This is Mark's wife Pamela. I know how much you all helped with the orphanage project this year and how much your friendship mean to Mark.
I will be brief because I don't have a lot of time but I wanted to let you all know about Mark's car accident.
Yesterday Mark was driving his Trabont on the taxi way of the air base here in Papa. There was a large cable stretched across the road. Mark didn't see the cable and hit it straight on. Either from the cable/windshied etc. his face and jaw was broken in 6 places with half of his face being cut but still attached. They thought in the beginning he could be paralyzed because of the inpact but the ct scans proved his spine was ok. He was in surgery for 7 hours and is now in ICU recovering. As of this moment he has a trachoetomy in to help him breath. In the futer he will probably be moved to Vienna because of the translation problem. I will try my best to keep you all informed but I have 5 children and myself to help get through this. Mark is strong and healthy and most of all he has the Lord. If any of you pray, please pray for him. This process will be a long road ahead mostly for him but also us as a family.
Blessings to you all for helping with the orphanage this year. A friend of mine will be taking the gifts to the children. I've asked her to take lots of pictures so I can post them for you all to see.
Merry Christmas to you all, and give each of your loved ones a hug because life is short and you never know what each day will bring.
Pamela Gilbertson

Heartbreaking news Pam.
Mark has such a gift of bringing a different part of the world into our homes.
I always have to share the wonderful things he has to show us with my family.
He brings a unique view of the world most of us will never get to see, and with that, he makes this motorcycle site more than a place to just talk about bikes.
My heart goes out to you and your family, and I wish Mark a complete recovery.
Merry Christmas to you, Mark, and your wonderful kids, from a snowy Iowa.

The CanDman Clan
An orphanage full of abandoned kids is a heartbreaking place then good people like yourselves come along with 5 of your own to care for and still find enough time, love and generosity of spirit to bring some joy into their lives and then this. It's not right, it shouldn't happen to the good guys.
I, like many here enjoy Marks reports and observations of the quirkiness of life in Hungary and look forward to their resumption, even if from a different perspective for a while.
No two things seem further apart than being in hospital and the thought of cruising the open road on the FJ, but it's very potent medicine.
A speedy and full recovery, I need to know if the locals have actually started riding their push bikes yet.

Pamela, my prayers and thought are with you, Mark and your family.

Here I am, guys -
MARK. I am typing on a Hungarian keyboard, so this will take a while. I'm sitting at the nurse's station now because of wireless connection problems.
I'm not sure why my wife said I was in a fatal car accident. Very, VERY close, though. :unknown:
I made it through the first 2 pages of posts before getting choked up... and where my injuries are, that's really painful.
I have a photo I will show you taken as I climbed into the ambulance. As my wife says, "My head was a ball of blood, hair, bone parts, and teeth." There's a visual for you. The cable was unmarked and I caught it in my mouth, shattering my jawbone and actually cracked my skull. Blood was EVERYWHERE. My eyes were completely black and bleeding. I went into a coma for 5 days and regained consciousness 4 days ago. Pam continued to get calls from the hospital with their concern that I was not responding and I might not make it. Imagine having to deal with THAT.
I still have a feeding tube installed which is very painful. They told me they would remove it tomorrow. When I get full internet access I'll show you that picture I know you all want to see. I showed it to my roommate, and he yelled in Hungarian, "Jesus Christ is looking out for YOU, buddy!!!" He's right. God is very good to me and my family!
:good2: welcome back mate, great to know you can at least get around now :yahoo: , be the best Christmas present your family has ever had, having you up and about ,, heal fast mate, your kookaloo awaits
Mark, I am glad to hear you are doing well considering what you have been through, what still lies ahead for you and yet you have the ability to reply.
Continue to recover as you are in our constant thoughts.
Great news and Happy New Year.

