But with one elbow holding it`s head, left hand holding his legs and me tongue clenched I worked the driver in an orbital pattern.... I reckon I had almost got it when I noticed all the customers and staff at Maccas staring at me all strangelike (okay I was dribbling a bit), but I got tha distinct feeling I should depart without tha extra fries. ... lucky I found some good old reliable duck tape in same tank bag and used it ta hide the wound and shut tha noisey bastard up, before I fired up FJ1 and shot thru with Bellingen only a tankful away.

Had an absolute ball at the Rally, it was great to meet and socialise with all the members who attended. It was a pleasure to ride with you all and also see some great scenery and fantastic windy roads. Shame I missed the museum stop but had my own private race to the top of the mountain and met up with some total strangers that were riding past and were kind enough to stop to see if I was OK.

Got back about 1pm today, all went well, the bike ran a bit hot (plugs) but otherwise economy and power were right up there, can't wait till I get back to Perth to give it herbs. Thanks for your great company (and Joe the wallet hound)

John, glad to hear you and Arnie arrived back home safely and without any paperwork from the speeding authorities. Thanks for your's and Arnie's company on the ride up to and also at the Rally, had a great time talking with you both about old times and bikes we used to own. (especially the Z1R). Mr and Mrs Chromaxe reporting in.... Nicolle flew in on schedule yesterday and I got back in this arvo.. (Bozo, the stealth technology of the FJ did make me invisible to the boys in blue...)
From both of us, a big thankyou to everyone on the rally, especially The General, Baldy, Harvy and anyone who watched my six at any point over the weekend and provided feedback..... another 8 pounds of pressure really helped on the way south.. It was a brilliant weekend, we enjoyed meeting everyone and look forward to next year.
I also have three hundred photos of Flips bike and a couple of Nicolle and all the other bikes.. - I'll pop a few up tomorrow..

Had a good time. Now I just need for my arse to heal and my wrists to stop complaining. Traveled 3438kms up and back. More numbers and pics to follow tomorrow or the next day.
Gotta give Baldy a big THANK YOU for the Nabiac Motorcycle Museum. What a great place. Bozo and I rushed through in only 2 hrs. Could have spent 2 weeks in there. Vintage, Antique, Rare, Common, New, Historic, Restored, Original, UN-restored, they had it all. At least 1 of every bike I've owned in the 46 years I've been riding. (except my current other 2 bikes).
And, thanks to "the general" for all his great work getting it all together as well as jolly'ing along many who wouldn't have bothered without his encouragement.

If ya haven`t felt tha FJ Rally love, let me tell ya it was awesome. (Don`t know a better word for it really), Total number was 29 (30 if I count Julie).- Fantastic considering the flooding and weather forcast of continuing heavy rain right across the state. (okay okay, so somebody took the weather bureau`s website forcast and photshopped it onta this forum with happier sun clouds! Hee he hee)
Flips described the ride through Bellingen "spot on" :good2: and it was indeed cool. So many fun moments, that I think will come out in the wash as butts heal.
eg What are the odds of an FJ motorcyclist in full flight noticing a cash filled wallet on the side of a major thoroughfare! - What are the odds that the owner turned out to be riding another FJ?. What are the odds of being pulled over by a car in a backstreet of a town 40klms from Bellingen and being asked if I was going to the FJ event?... with the driver then inquiring where it was on? (he too rode an FJ and had heard a whisper from a local somewhere!..and had never found this forum) The individual destination rides, the Group Ride, The Technical debates, The exchange of info, New found and amazing/surprising friends of many layers. And and and.. The coffee. :nyam1:
All (major) award winners were seriously deserving of recognition. A stack of in house comraderie and digs that only attendees will get......Mate no matter how broke you are, ya gotta go to one of these things at least once in your life.
So hang in there Jeffo and keep positive. My Brother has been out of work for 4 Months! 6hrs ago I rang him and he now tells me that as of this morning, he has a major dilemma. He got 3 phone calls within an hour (this morning) - Yep, scored himself 3 jobs! -After a great enforced 4 month break he has this major prob of deciding which job ta take! - and a whole new attitude gained from his time off getting himself a little fitter and closer to family and friends......and and and..have we got some surprises being negotiated for The Snowy Mountains with their famous Alpine Way twisties! :yahoo: - (Pete might sell ya a great accomodation package too) :drinks:

Baldy, enjoyed the visit a lot, as Arnie wrote 2hrs felt like 5 minutes. Most of the bikes I used to own were there apart from "THE Z1R"/ FJ maybe they didn't leak oil or have a rebuild every week.

