Well,

I am working on a customers bike in preparation for the WCR. One of the tasks is to adjust the valves no problem I say...

The I found this when I removed the tank and pressure washed the engine to get all of the oil off.

The valve cover was literally glued on and had to be pried off with a screwdriver.

Here is the glue on the head of some of the bolts and chain guide that got slimed when it was being put together.

Here is the bottom of the valve cover and the hangers that are still stuck to the gasket.

Here are a few of the hangers from the inside of the engine that I was able to just lift off from the interior of the engine.

I think I am going to pull the pan too and make sure the pick-up screen is not full of the glue too.

Please do not use any type of sealant on the valve cover gasket. It is a rubber gasket that is the seal, not the glue. The seal is also controlled by the valve cover bolt grommets. If they are hard, then the valve cover gasket will leak.

The has been a public service message from RPM

Wow, that's dodgy, about all I use is a smear of rtv on the rounded portion on the gasket sides
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

Old school 70's and 80's car valve cover mentality. May be OK for an old V-8. Not so good on an FJ.

+1 A very little dab will do. If properly TQ'ed down they will last for a long time. Reused mine at least 3 times now and still no leaks...

Dang thats nasty..... i bet the pickup screen is covered...... dang good thing it didnt starve for oil and blow up!

KOokaloo! (without all the goop please)  :good2:

Rhino

yeah that sucks
i had an old vision that the po did the same sort of job with excess rtv
eventually the the excess broke loose and clocked the pickup and she ran dry suddenly at 80kph (50mph?)

interesting having the back wanting to overtake going down a hill at that speed

:shout: F###witt  cannot believe any one could be that stupid

I'll always put my hand up for being stupid, but i'd never do that.

rtv is like vegemite on toast, not jam

Someone's going to catch a lot of crap at the rally!  Should all be fun!

Yamifj1200

just goes to show "no on can fuck you like you can fuck yourself."  Would you try to fly a plane with out instruction?? no... why not take the time to learn how to work on your bike properly, before you make big mistakes and destroy your ride.. Some folks just don't get it....

I have no idea who the owner is. Before the member gets fully roasted over the proverbial camp fire. A little roasting during the WCR maybe.  :dance2:

Could it be possible that the offending person is the PO of said FJ that performed this heinous act????

Whoa fellas , put the pitchforks and torches down.

This "goo job" was the act of the previous owner of the fj in question.

Well that just throws a wet blanket on the whole thing.... I am sure other opportunities will come along between now and the rally.
