G'day, Alf and I have decided to have another Manshed Weekend. The dates are the 8th, 9th and 10th of December 2017. Between us, we have beds for 6, plenty of room for swags and tents. First in best dressed for the beds. Plenty of other accommodation is available in town, Bermagui Motor Inn is probably the pick of them.
Any suggestions as to any improvements on last years effort would be appreciated. (within reason)
Regards, Pete. :drinks:
G'day Pete and Alf
Sounds like a Great Idea, I hope I can make this one :drinks:
No Suggestions as I wasn't there for the last one, Good time of the year for one.
Cheers Alan
G'day Alan, hope you can make it also. We spent some time working out a suitable date for it. We have a ride planned for Tassie mid November so need a week or two after that trip to get organised. That weekend is a week before the Xmas school holidays start, so hopefully that might encourage some extra attendees before the Xmas madness starts. If your bike will be due for some regular maintenance (valve clearances etc) save it up for your visit to the south coast. We may even find time for a scenic ride and a beer or two. :drinks:
Regards, Pete.

Sounds great Pete, I'm in.
Alf and Mrs Alf were great hosts last year, generous with their hospitality and catering and hats off to Mrs Alf for enduring such a blokey weekend solo (or maybe she was just keeping an eye on her house)
As for improvements, none really spring to mind, it was a great weekend. Maybe a Kangaroo sign at the end of your street would have been good and make sure it's not too hot.
The Saturday ride was a cracker and kept everyone off the booze until late afternoon.
Last years Bermagui Manshed weekend was a highlight on the riding calender for me, great ride there, great company, plenty of laughs and a great part of the world, why would anyone
not go?

G'day Dickie, how have you been? Haven't heard from you in a while, too busy doing the kitchen reno I suppose.
Mate, I don't know what we'll do without you to open the stubbies and drink all the beer. Hope you can find a way to get here but I do know that you have a busy period ahead. Maybe some of your fellow Queenslanders may show some getup and go and turn up.
Noel has already stuck his hand up and is keen to attend, which is great. I know it's still a fair way off but early notice should give people time to get their shit together and commit. I'll give you a call tomorrow arvo from Alf's place , it's his turn for Thirstday Drinks.
Talk to you then. :drinks:

Thanks Ray, you just spoiled my night. I haven't done my shims for years, I
hate doing shims (and pods). Last time I just measured them all, removed the cams, bagged them up and sent them off to a machinist to grind them exactly to max clearance.
I figure if the compressions sound even when cranking, I'm good.

Ray, you might be able to fool everyone else but you're checking the long range forecast and roadworks status aren't you. Wondering if it's possible to get there and back without getting your bike dirty.
Noel
No problems with that Noel, you should know I carry a roadside cleaning kit with me at all times, :good2:
I'm in! Not sure what days but will work it out.
Hi pete i will try and make it i know it will be a event not to miss.
Hi Pete and Alf , I am in as well , at this stage . Once all the long distance Riders check in and if you happen to run out of space , I am happy to book in at Motel ,regards Phil
G'day Dave, good to hear from you. Hope you can make it down for the weekend. How did you get on with your license after the Rally trip?
We have a few coming, so it should be a great weekend.

I could not help myself ,I just had to ask him his name and age ,, His Name is Tom and he is "" 89 years old"" ,, and a nicer Bloke you would not find... and here I was thinking that I was getting to old for Riding ,, Shit I am only a Boy ..YA HOO

Great fun last year.

The Bermagui Manshed weekend is fast approaching (8th, 9th, 10th December). We need a list of attendees and whether accommodation will be required.
My apologies about the lateness of this post but I've just returned from a 10 day bike tour of Tasmania.

Pete, I had such a great time getting to, being at and going home from the your Manshed weekend last year I wouldn't miss it for anything.
So much so that I am reassembling this....

with these.....
...and a mixture of old and half length bearings (all I could get on short notice)
but it will have a shiny swing arm.

Just for the weekend!
Looking forward to it, just try and keep the heat and humidity down.
See ya there

I did that to my swingarm with black truck bed liner. Looked good for about a year. The chain lube managed to rot big chunks out of it. You're right though, looks ace now. Take it to meetings and photo shoots.

Quote from: X-Ray on November 26, 2017, 05:30:38 AM
What have you painted your swimgarm with Noel, looks ace
Ray, it's paint with 3 coats of automotive clear over it. It's the clear that makes it look good. That stuff is so tough you can hit it with a hammer (not
too hard) and it should last a lot longer. Swing arms cop a bit of beating for a number of reasons, paint alone doesn't seem up to it and powder coating a waste of money (IMO) for a part you see so little of.
The clear should make it easier to clean as well - time will tell.
Unless I'm buying specialised products like engine enamel etc, I prefer getting trade auto paint suppliers to make it up. The fillable rattle cans they use have high volume, broad pattern nozzles that allow for good wet coats and I know I'm not getting hobby paint. I have spaying equipment but with these cans/nozzles it's not worth getting the gear dirty for small jobs.

