I will just say this forum would be alot duller if we didn't have the posts from the "blokes" down under. I even look forward to Klavdy's posts!  Dave

I hear ya Ken. Posting downunder is followed by many from upover, but I think you mean why aren`t their more posts from our many Aussie mates...well, more often!

I attended a Christmas party for the XS1100 crew at Kenilworth last Saturday. It was a spur of the moment thing so didn`t mention it here. (apologies). http://xs1100.com.au/forum/index.php?topic=2528.msg16707#msg16707 (http://xs1100.com.au/forum/index.php?topic=2528.msg16707#msg16707)
They came from The Gold Coast and up as far as Bundaberg. Unbelievable awful weather meant half came by car, but it was bloody great....Just like the FJ crew ...But they too don`t post very often. (compared to the overall relative global tally here).
I had a PM only this week from an Aussie FJ mate that averages only one post per two months for tha last 3 years.

Your Post got me thinking. Is it an Aussie trait cause we`re on average very bashfull, Shy and concerned at putting a step out of place?....which of course would explain why we don`t hear from Klav very often, nor many of the 100 or so Lurkers out there, where women glow & men plunder!

Me thinks it`s related to Climate, employment and budget!.

Not many of us are retired. In fact I can only think of two. Our sheds are not snowbound...but reality is a vast majority have a constant work commitment, growing families and/or a mortgage to pay and more tax per head due to the cost of large tracks of bitumen between addresses.

Aussie partners enjoy being plundered by stable errr.... plunderers, hence their permission is forthcoming for Manshed days, Musters and Rallys, where beer can flow and partners chunder!....they enjoy the rewards from us being head down and arse up, hence a budget rocket makes sense. However when it comes to keyboard time, ya better run, ya better take cover! imho.   :drinks:

You've nailed it for me 'work, commitment, mortgage....' The list goes on.  In between we slip in the rides, the projects (some that could last a life time) and a bit of forum viewing/contributing in the between times.

What many may not realize is that 99% of everything "The General" says is "taking the piss".
You just need to learn to translate from his idea of humor and vague references to a wide variety of sources into both 'english' or 'aussie'.
Here's hoping that he'll appreciate my giving up his nefarious verbal/textual ways.

We`ve all got the same amount of time, 24hrs a day, it`s just a matter of priorities.  Your expressed curiosity is shirt face honesty (as usual).
Who doesn`t enjoy a quiet sip at the bar, while the education & shit flies between mates or strangers from the same tribe. (just keep one hand over the glass.   )

But ya have got me thinkin about "local" topics.....Like car Insurance cost when combined with bikes, Mosques (got one go`n up at the Sunshine Coast....not that there`s anything wrong with that!), Broadford next Easter, Next Manshed date, Wog57 memorial Calendar, Bank Slavery, Gold Coast Boat people, Unusual Christmas gifts like fart fresheners, Nefarious Beer Bubbles....why do they just keep coming? Why do some just stay on the side and don`t wanta surface? ...there`s gotta be more in this Keg!  :drinks:

Ok, what is Down Under Worthy - Is my attempt to reduce the mailing costs from OS by going through the 'new' Australia Post Shopmate service a worthwhile topic.  A positive experience by the way but not sure worth the efforts unless a 25% discount was on offer.

That makes sense that pie chart Andells. I have a few bikes and am a member of  each bikes forum.   This forums the most important of them cause its my
favorite bike to ride without doubt and has all the advice needed to keep it running sweet. The real bonus is the caliber of of the local forum members that you bump into every now and then..
With some of the other forums i have to go in as a guest, find what my user name is then try to remember my login word. Ive given up trying to login on a couple.

When your unlimited rpm gift card arrives let me know, i need a couple of things..

Guilty as charged, check in quite often but whenever someone poses a question there are far more knowledgeable people than me on here to answer it so tend to keep pretty quiet and I haven't seen anyone else from Sth Oz on here yet we seem to be pretty well spread out, not like we can pop out and meet up somewhere for lunch, but if I can ever help someone out in this part of Oz I'm more than willing to do so.
Now I have posted if there are free gifts from RPM on offer can I have a rear shock for Christmas.

I'm a member of a pommy forum for my Suzuki x7 which has/had members worldwide, and the activity on there now is virtually non existent. In the beginning it was ok but there were only maybe a dozen who were regular posters out of a couple hundred members. I don't get on there much anymore because usually when I check in and hit the new post button theres nothing to view or to respond to. Not sure why the downturn, maybe people sold their bikes and felt they no longer belonged, I don't know. Going through the list of members some didn't even do a single post, so you wonder why they even joined in the first place.

This forum on the other hand is very active with a lot of regular contributors and it doesn't matter what the topic is,( impacted bowel for example ) its sure to get a reply. With some of the Aussie members not posting much Ken, maybe it's because we're such a laidback bunch and even though we might have something to say we just couldn't be bothered doing it. It's easier to read than to reply so maybe that's half the problem. I have my say occasionally because if everybody stopped being active then this forum will go the same way as the Suzuki one.

I hear you Bones. It's funny how certain bike sites take on their own personality. I'm a member of a yamaha site in the UK and they are a small friendly bunch but just cant get any responses to technical questions . i haven't visited it in ages. Then there's a suzuki site i tried out for a few weeks. I'd say they have scared alot of folks away. I have no interest in being a member there. This is a good site.  Plenty of patient, friendly people who are eager to offer advice . A couple of the forums i'm a member of are so big that it attracts a few nuts. I rarely visit them either. They're just to competitive for my liking..

I would be in the mostly lurker category.  I find the site very valuable and is a key part of the FJ experience.....  My hat is off to all of those who:
1) Unfailingly welcome new members
2) Provide incredible, detailed, advice....
3) And correct advice that might be biased or opinionated.....

There are always a core group of folks that keep anything going.  In this case George, Mark, Pat, Noel, Ron, Fred, Randy (and of course Marsh) and at least as many others who do not pop into mind right way give the site it's personality and set the tone.

:hi:  My hat is of to all of you who keep it going, and thank you again for all your help.

Best of the season!

Forums are funny things

its surprising how they ebb and flow and evolve ??  I find that, belonging to several mainly 2 stroke forums that they are universal in patronage but end up with a colloquial hardcore.
The old timers just sit back and let them go - correcting any "mis information" that the know it all brigade spew forth. I've been around Yamaha smokers for nearly all by biking years
and there are 9 sitting in the garage/lock up even now.

I have found that this forum, even for me as a newbe, to very welcoming and honest compared to some.

There are some characters on here and a disproportionate number of Banana Benders

Hey TG, the orginal quote was $54 US for postage from the supplier, it ended up costing around $32 AUS but that was with a $25% discount when I went with the Shopmate mob.  I ordered on the 28th Nov and it arrived on the 10 December (2 days for delivery from the US site to the Shopmate site in the US so not much difference in time).  The saving was worth it in this instance but in future I'm not sure it would necessarily be the case, the other thing is that you don't know how much Shomate is going to charge exactly until they charge you (maybe you can work it out roughly).  If someone won't post to Aus I'd defintely use it, I'd hope to be able to trust out postal service to deliver (famous last words I know).

Ken

where do I start? well in answer to your request, one thing I don't have is lC350 barrels. I might be able to find one for you from my race mates, if I can find a standard one (porting wise)

In the garage at the moment is my Spondon LC special - its a 78 Spondon frame with (usually) a tuned LC250 motor running YZ125 pistons. I say usually as it currently wears a TZ750 top end and Lectron Carbs.
There is also an LC special that is being worked around till I get something I'm happy with. That has a TZ700 top end to keep it at 350cc, Astralite wheels, and whatever else I put on it.

In the lockup assembled are: 1973 RD350A that is restored just needs Historic rego, an RZ350YPVS resto which is about 90% assembled. There is a 74 DT250 in bits on the shelves together with a Kwak GPX250 - waiting for crankcase stud removal.
MY 78 TZ750 which needs an engine rebuild and frame repair (just bought a CMR frame & tank from Denis Curtis in Canadia) A project TZ250B 3YL 1991 that will be started in January, My TZR250 SP race bike with Sugo kit, a TZR250 F3 2MY race bike, a TZR250 3MA reverse cylinder proddy race bike (needs work). They are the ones that come to mind and are on the to do list !

since the tooth on a oversize RZpiston got caught on the port, should have filed it off, anyway one day ..  cheers ken

You have a `78 TZ750!!!
The Australian Unlimited Grand Prix at Bathurst, Easter 1979 was one of the greatest races of all time.
For the entire 20 laps, Graeme Crosby (KR750 Kawasaki), John Woodley (RG500 Suzuki) and Ron Boulden (TZ750 Yamaha) battled furiously. Crosby pulled a slight advantage of the mountain for the final time, but on Conrod Straight, Boulden unleashed the power of the Yamaha and held on to win by a fraction of a second.

I`m having dinner with all three blokes in Victoria in 4 months.....Care to join me?

Great Bikes, Great Times.    :drinks:

The 750 was one of those "shall I, shan't I" purchases.
I've tried racing it as a stock Period 5 bike but its unlike any other 250 or 350 to race.
The frames were built for the vertically challenged and at 6'3" I cramp after a few laps. Messed with my head a bit and had to go back to the smaller bikes to get myself back in the groove !

I've met Croz a few times - he came to the BSFoS at Eastern Creek a few years ago and we had a chat, then I bumped into him at Spa and Mallory Park the same year.
John Woodley's brother Bruce does all my tuning. Top bloke. I just wished I had picked a 750 up in the early 80's when they were giving them away...........this one came from Forrest, Virginia. The guy had 3 !!
I was smitten after I took a mates Harris TZ750 around Spa...............I had to have one !!

Ken
They will do that - gotta watch those RZ pistons in the LC's.........
there is a thread about my Spondon on Norbo's site.

Hey Doug, can I come too. I was at Bathurst in 79, 80 and 81. It was all a bit of a alcoholic haze but I will always remember seeing Croz pulling monos going downhill through the dipper. Awesome stuff

Wow, funny eh? I'm on here every day but I have just noticed that I have been away for about the last 4 days. Just been in the shed and looking up how to's etc on.....CARB REBUILDING!!
Man, I was shit scared of carbs but they are actually quite a logical piece of kit when you tear one (or 4 ) down. Unfortunately we don't get any of the nice carb dip products here in Australia that our US cuz's find on every corner store shelf, so cleaning these things is a bit more of an issue, unless you buy 4 cans of CRC Carb Spray.

Anyway, I'll start a new thread soon with pics of the slightly dirty ones I started with, and they are progressing nicely. Gummed up/leaking carbs with stiff slides are never going to work properley on a bike., let alone allow it to start. Anyway this is on my project '92 that I have purchased from Baldy, (a wad of cash coming your way soon mate)  :good2:.   Its actually good practice so I know exactly what to do when its time to freshen up my carbs  :good:

Once you demystify them, CV carbs are pretty simple. I love Firehawks description.

.........To me these carburetors are very simple and easy to understand.................To others, they are this magic device where voodoo happens inside, and somehow gets the fuel to my engine......................

Very satisfying when you "man up" and tackle them only to find there's nothing scary inside and with a few basic do's and dont's you can't even stuff them up.
Well done.

+1 ^ on that.

Must've gone through these carbs at least six times now. I stumbled along the way early on, made some mistakes (you learn quickly from those), but know them inside and out now.

John
My kids` inlaw`s are in The Barossa, but haven`t had the chance to get there lately. (despite being invited for Chrissy dinner in their Vineyard!). "Pominoz" lives near you, but he`s been lurking for a fair while now. (I`d send him a pm). I have booked to go to Broadford Bike Show for Easter if you want a great weekend ride.  :drinks:

Thanks General, Easter is always a family get together so can't make Broadford, I'm also a Pominoz so we should have a bit in common I'll look out for him.

Whoops! that shoulda read ....and ,and And.....Guess who`s given me accommodation and a bike to ride while I`m in Victoria next Easter for the Broadford Bike Bonanza.............Arnie! (Many thanks again mate).

Who`d of thought that A new topic topic would produce so many side topics! Thanks Ken!
(pssst! Jetstar has Easter Weekend Brissie flights for Broadford presently advertised at $218 RETURN!  ..... and I got a pub booked with spare beds for $40 nearby!)

What`s Broadford about? ....Everything bikes, old, new, racing tar & dirt, food, beer, displays, entertainment! (All on one site!)...Broadford was Australia`s best kept Motorcycle Industry secret!...with inherent accom demand (everything gets booked out!)..... Luckily I seem to have a way with publicans!     http://www.ma.org.au/index.php?id=1808. (http://www.ma.org.au/index.php?id=1808.)

....mmmmm...Not sure if this is off topic, but guess`n I should post a new topic not under new topic when I eventually get a chance.       :drinks:

What a nice bunch of chaps !! :good2:

I havn't been to see him for a while Arnie, we usually do stuff by phone and mail.

I was chatting to him a few weeks back about a project I had to fit a RD400 liner into a TZ700 cylinder to make a long stroke TZ motor - similar to the old Fahron cylinders of the 70's which are now like platinum hens teeth.

He gave me some pointers and measurements to check but stated it wasn't going to be easy.......

I've never been down to Broadford - maybe I should give it a try, my mate Nobby (Hyside Trading) usually has a stand ad could probably fix me up with a bike if I havn't got the 750 fixed.................
