Well shoot, and here I thought it was a toss up between Solvang and Lompac.
We can always have a 2nd rally. We need more than 1 per year anyway...

I think two official WCR's/year would be a great thing. One in Northern California/Oregon to accommodate those coming from the higher latitudes...and a second one in SoCal...in the "dead of winter" just because we can and there's a good FJ population down here. I was seriously considering trying to make it out to the WCR but after discovering it was only 2 days
Decided it wasn't worth it.
2 days, seriously? Lame, very lame. :bomb:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all the FJ Rally's 3 day events?
Many of us travel 2 days to get to the rally, spend 3 days at the rally, then travel 2 days to get home.
Regardless, many of us continue to ride the week following the Rally.
2 years ago after the Porterville WCR, a group of us went to Gunnison Colorado for a FJ Rally there.... Had a absolute blast.
Last year leaving from the WCR in Petaluma, we toured thru Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada before returning to SoCal.
All in all, a nice little 3,200 mile detour....the long way home so to speak...
Who knows where we will go this year...? Depending on the weather, I hear British Colombia is nice....
I would love our Rallies to be a week long event. I'm retired so I have the time, but unfortunately, many of us have jobs.
Sorry Scott, 3 days together is all we get, and yea, it is too short, although if you rationalize it enough, it could be a good excuse to stay home.
Last years ECFR was tues thru sun. This years ECSR is tues thru sun. Maybe we have more retired members on
The right coast?
Sorry for the cheeky comment.

Yeah, some of us out here have spoiled ourselves and usually stretch the EC FJ rallies by a few days :yahoo: , but 'officially' they're shorter.
One advantage we also have is that
most attendees live within (albeit a long one for some) a day's drive.

Hi Guys Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control I will not be attending Willets this Year, My mother is seriously ill and only has a few months left and I intend to spend time with her.
Mark Steve and Mike unfortunately we won't be able to make it 3 yrs in a row we got lost and had fun, hopefully this yr things will go well for you and you won't have this slow Aussie holding you up.
There is a little good news at this stage I'm hoping to make the US in September so if you organize a SoCal weekend I'm hooping to be there from around the 10th of September let me know.

Sorry to hear about your mom, but its good that you get to be with her during that time, not easy but better than being out of the country.
Maybe September will be an unofficial SoCal Rally. We have enough FJ's down here. La Mike, Mopar Man, San Dimas Mike, Frank in Long Beach, Craig O, Corey, Karl, Capt'n Ron, itsdrock, Skymasters, and simi_ed should be back on two wheels. Maybe ApriliaBill's son (Sean I think) will bring his FJ600.
I guess that means I have to wait for my Vegemite refill, almost out... :cray:

Mark - this is the way we went to the Petaluma Rally / and the way I went to my First Willits-- very nice ride. Capn Ron -- Mark can tell you that hwy33 is a nice alternative to just saying on the 101 -- you just go via Ojai -- to Hwy 33 - up and over then make a left when you hit the end -- and that road takes you back to the 101.
PS - Will miss you Baldy -- there was a sense of Royalty in our cabin last year. Take care.

Sometimes you just gotta cage it and trailer/truck the bike just to make a trip happen. For me, time, comfort, and interest have always been the deciding factors. If I don't have enough time to take an "Interesting" route to a destination, then I'd rather slab it down the interstate with the bike in the back of the truck, than die of boredom on the bike. For me to slab it on the bike, I'd at least need some scenery to make it worth while.
On a side note, I may actually make it down to this years rally. I'm just waiting to find out if a tentative Arizona trip (I've already committed to) is gonna conflict or not.
Yes, I understand the time issue....but boredom? Never. You are on the wrong road.
I plan on taking the high country route from SoCal to Willits. The ride up and over the Sierras is epic.

I totally agree with you sir. Unfortunately in the past, I've been hit with the dilemma of only having a certain amount of time for a trip, and having to decide whether to spend more time getting to the destination, or spending more time at the destination. I find that with my truck on the interstate, I can often travel more miles a day comfortably than I can on the bike. Even though I can travel at a faster speed on the bike, I'm still limited by being only able to ride roughly 300-400 miles a day before I'm through, especially when riding in the heat (high 80's+). Add to the fact that for me, most freeways are incredibly boring on a motorcycle, and thus slogging down one for 8+ hours quickly becomes utter torture. Slogging the freeway is a subjective issue to be sure, and I certainly don't think ill of those who do. It's just not for me.
To be clear, if I have the time, I always plan for the more interesting route. In my case, interesting being defined as curvy and/or very scenic. If I can make it down to Willits this year, I will definitely be riding the most interesting route down I can find.
Made some modifications and my trailer is set for 2 FJ's.