In the colder month's, possibly July, the FJR 1300 mob run a finger freeze ride,
we are looking to go some where mid QLD & NSW as that's where our majority of members are,
It will most likely be in the New England area, (the cold area's),
I will post it up when the dates are set,
I find the FJR mob are very much like the FJ mob (older :biggrin:), so we all should get along nicely (older) :good2:

Being in ya 40`s there might be a few that would question such a term, but it did get me thinkin a bit more about tha date for the Snowy Run. The Super bikes are on last weekend of Feb, while the Clipsal 500 (in case any of our riders wish to attend) is now going to be on the first weekend of March. (As is the Khancoben Bike festival in the Snowy Mountains). Considering your age, there is some debate in the commitee as to which weekend would be appropriate. But I`m suggesting 8th March so you can celebrate twice. (popcorn) (Not sure how that date will work seasonally for any International Guests? (popcorn)

Arrived in Melbourne Tuesday afternoon........bitumen melting hot!
After hoorays Sunday morning, I met my mate at Ebor at around 12:15 and we proceeded on to Wellington for the night, then Wagga the next night and into Melbourne via the Spur tuesday.
Have not been anywhere with internet access til now
FJ is fine - no problems to report.
Got a phone call from my sister (who lives in Perth) yesterday asking where i was - told her i was in Melbourne - she said "me too", so caught up with her yesterday.
OK 5 days of posts to catch up on!.......

The ruts and wash-outs going up the mountain just over the cattle grid were bad enough but the roadworks on the other side, with the large loose boulders were even worse. What a relief to get back on the blacktop. The majority of the road was great with plenty of corners to keep you on your toes. If ever they seal the dirt sections it with become a must-do for bike riders. If your interested let me know when your heading home, I may be able to help you pick some interesting roads that you may not have ridden on. Also, if you happen to be passing my neck of the woods, I may be able to ride some of the way with you.

That wasn't dirt, even the sheep and cattle were tip toeing around it, more like ball bearings but it was fun accelerating out of the bends and trying to avoid the dust from the bugger up front.
I attended the Vintage jap motorcycle rally at Victor harbour SA today, I've never seen so many jap bikes, when I get the chance I'll post some pictures. I'd guess around 200 plus were on show. If you didn't see your "old" bike in that lot it never existed. Ofcourse the rain was on and off to make owners happy.
For obvious reasons there were no Fj1100's there but the old XS1100 stood proudly amongst a stack of FZ750's. A friend of ours displayed an OW1 FZ-R750 racer (one of only 500 world wide were made for racing)
Just a BIG thank you to everyone for making this FJR rider very welcome last weekend. Had a great time & really enjoyed it (except the "off" beer that Megsy gave me on Fri night - it must have been off cause I was not well on Sat morning)
Thats the 2nd rally I have been to at Bellingen (FJR Forum have their State of Origin there each year) & is a great location.
Enjoyed the rides, the new friends & old (Yes, even you Baldy)
Hope to make it along to another some time.
AND.... Dont forget the Finger Freeze ride in June/July ..... All welcome

Looks good General, however I think there is a small difference between the blue spots and gold spots, sure I read something recently. I could be completely wrong though and the scotch is clouding my memory, if so I'm sure someone will beat me over the head for it. (More than likely a big, hair challenged FJR pilot :lol: :lol: )
they'll fit doug,, just piston size difference compared to blue spots me thinks,, doubt you would notice any difference in use
I have heard that the Gold dot pistons are lighter, not much but lighter in weight. They bolt on just as well as the Blue dots...

Okay, okay, I`ll fess up. It started when I ducked inta the chemist Saturday arvo, to buy meself some Gold finger nail polish. (Why do they call it "polish" when it`s paint - ya even gotta buy "finger nail polish remover" ta get it off, but I find turps just as good and a bloody lot cheaper!)
Anyhow - I noticed how nice me finger nail looked against my fairly new gold Rotor centres on FJ1. (Bloody flips has affected everyone!) - So tried a little bit on the stock calipers but it didn`t quite match, plus it looked kinda...Stock! (with makeup!). ...Tha next day (after a big big Sat`dee night out- and one big hangover), that ebay seller, who regularly has Blue spots up, (using the same pic each time I`ve noticed, despite them selling regularly at auction for Aus $90 to $105) puts up a set of Gold spots! (First time in about a year!)
... Well me headache hadn`t subsided, it was Sunday night and I`m watch`n a bit of TV in between FJ Forum quips...when suddenly a sexy make up advertisement pops up and this gorgeous sheila on it looks me straight in the eye and says "because you`re worth it!"...It was a real sign from FJ heaven...I rushed over ta the computer...couldn`t be bothered sitten out the auction, so I just hit tha "Buy it now button" with that sexy imaje of her eyes still emblazed in my sick mind...
Ta be honest I don`t use brakes much but I like`m to be pretty, like flips`...I find brakes just, slow me down...and ya don`t want that when ya followin

All good mate.......... It was a fantastic ride no matter where we all ended up or what we were riding. Although, I think that Megsy's mate, the mad irishman, Jeffrey, with his road racing experience, on the GSX 1400 was really just toying with Megsy, The General & me :flag_of_truce:

