Fred,

I posted a thread with some pictures when I installed the oil temp gauge a couple years ago.................I'll see if I can dig it up...
Basically it's an automotive oil temp gauge from VDO. I ended up buying it from Summit Racing, along with the sending unit (you have to get the right one for the gauge you have. They offer a couple different ones.) I went with the 300 degree gauge.
You have to get the oil galley adapter fitting from Randy, and there are a few different places you could screw it into the engine (I am not sure which location would be the best, as I think you may get different temp readings. Randy could advise here) I ended up using the galley plug on the front of the engine, just behind the header downtubes....
It looks like I installed it in October of 2010........It has worked fine the whole time. Even though it is an automotive gauge, that I'm sure isn't intended to get wet, I have gotten it wet while washing the bike, and in the occasional rain shower while riding, with no water ever getting inside that I can tell.............
It will be interesting to see what the effect on my temps will be once I upgrade to a better oil cooler....

I think I found it!
Here you go Fred................

Maybe randy will chime in here and advise a good tap point. I had a VDO voltmeter on my old BMW for years in the rain quiet often, rode it almost everday I could to work, sat out in the elements and it never leaked, some of the red in the dial faded over time but that was due to the sun everyday.

The can is a shock the F4i shock reservoir. The shock has to be mounted upside down that's why it is down there. So far I like the shock. If I decide to keep it in place I will get a new longer line made up and mount it up higher. I didn't want to spend the money until I seen how it preformed for me.

The driving lights are cheap WalMart units. 18.00, they put out 55 watts. Not LED's of course but they do help. I wired them up to a switch so I only have them on when needed. I made an L bracket and screwed it to the frame to mount them. Cost more for a waterproof switch than the lights....... :dash2:

This will be my first FJ rally so I am a nubby at that. I fact this will be the first longer trip that I have ever taken on the FJ. I mostly just ride around the local area. I took a little vacation from riding and sold all my stuff when I sold my last bike so this winter I have had to spool back up with everything, or at least enough to get by.

The new job sounds like it will be good from what I can pick up in the conversation. It's only money, benifits and retirement right ? Plus some vacation and holidays..... You got to make it while you can.

I would still trade you colors........

Plan on departing here the 28th.
George

I will be leaving the Denver area on the 28th.
Any chance we hook up on the way out to the WCR?

Leon

Hey, we sent a man to the moon, we can probably do an intercept along the way . PM me with your planed itinerary. I am retired so I am pretty flexable.
I was planning on departing here and RONing around the Reno area. Then arrive on Wednesday afternoon in Petaluma. But I flexable like I said. Am still  hoping that Kurt can make it also.

Maybe randy will chime in here and advise a good tap point.

You have two points that you can easily tap in for the oil temp gauge.

You have three points on the main galley, one on each side of the engine directly under the covers and on at the center of the engine where Firehawk068 illustrates the mounting.

You need this galley adapter for that installation:
RPM Galley Plug

Or you have the galley in the oil pan where you can use this oil galley adapter:
(I just found out I never loaded those adapters. I will get them loaded and let you know when they are online...)

Either one is a satisfactory location without any drilling of tapping required.

I put some red threadlock on the filter outlet tube/bolt...

Did you not read the installation directions...?

You should use only blue, but I do not recommend red Loc-tite as it can be difficult to remove when if/when the time comes. Since heat is usually required on red for removal, that is difficult to get to the hidden threads.

Also, if you use a thread lock product it only needs a drop or two.