Very nice! I've done the 395 on the east side of the Sierra Nevadas quite a bit. The route back from last year's WCR took me up over the 108 (Sonora to Bridgeport) 25% grades and JUST spectacular!

I agree with both of you...If you've got the time, finding an interesting route...or great scenery is the way to go. I find that for myself, I want even more time than a twisty interesting route would seem to take. If I get up into interesting areas, I might meet other riders who want to show me some other road I never even considered. Maybe there's some sight that needs seeing. Maybe the best place to camp for the night comes up as a beautiful spot next to a lake...but that means you only loged 250 miles that day...but I'm right here and shouldn't pass it up!!
If you have to log the interstates to just get there...it's no longer about the trip...it's about the destination and you might as well trailer it. I can regularly knock out 800 miles a day in a car. 600 is the best I've done on the FJ on straight-line interstates and I was pretty worn out at the end of that. Not enjoyable at all. Add to that, I'm just eating up tires. I was thinking about the Black Hills Rally...I would want the stickiest rubber up in that part of SD, but even just slabbing it all the way would eat up 3000 miles of expensive tires. I may build myself a trailer. :good2:

If your route takes you up the 101, HWY G16 is one of my favorite roads that connect the 101 to PCH.

I'm getting tips on California roads from a guy from KANSAS??? Well, one of the best road tips EVER was from that Australian, Klavdy...(route 20 from Fort Bragg to Willits) so you might be on to something! I've only ever run that road from PCH to Carmel Valley...EXCELLENT Pinot Noir at Talbott's tasting room!!! I'll have to run the rest of that and give you a report. Thanks!! :hi:

BTDT. Kinda reminds me of Little Sycamore Cyn, out past 23, aka the "goat trail" but with more oak trees. Lots of slow flat corners as I remember.
I'll pass ... Gimme PCH all the way, baby :good2:

I've always liked those Interceptors! Thanks for the road tip (seriously)...that's how I've found some of the best rides! ...And you did seem to have a familiarity that I didn't expect from someone from Kansas. NOW where are you finding your twisty roads?
See you at the WCR!

I know there are some short sections of almost twisty roads in the Flint hills. :rofl2: Yea right, twisty's in Kansas. :wacko3:
For the real twisty roads near by, I have to head over to the Southwest part of Missouri and Northwest part of Arkansas. About a 300 mile trip just to get to the fun stuff.

Well...... I have been waiting patiently at work hoping that the stars would align and I would be able to make the WCR. No dice.
As some of you may know I work here: www.vinaroblesamphitheatre.com (http://www.vinaroblesamphitheatre.com)
I found out last week that we are opening the 2014 Season with War and Cheech & Chong on May 30th.....