Megsy & I are working on the "Finger Freeze" ride at present. Chat on FJR forum about June long weekend but double demerits & lots of idiots that weekend :diablo:
So .... Looking at a July date & most likely Venue is Bingara in NW NSW although chat is maybe 1 night there & 1 night closer to BrisVegas (a fair few guys on FJR's come down from Gladstone).
It's being organised thru the FJR forum but we are very happy to have our Grandpa's (FJ's) join us as the much revered & respected "Elders". Last year we had 1 guy on a old Kwaka H1 Triple 500 !!!
Will post up dates/venue etc once decided but ride/weekend is open to all

I read a few of the posts, look everyone had a ball.
Prior to the ride my engine being all fixed up, and despite getting the engine back in the frame before the departure date, I still missed the ride up. However, as I was intending to visit a relative in Nimbin I still left on the 12th, and headed straight up. I passed the Belingen turn off on the arvo of the 13th and figured everyone must have left for the return journey by then and carried on up to nimbin.
Although the ride was amazing, long and sore, a few things stuck in my mind.
The highway from Sydney to grafton was a dead loss. Police, cameras, variable speed zones, a bloody nightmare! never again.
The Summerland highway from Grafton to casino was great.
On the return journey the new England Highway was fantastic, Armidale road from Grafton to Armidale was bliss!
And to top it all off was the Putty road, never have I come across a road deserving of such a reputation! Almost every corner was fantastic. The Ocean Road in Victoria could take lessons from the Putty Road!
Anyway, sorry to have missed the rally, I was a few days late, but heading up to Nimbin was great, great roads!
See you at the next rally perhaps....

Ohh mate, sorry we missed you. Nimbin is a place I`ve always wanted ta drop into, but everytime I`ve considered it as a shortcut, there were stacks of ominous clouds above it. - Any place you`d recommend as a stopover with wifey?

The weather there seems to fluctuate between sunny humid, drizzle humid, rainy humid, but only for 30 minutes or so. I recommend staying in Lismore or Casino, then venturing around the area. A warning on the road from Lismore to Nimbin, it is the WORST road I have seen in tarmac! pot holes you could loose a tire in, sunken parts of the roads, dropping almost a foot! I travel dirt roads on my bikes, this road scared me.
Sweet riding scenery, lush, tropical, and chock full of crazy hippie drivers!

have done that road several times the reason its like that is the govt reckons they don't need to repair as the locals float over it!!! :sarcastic:

hello everyone weekend was great myself and Jodi had a great time the food the people api what can I say thanks to the general for lending us the bike hope I did it proud. thanks to baldy for setting a cracking pace on the way home I loved it. Almost forgot Jodi was on the back credit to those girls for hanging on. ps Lb here
Great to see the FJ experience enjoyed. Good points Lb, esp about credits to the girls. They are indeed keepers. :good2:
Yeah, but you didn't mention that the pot holes are circled in white paint so you can see (and hopefully avoid) them. All done by a private citizen with a sense of civic responsibility :-).

Yeah, you are right.
I saw the actual guy in his overalls, and yes the potholes are painted in very eye catching colours, bordering on psychedelic though.
Some parts of the road resemble art works, that many potholes in the one spot.

Hi, I have some photos from the rally, I didn't post the same photos that everyone has of the night at the lodge/ bike line up. I have added some photos of the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle club rally in Victor Harbour SA which was incredible (second to the rally of course), enjoy.

Picked up the YZR for a friend and took it to Perth where he now lives (FIFO worker). Arnie sure picked some great roads, although I still would like to know whose idea it was to pick a gravel road.

I thought there was something weird about that (I tried to read the town name on one of the buildings), I used ride past Gympie to Cairns, hem (maybe next ride). FYI my scooter is going beautiffffully, I now have a set of XJR13 carb with appropriate jets etc, I should have a new Marving pipe in two weeks, I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Pete, great to hear from you. Actually speaking of roads Arnie and I had a goat track to Putty road (I think). It might've been made of tar, even the wombats wore work boots so their feet don't hurt over the pot holes :sarcastic:. The only boring section was the Hume, I honestly don't know why anyone would use that road to commute from / to Melbourne.
Hi all Fellow FJer's finally got my computer back after the rally and what a great ride it was :good: meeting all new people having a great time finding Bozo's wallet on the road (lucky) hitting good speed and fixed problem on the way. Spent the weekend at Bellingen then left and road to Lismore to visit my brother went to Nimben and other places stayed for 3 days then left for the trip home. !st stop was Port Macquarrie visited a old mate then left to head off and spend the night in Nabiac and went to the Motorcycle Museum before heading off Make a point in stopping there it's worth it. Thursday i left for Gosford to spend the night there and relax, by now the km's was starting to catch up with me. Friday left Gosford and started my trip home finally getting there and falling asleep for the weekend. 2700 Km's 8 days (337.5 K per day Average)

actually the count did only go down by 1 vote and I'm extremely disappointed as the instructions issued to everyone was to only vote if you were definitely going to go!!!!! I will be there next Year so everyone who voted for the Snowies had better turn up or else!!! :sarcastic:
