I was not implying the owner did this to his bike, but someone that worked on it did.

He only does minor work to the bike which is why it is here for me to repair.

I thought mine was bad when half the grommets on the cover bolts were missing and a PO had used silicone to seal around the bolts..

sorta back on topic, I agree that the glue/goop solution sucks, but who's knows what was going on at the time to contribute to the solution.

Okay uze guys...the bike in question be that of Zari's.  This jacked up service was completed prior to my even owning the jewel. It's been over 10 years since this was done, you can only imagine how overdue the service.  Nonetheless, that be that.  See you in Petaluma for the fun

Once upon a time, back when I lived in NYC, I bought an Astro van. About a week after I bought it it started emitting clouds of smoke big enough for New Jersey to take notice at every stoplight. I couldn't figure out where the smoke was coming from, it seemed to be coming from EVERYWHERE.

Long story short, this being a van and the engine being halfway inside under a "doghouse", the oil filler on the standard valve cover is inaccessible. To fix this there is an S-shaped filler tube that goes into the valve cover and comes out under the hood in the front. At the point where this tube goes into the cover there is a big rubber grommet. This grommet can be found at any parts store for $3.95, almost every GM van uses it.

What I had instead of this grommet, courtesy of the PO, was a glob of silicone the size of a small grapefruit. At least three tubes worth. That's $15 of silicone to do the job of a $3.95 part. This didn't seal worth a damn and allowed oil to splash onto the exhaust manifold, which is where the smoke was coming from. I pulled the valve cover and found silicone all over the rockers, floating in oil, and in a bunch of other places.