Unfortunately, that means I am grounded for the weekend :negative: But I want to offer up access to the show for any FJ Owner that wants to make the trip. It is not exactly close to the campground in Willits and the date does not work particularly well with other planed events at the rally but I wanted to make the offer none the less. The venue is located in Paso Robles, CA about 5 hours south of the rally.
It dawned on me the Central Coast has been considered for the WCR a few times and that the rally dates coincide with the seasonal opening of the amphitheatre in late May or early June. So, with a little planning we could line up the rally with a show or two....
I want to go on record now with a vote to host the 2015 WCR in San Luis Obispo County. I have been riding here since 1988 and I can tell you that the area is full of excellent roads including Government Roads G16 (as mentioned) and G18 as well as Highway 1 through Big Sur.
I am disappointed about missing the WCR this year as I was really looking forward to the ride and catching up with old friends...
Cheers!
tim
Tim, you and your bike will be missed.
Yes, Tim you will be missed.....did you get some different paint on your FJ?
More Picts please! You did an amazing job on that beauty. Pat
Timbo, sort it out fella - that's two rally misses in a row. Get a clone or something.
I can vouch for the excellence of Tim's hospitality and the general coolness of the ampi-theather over which he is all powerful. Craig Z and I dropped in to join Tim and Lynard Skynard shake the building loose. Like, Tim's up on the stage and rubbing shoulders with the dudes - it's all so rock and roll.
Andy
Hello hello,
So I need some guidance from the almighty Kookaloo Gods. Turns out that the XJ Rally I was supposed to attend in early June may be cancelled due to lack of attendies. I want to attend your guys' rally! But I'm a.... whimp. You're trip is twice as far but defnitely doable (Phoenix Az here). I'm just afraid of doing it alone/getting lost/breakdown. Now I am doing everything in my power to get this FJ in tip top shape before then. Besides tires, chain, sprocket, oil, and the greasing/lubrication of miscellanious parts, is there anything I'm missing? I would also like to know if anyone is willing to make the trip up there with me? Maybe meet in LA or something and i'm completely OK with taking the route you wish. I'm totally fine with camping, because I feel like I'm too late for cabin reservations, but again, I just don't want to do it alone lol. I'm inexperienced with these things, as i've never been more than 100 miles on a bike before. The long ride won't bother me (I can and have ridden all day), just the fear of the unkown will.
Yes, your instincts are spot on....good call, don't go alone with a unfamiliar bike.
Hop on I-10 headed west...after a easy 4 hour ride, stop in Palm Desert. Stay overnight at my house and we will leave the following morning for Willits. I plan on going up 395 thru Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, Mono Lake, Topaz, and over the Sierras via Moniter Pass.
I have done Willits nonstop from Palm Desert several times and it makes for a long day so I think I'll make it a two day trip this year....I'm not in a hurry.
I'll PM you my address and cell #...
Meantime, put some miles on your bike.....long miles...a lot of miles....get all the bugs out. Know how far you can travel on your tank. *Bring a heated vest for the high country,* rain gear, and a 2 liter Camelback.
On your bike: 1) valves checked? 2) carbs synced? 3) fresh plugs? 4) fresh fuel filter? 5) carbs tight, no drips or leaks? 6) engine oil tight, no leaks? 7) fresh battery? 8) fresh rubber? 9) good chain? 10) fresh fluid in all the hydraulics?
No worries, rest assured that if anything does come up with your bike, I carry a full tool set and I have been known to work by the side of the road. It 'ain't fun, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Traveling is always better with a buddy who can run and get any parts you need.
Oh yea, don't forget your sleeping bag like Ed did on his first WCR.... We will have room for you in a cabin.
We will have fun...Cheers. Pat

Hot damn you guys are awesome. :dance2: The amount of friendliness on this site astounds me. Lol I have done all of the maintenance you listed in the past month. I just need my brakes adjusted/new ones, they're a bit whimpy. I did the things you guys suggested when I bought the bike too. Lithium battery, RPM oil cooler, and RPM foam pod filters, bike hasn't overheated since I bought it! It's just... old. Makes noises lol. Don't take this as my RSVP yet, I will let you know as soon as I can!
"Makes noises ". Well then... you good to go, now just go!
Just out of curiosity, is there an open bunk in anyone's cabin? Still not firm yet, but I thought I should maybe look for a place to crash recline.
Thanks in advance!

I got cabin 6 with Jeff (CatTomb). I don't know how much room is in those cabins but where there's a will...... I plan on checking in the 29th. If that helps you can plan on that :)..
I did the tent deal last year.... Upgrading this year....

So I'm late to the show and just registered on this forum, but I will arrive about early afternoon Friday (should be getting off early), just made reservations at the Old West Inn, so won't be camping but am wondering if you guys plan to informally hangout at the campground after daytime rides, and if so I'm thinking I could just show up and introduce myself with several 22 ounces of Wipeout IPA?

Oh this is gonna be fun! :drinks: Last time I was at Willits KOA I was also then late to the party (Skunk-train) run by Lagunita's Brewery, stayed at a motel then also just a couple of miles up the road into town, I knew it was gonna be epic so I parked the bike at the hotel and walked to and fro---or should I say ambled down the road and back again, about 2 o'clock in the morning with all the stars out---as well another interesting looking Neanderthal, that appeared suddenly and shirtless, out of the bushes on the side of the road, waist length hair and probably just guarding a grow, we looked across the road at eachother and he probably thougt the same as I---"wtf dude, really?" So i'll stop first with the bike though and to drop off the beer and chat then come back after parking it for further drinks and libation.