You are correct Mark. I'm self employed ("living the dream" according to those who aren't) and I'm in the workshop until at least midnight 6 nights a week. They are cordless headphones, I can either "watch" a movie or listen to music while I'm working.

G'Day Pete
Unfortunately, being new to the FJOwners Forum and thus receiving such short notice of the Manshed, I will not be able to attend.
This looks like a fantastic weekend with a group of like minded riders.
Is this an annual event and if so, is it generally advertise around July as it was this year?
Looking forward to meeting some fellow FJ owners in the not too distant future.
Gavin
Mens shed weekends can be held at anytime by anyone. Pete has sort of made his an annual pilgrimage, but anyone with a bit of space and a few tools (not talking about FJ riders here) can throw open their door for a shed day.
Mark
G'day Gavin, this is the second Manshed weekend that Alf and I have put on. Although some work does get done on the bikes, it's more about the social element of meeting up with fellow FJ owners and generally having a great time. We all have different backgrounds and walks of life but we all seem to get on famously. Just a great bunch of blokes and gals. I'm sure there will be another gathering soon (no pressure Troy), it's a shame you can't get to the Mudgee Rally so you can meet many other FJer's. I don't think there's been a Rally yet that has not had everybody talking about it for ages. I'm sure the Mudgee event will also be a memorable event for all the right reasons.
We'll have to get a Sydney and NSW south coast FJ ride organised, maybe after the Rally.
Regards, Pete.
The FJ prep is not going well (both bike and non bike problems) and is not looking like a starter for the weekend. I have been giving thought to how else I might get to Bermagui....
....however I don't think this is the answer.

I have a another bike that is waiting for a part (the
right part hopefully this time) that would make the trip. It's no FJ but it would get me there. I'll stir them up tomorrow.
The final straw on the FJ after a big effort to get it back together late tonight was noticing the LH muffler is cracked around the seam at the front from one too many contacts with the road. Those sort of cracks tend to travel quickly with load and vibration. I think it would be unwise to ride it that far with the potential for losing a muffler en route.
I'm not done yet.
Noel
Do your best Noel. The weather's clearing up just for our weekend. I know it's not the same but if you wanted to drive up, there is an FJ or two that you can ride when you get here. You could even ride a TDM900 with off-road tyres on it, that should be a good incentive to get your bike going.
Hope you can make it. Regards, Pete.
I thought I'd throw in a bit more added encouragement Noel.

Thanks Pete but I don't need any more encouragement, the memories, photos and ride from last year are some of the best. Thanks for the offer of a bike to ride up there but I am now sorted. The fuel pump came for the other bike so I hit the road tomorrow.
This is what finally dashed my hopes of bringing the FJ. (I don't have any of Jools high temp gaffer tape)

A great weekend at Bermagui, only marred by an unfortunate accident to one of our own during the ride out on Saturday. Best wishes to Troyski for a speedy recovery, we are thinking of you mate and if you need any help you only have to ask.
Many thanks to Pete and Alf (and Gail of course!) for organising this event and providing the beds and tucker for us old buggers.
Thanks especially to Pete for persevering with my centre stand mods and the ignition advance mod. She's sweet as a nut now, even if not as powerful as your beast (lets wait for the dyno shoot out on that one :blum2:)

G'day Randy, Troy had a fairly serious accident and had to be taken to hospital. Later that evening, after various scans etc, he was air lifted to a major hospital with better care to offer for his injuries. He has a fractured pelvis and some fractures to his lower vertebrae. He will be laid up for some time.
I will keep you up to date on his progress.

Troy's accident certainly hit all of us hard but thankfully it was not worse than it was. A big thanks to FJ Pete (paramedic) and Johno, who attended to Troy until the ambulance arrived. As Jools said, our thoughts and best wishes are with you Troy. Speedy recovery mate.

