well i took it to the dealer as i don't have  lot of time to do it myself, and i figured why not have it done correctly with no worries, so i took it in. The guy i handed my keys to was perfectly clear UNTIL HE GOT MY KEYS! Then he couldn't answer simple questions that i had so this will be the first and last time i take my bike to them. they wanted $95 for a valve cover gasket..........they must think i'm crazy!!!!

Maybe it's $5 for the gasket and $90 for installation. That gasket SUCKS to install.  :ireful:

Plus 1 most suck to remove :dash1:
A little grease holds it on no problem.

Having never performed this job i have no experience to draw from, but i thought it would be recommended or required after removing the valve cover to adjust the valves.? Thats what i recommend anytime i break the seal on any car or truck engine gasket.

They can be reused with no problem. They get hard and stiff then leak, then replace or just before.
Some use a LITTLE Yamabond on the cam plugs. I haven't in years if it leaks it gets replaced.

Drawing from my automotive background this is good advice. Why use a gasket if your going to slather sealer all over it? It defeats the purpose of using a gasket. I cleaned my used cam cover gasket, got evey speck of silicon that the previous owner put on it, then tacked it lightly in a few places and put the cover back on, no leaks. The key with any gasket is to have a perfectly clean gasket and sealing surface. I learned that the hard way.

thanks for all the advice. i will humbly return this thread to it's dormant state.

My gasket came all distorted and folded (Hungary, remember?). It wasn't even close to the shape of my cover. I used small spots of RTV to hold it, but it didn't work very well at all.

I have always had good luck with high tack. After you apply it mildly make sure it sets up and gets sticky. however not sure of applying it to a hotter running air cooled engine i think it should still work well.
