92fuel tank on an '86

i hope this is actually not a modification
i have a 92 tank that is cleaner than the one on my '86, i believe it is more worth touching up and painting
are the tanks physically the same?
can i just change out the fuelcocks?

The '92 tank will fit on your '86. The petcocks are different and will not interchange between tanks. The '86 petcock is vacuum actuated and gravity fed to your carbs. The '92 tank's petcock is free flowing and goes to a fuel pump that feeds the carbs.

There are two options for swapping the tanks.
1st option, Install a small ball valve inline between the petcock and your carbs. You will HAVE to shut the valve every time you turn the bike off.
2nd option, install a '89 or later fuel pump, fuel filter and retrofit your carbs.

There may be more options and configurations. These are the issues that I know of.

i suppose the Pingal petcock would work
has anyone used one of these? how hard is it to reach?

Just put a 12v shut off valve in the fuel line somewhere.
Ignition on, fuel flows, ignition off, it stops.
Manually turning the fuel on and off is a bit primitive.

 I use a Pingle adaptor plate with a 90 degree fitting and their inline vacuum shut off. http://www.pingelonline.com/pc_product_detail.asp?key=3CCC32F0434D41F0B6C89EC32D85EB11  Has worked great over the past 3 years

I have seen this solution proposed in the past, but have yet to see a solenoid shut-off that could be packaged within the the small confines on an FJ. If you have one in use in a FJ application, I (and others) for one, would like some information and pics of its install.

The only other viable fuel shut-off that I have seen that shows promise is this, but it is still pricey:

I used a pingle copy on my 86 (now has a small leak and is not rebuild able shoulda got the pingle). To access the lever to shut it off. I just bent over the black screen on the top slot of the side panel. Its right there.

I've now collected all the components to convert the 86 to fuel pump. Mostly so I can run a filter.

I bought a petcock replacement from RPM its a manual petcock but it bolted right in and I believe it was a Pingel.