I spoke to Troy this afternoon and he seems to be in good spirits. His pain medication has been making him ill so it has been minimised.
He will be in hospital for at least 6 weeks. At present, he is in the Canberra hospital but is trying to get moved closer to his family who are about 2.5 to 3hours away at the moment. Hopefully he can get transferred to Nowra which is his home town.
He is already talking about rebuilding his FJ. I gave him a brief outline of what parts may be needed so he can fill in some of his hospital time by tracking down parts.
Hopefully his injuries heal quickly and he can get back to his normal routine.
Regards, Pete.
:shok: Gees not the sort of thing that you want to happen to anyone attending a Manshed/Ride weekend. As long as Troy is not too banged up and will make a speedy recovery thats all we can ask for. Not sure what happened to his FJ, but I'm sure we have the technology and know how to rebuild her,
So glad you had a great weekend guys. A mate broke his hip (in 4 places) while riding my pushbike 8 weeks ago. (Along with 4 ribs, shoulder blade & collapsed lung) and is now back to daily training. Hopefully Troy you will have a similar speedy recovery.
(Sorry I couldn`t be there).
I do like the idea of a northern Sydney Manshed day in the near future. :drinks:
I'll start with
Now I have that out of the way, what happened?
I'm not totally sure except that I lost my bottle in a corner that I should have been able to negotiate.
A simple case of the rider underperforming the bike.
I remember being in a gear lower than I should have and getting a compression lock. I also remember seeing around a fair amount of the corner and not seeing any traffic. The next is a WAG, but I think I froze or grabbed a brake and Yummy spat me off.
My punishment for being incompetent is a long recovery and expensive surgery to Yummy. My guilt is fucking up an awesome weekend arranged by Pete, Alf, and Gail. And WORSE GUILT is scaring the living shit out of my family, plus the now considerable inconvenience they'll be put to during the holiday season.
Super thanks to everyone for helping me out. Special thanks to Pete M & Johno. You guys may well have save my legs. Also thanks to Pete (ktm) for sorting out my bike.
Holy shit Troy! That bloody x-ray makes my skin crawl, but you're not the first that has hapenned to. Which means the skilled guys and gals who rebuild people daily should make you good as new.
Your poor FJ, looks a little worse for wear in the photos, but like you can be rebuilt to near perfect. Stay positive, these things can happen when you least expect it, just dont do it again!!
Hi Troy ,,,,,, Bugger ,,,,, Sorry to here about this Mate , Hope everything is as good as it possible can be at this time for you and that you are a fast healer . If you need any thing done at all just give me a P message , I am just down the road at Sussex Inlet . If you need to get your Bike back to Nowra I have a tilt Trailer and I could meet up with ktm Pete 1/2 way along the HWY and bring it back to Nowra and put it in your Shed . Just give me a message anytime . Best of luck with everything ,regards Phil
Hey Troy, so sorry to see this happen to you, and, as you so correctly mentioned, to your family. FJ's can be fixed, easily, but your injury will take some time and patience. It is important to forgive yourself. Shit happens.
Looking at your xray, is there a strategy to reduce the fracture? Watch out for OIC constipation caused by your pain killers.
I am a long way from you, but if I can help you with anything, please reach out. I'm sure all your FJ brothers here in the states feel the same.
Rest easy.
Pat
Hey Troyski.
I hope you mend up well. Look after yourself and listen to the Physio and Occupational Theapist (i am biased there as i work as a therapy assistant) and you will be on the road to recovery before you know it. I hope that Yummy is fixable as I know how much you put into her, But fix you first then her. Do not be suprised if you ever your loving bans you from 2 wheels for a bit, but give her time too.
I hope to catch up with you in March at the rally or if not then I am planning a trip down south just before the rally.
Heal Well
Mark
Hi Troy.
Heal well mate and don't worry about Yummy.
Just concentrate on getting yourself back on the road.
I'm sure you will have plenty of assistance in putting her back together.
Look forward to catching up in March.
Darran
Thanks fellas,
I am one lucky bugger.
Ray & Mark, Yummy is pretty fixable and my wife is already supporting a repair.
She also suggested I do another shed day at my place.
Phil, I reckon I'll probably take up your offer, thanks buddy.
Pat, spot on mate RE the constipation. As for stabilising the fracture, there are two other cracks so they've put a plate in plus a bunch of screws.
The other damage to my spine turned out to be old stuff that's has turned into mild arthritis (now I know why my back aches for no reason).
Now the hospital folks are informed of , and really like ATGATT. The in house councillors thought it was hoot.
Darren & Mark, perhaps Yummy & I will be ready to roll in time :good2:
Attaboy! :good:
Mateeeeeee. Heal fast and look after yourself.
Glad to hear you in good spirits Troy and put me down for the Nowra manshed day to help fix yummy :nyam1:
Not sure if any of the parts removed from My 92 3XW bike are of any use but your welcome to them - just shout out.
I reckon a custom alloy subframe might save a bit of weight........ :good2:
take care, get well and stop pestering the nurses

I went up to Canberra to visit Troy yesterday. He continues to be in good spirits and is resting in more comfort since he had a stainless steel plate and screws fitted to his pelvis last Friday. His pain management seems to be working better for him since the dosage and some of the drugs were reduced or changed.
He is still trying to be transferred closer to his home to enable his wife and kids easier visitation. Boredom seems to be his biggest problem, he's even resorted to watching test cricket. Hopefully he can get moved to Nowra so his time can be filled in with more visits from his family and friends.
Hope everyone has a great Christmas and a fun New Year.
Regards, Pete. :drinks:
Thanks for the update Pete. Heal fast Troy.