Rumors of your demise have been greatly exaggerated. Welcome back to the world of the living, Mark. :)
It is damn fine to see you posting up. Thank you for taking the trouble to post up -from the nurse's station... It's odd, I have carried your story around with me mentioning it to a few friends. I found myself worrying for a man I have never met. I'm not really the worrying type so this is even more unusual. I am relieved to see you post up and wish you a speedy recovery.
Happy New Year,
Dan
I'll keep praying for you, glad you werent on the bike when you met that cable. God bless you!
Glad to hear you are up and about. The big GUY up there was watching out for you. I am happy to shear you are starting to mend. Get well and hopefully have a real good new year.
Great that you are up and about. Congratulations.
About that picture..... you've painted a mental image that is more than adequate. I know you've been lucky to have survived, I don't need to see just "how" lucky, thank you.

That's interesting. I had a bike wreck back in 2006, and vividly recall some of the dreams I had in the hospital the first night. In my case, the colors were red and yellow, with a distinctly Mexican or Aztec flair to the patterns. I imagined myself at some kind of wild party.
Extremely realistic and vivid. Very "Kubla Khan"-like as I recall. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubla_Khan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubla_Khan)
Does it hurt to laugh?
Any idea who was responsible for the cable being where it was? Military bases are usually pretty safety-conscious. Some kind of practical joke gone horribly bad?
What a way to start a new year!

Mark, nothing to apologize for, its good to know that your hallucinogenic image colors are consistent with your FJ. I wonder if that's why some like their pink stripe so much???

Actually the Hungarian recovery ward must be the only place that does not allow you to receive a blanket when you tell them you are cold and ask for one! :dash1:
The doctor checked me today and after I complained about the unending pain, he said, "May I remind you that when you arrived, your face was broken OFF?" ...Motioning with his hands... He has a point. It's going to be a long road to recovery, but seems I have a good start. Thanks again for all your kind words and prayers!
Praying that your recovery is swift and leaves no long lasting effects.
GIve the man a blanket!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the up date and pix.. Yea, cables... What were you doing, RCR or RVR check? :) I did a little time as AF Manager along my career path ran Base Ops/TA and retired as a fight chief with the 124th Aerial Port. Up in Alaska we used an old SAAB for runway/taxiway checks. Trivia... Glad to see you up and well with a smile. Thoughts are with you, if you need something that we can do from over here let us know... Maybe we can send the "OZ" gang up your way they seem to be a cheery lot ;)

Yeah, not too safe.

The doctor checked me today and after I complained about the unending pain...
Must be a European thing.
I was recovering in a German hospital after a wreck in `96, and complained to the nurse about the intensity of a constant, burning pain in my leg. She consulted Herr Doktor, who sent her back with some sort of analgesic SUPPOSITORY!
:shok: :shok: :shok: :shok: :shok:
It worked, of course, but I clearly received the message that I was being a pain in THEIR ass!
"Neither. Opening massive hangar doors using the winch cable from the front of a fire truck (stretched across the road).
Yeah, not too safe."
Those doors are typically pretty large and heavy. But heck it sounded like a good idea.... Next time use more cables and stand back further... :))
Well I am glad you are with us and healing. Made a few marginal judgements myself. One time it was referred to as "corporate experience". I ended up with a lot of it...
I see they pulled the "trake" and that is good. I know more about "trakes" than I ever needed to know. Not me, but a family member that's been on one for the last year.
While over in Italy they briefed us that if we had a "significant" medical problem to try our best to get back to the base, because the Italian medical system had a different approach when it came to pain management. I didn't want to find out.
All I can recommend is close your eyes listen to some Jimmy Buffet music think about palm tree's, clear blue water, white sandy beach's with a cool drink. Take a mental vacation........
Mark , great to see you post again . take it easy and try to relax . it is apparent that you had a lot of good karma points built up.
Happy new year :dance2:
Here's my mouth X-Ray. I count about 43 screws plus plates holding my face together. Fractures everywhere. Even in my skull.

That just looks painful. Hope it gets better quickly.
Keep that X-ray handy when you travel. You will need it to explain why you set off the metal detector. It is truly amazing how much damage our bodies can take and how well the medical field is in putting them back together. Did you finally get your blanket?

soon another FJ . . . .
Thank you, George. It's a LONG road for my healing. The doctor just told me today that he recommends I wait a couple months to get completely healed before any further corrective surgery. *sigh*
I am thankful that I am not any worse than I am. I saw some pictures of my old car a couple days ago. WHAT A MESS. The cable ripped my hood off, went through the windshield, cut through both left and right posts, then (as believed) caught me in the mouth. My seat back failed and sent me into the back seat, which might have saved my life. The cable dented the left and right rear door jamb just forward of the rear windows. There was blood all over the left rear window.
It could have easily taken my life. God is very good to me.
Mark,
God still wants you and your family to continue all of the work you have been doing in the Hungary with the orphans. Best wishes for a fast and complete recovery.
You'll be O.K?
That's good.
Bummer about the car, we all grew quite fond of it.
Just got out of the hospital again today. I just spent another week there. I had to go to the emergency room with a blood clot in my right leg. From what I read about them, they could be fatal, so I went immediately. On blood thinner now. This is common when a person has extended periods of inactivity.
What next? :pardon:

(you asked.)
Hang in there Mark. Glad you went to the emergency room on the blood clot. I had a friend that died of one and he wasn't really inactive. He just failed to identify the problem and tough it out. It has been known to happen in aircraft sitting cramped for many hours. Please watch the blood thinners also. If you get a persistent head ache or dizzy spells then shag your butt back to the emergency room. That also go's for any blood in places that it shouldn't be if you get my drift... They probably gave you all the info on that. I am not a doctor. Just had bunch of life experience.
I am glad the cheap ass seat gave way. Sounds like it did save your life. Is there anything we can reasonably do for you from over here ? Get well.

The danger with blood thinners is that frequently the docs get a bit overzealous with them, and as mentioned a persistent headache, double vision, etc can mean that you've gone the other way and can mean that you're on the doorstep of having a massive stroke. The treatment is a bit gruesome (they drill a hole into your head to relieve the pressure), but it beats the hell out of losing a big pile of brain function.
G`luck, carry on.
I found my old car today under a cover. It's still confiscated for the investigation.
Here's what a miracle looks like. How can someone live through this? I thank God for sparing my life!

In this photo you can see the dent where the cable stopped. There is still much of my blood in the back seat and splashed on the rear side window. It hit me HARD - right in the mouth.

3 thoughts come to mind when I looked at these pics..
1. I'm glad you made out of that alive.
2. I sincerely hope that whatever set of unfortunate circumstances led up to that incident cannot be replicated again.
3. How fast were you travelling? - Not asked in a "Slow down you bloody fool!" way but more I'd be interested to know from an engineering point of view. My understanding of Trabants is they are a shining example of Communism vs Engineering. (Not good, in case nobody got that..) :good2:
Glad you're up and about.

2. Yes, that was quite a shake up at the base here.
3. This happened about 50 yards from where I was parked, so speed was not an issue, especially with my Trabant's lack of acceleration! Trabants are called a "paper car" by the Hungarians, who don't like them either. A few of us Americans bought them more as a joke.
you have an angel on your right shoulder , watch out for the devil on the other one .
Well, 2 of the 5 jawbone pieces they put back together did not take. They are dead and will be removed with 2 teeth on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Your prayers are appreciated. As one friend told me, "No matter what happens, it won't be as bad as what you've already been through." True, I suppose.
It's a long road, guys. I'm getting weary of all this. I still have the RPM spin-on oil filter conversion and a new 41-tooth rear sprocket to install, but I cannot get motivated at all. The simplest projects seem difficult for me to focus and finish. Of course, it's difficult when it feels like someone is standing on your face all day. Not much pain, just a LOT of pressure.
Thanks, guys. Still thankful I'm vertical and not 6 feet under. :good2:
Stay on the green side of the grass for a while longer.