Holy shit! I didn't realise things were
that grim.

It could have been worse - resorting to watching AFL repeats.........

I'd pull the plug on my life support before it got to that.
Just received a message from Troy, he is being transferred to a hospital in his home town. Great news for him and his family.
His Christmas just got a whole lot better. :good2:

That is great news indeed!
I know how much family means to Troy and this must be great news for him at Christmas time, especially with young children.
Well done to whoever pulled this off. Sounds like someone may have been pulling a few strings.
Enjoy Chrismas with your family Troy, we are all thinking of you and looking forward to seeing you back on the road.

Thanks for the update Pete. I got an email from Troy last week as well. It sounds like he is in good hands and it is great news he can be closer to home.

That is great news Pete,
That will relieve a lot of stress for him at this time of year.

That is Absolutely Wonderful news Troy, :i_am_so_happy:
At least now your Missus has someone to mind the kids while she's out Shopping
All the Best for Christmas and the New Year everyone
Cheers Alan
Thanks Al,
Also everyone thanks very much for the support. It means a lot.
I'm feeling great considering.
The surgeons are sticking to their 6 week bed rest method.
I found out why earlier today.
Each fracture was completely displaced, much more than a crack ( he he, three bum cracks!).
As my pelvis kept falling apart they couldn't do the normal external fixing & had to unzip me and add some hardware.
The surgeon who visited this morning said they put in the absolute minimum of internal fixing & and any shenanigans by me moving too much (just going to the dunny for instance) could cause the bone to separate again. In another couple of days I'll be at the two week mark & really don't want to start the 6 week count down again.
Here's a pic of the post op CT scan showing the hardware. The two top screws are 150mm long SS canulated hex head with washer. I'm not sure what they used to fix the mechano down the bottom. The bottom one holds the front of my pelvis together, the top screws attach it to the spine at the rear from either side. At least it wasn't a "hold my beer" kind of crash (he he).
I'll have to put the 1100 refresh on hold whilst I get the 12 back up to spiv.
You rest easy and listen to the sawbones. Just had a knee done and I got a little rambunctios and ended up,flat on my back for an extra 2 weeks
Extra 2 weeks!
That would be seriously sad!
Rest Up Troyski.
I know where those missing bolts from Yummy ended up (lol Sorry tying to fit a hardwear joke in there somewhere)
Hopefully Yummy will not be as hard to fix as you are. See you soon. :drinks:
Mark
Wow Troy
That's an impressive bit of jewellery you got there.
I got something similar for Danielle for Christmas, but she doesn't ware it were you do :pardon:
With approx. 10 weeks till the rally you are a shoe in.
Just don't go over exerting yourself.
See you soon
Darran
P.S Im sure the commitee will turn a blind eye if you turn up on 4 wheels.
Troy,
Sorry to hear about the unfortunate get-off.............
Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery, and folks down there took really good care of you.....
Heal well Mate! :drinks:
WALKING!
:yahoo:
Definitely wobbly as a Hardley.
That was literally step one towards Mudgee (via home and family) :sarcastic:! :good:
I now realise just how weak you are after 6 weeks in bed!
Well done Troyski. Keep listening to the physios and you will get there.
THanks mate.
The nurses were taking bets on when I'd pass out. (They don't know how determined an FJ owner can be to make a rally). Won the pot by backing myself!
I'm already off the frame. They are giving me sticks tomorrow. Fingers crossed I can convince them I'm good to go home (this would put me a week and a half ahead of schedule)....I still walk like a Hardley rides...
although I did flick myself off Yummy in the first place so I really shouldn't get ahead of myself.....
Good to hear your mending Mate..
Great attitude Troy, and that helps heaps too, keep going, :good2:
That is Great news Troy
Your attitude through this ordeal has been inspiring Mate.
Always good to have a challenge to bring the best out in you but still early stages, take it easy but do it often
Cheers Alan
Thanks fellas!
Even more good news, I'm home!!!!
Not even using crutches, just sticks.
I now have a whole week with the kids before they go back to school.
:yahoo:
Very happy that you are on the mend and get some quality time with your ankle biters.
Good for you Troy....best news of the day! The hard work continues......
Please be extra careful in the bath/shower....you need grab bars installed?
DO NOT SLIP AND FALL
Cheers mate
Pat
That's fantastic news Troy!!
It must feel amazing to rejoin the outside world. I'll bet home never felt so good.
Looks like I'll have to come good on repaying my debt at Mudgee after all.
You are ahead of schedule with the body repairs, only the bike to go, keep it up. Look forward to catching up and I'll bring the wine this time.
Noel
Great news Troy :good2:
