Throttle Locks; Who has experience with what, and which one will work on my 84FJ

Greetings again folks,

Here's a question that I haven't come across with the "search" function.   Which throttle lock will work on my 84FJ?   I have heard of ThrottleMeister before and know a few folks who have them on their bikes.  All reports are positive.  On ThrottleMeister's website they show an option for the 85FJ and a different one for the later models, but no 84.  Is there a difference in the throttle between an 84 and an 85, and if so, what?

Also tonight I came across the BrakeAway motorcycle cruise control.  I read a review for it on WebBikeWorld, and they mentioned that it worked rather well, but only show (in sportbikes) one for the FJR1300 (6CB02) and "6CB03 for Sport Touring, Standard & Scooter"  I'm going to hazard a guess and say that this model would fit bikes with a 22mm or 7/8" tube diameter which would include FJs, yeah?   Please correct me if I am wrong here.   Honestly I like how this BrakeAway appears to work, and given my druthers would like to install that vs something like a ThrottleMeister.   Has anyone with with an 84 used this model?   Cheers in advance for any advice.

I had a vistacruise on my 92 and really liked it. Inepensive and easy to install and use. Put 100K km+ on it

I put a throttlemeister on my FJR cause they looked neater. Expensive, difficult to use and keep adjusted.

+1 on the Vista Cruise...

Cheap, simple, durable, and it works.

Which Vistacruise model [unit] did you use? I had a spare dual cable unit laying about however I could not get it to work . thanks, Rich

It's been on there for many years, so I dunno what the number was.       :scratch_one-s_head:

It was marked 'for Yamaha dual cable models' though.  Works great.

I have had both, I like the Throttlemeister better.  They are more aesthetically pleasing, less obtrusive, and mine works great.  I use it all the time and it really makes long cruises much more enjoyable.  I must admit the Vista-Cruise is easier to set, but regardless of the throttle lock you choose you will have to reset it from time to time because it is not a true cruise control like on the BMW's, or cars.  With the throttle locked you will notice hills and wind change your speed constantly.  The Thottlemeister are a little pricey, at least $70 more than the Vista-Cruise, so price is definitely a factor.

Bottom line, You will be happy with either throttle lock because you can give your right hand a break  :flag_of_truce:
and it doesn't care what throttle lock provides the relief.

I have a vista cruise on my 86 FJ, works really well and would like one for my 93 if anyone knows where i could pick one up in Oz.

I've seen them for sale at "Peter Stevens" for outrageous amounts of cash.
You're much better off ordering from Zanotti or Mondak.  I think I paid $17 for the last one I got from US.

Cheers,

ISo the bars/clips on the 84/85 are standard 7/8" right?  I ask this because I think I'm going to give this BrakeAway a shot.  It looks solid, and doesn't look like it came out of a crackerjack box like the vista cruise does.  Most importantly it has a mechanism for brake deactivation.  Definitely a plus.  I tried the throttlemaster on my friend's RF900 and it was entirely too finicky for my liking.  And the throttle master is less than $50 less than the BrakeAway so that isn't an issue.   They only show the FZ-6 and FZ-1 as non metric cruiser for Yamaha.  But the same part works on the bandit V-strom and SV650.   I just spoke to a friend today who was thinking about it for his SV650 and when he spoke to the folks over there they said that they only sell it on bikes that they have personally tried it on, even if there is the same bike but older year they won't sell it.   I can understand that, and I have no problem eating it if it doesn't work (or I can just sell it on Ebay at a slight discount) but since this only connects to the throttle via sliding over the grip (much like the Vista cruise) and the brake attachment has adjustment built in (to cover the different brands that they are using the same models for I would assume) I don't see too many hurdles to a clean install.   I was going to order it on monday but one of our dogs (a shepherd/dane mix) is on a very quick decline (he's 12, which is ancient for his mix) so I think I'm gonna hold off for a week or two and see what Monday brings at the vet.   When I do try it I'll make sure that I take plenty of pics.

If you would like a cheap 3rd choice then there is a real easy way to kind of make your own throttlemeister. Cut the end of the grip for the throttle off so that you have the exposed plastic tube. Pull the bar end off and put a small O-ring on the treads and then a larger one where the bar-end will make contact with the throttle tub. Now you just tight the bar end to lock it. The reason for the smaller o-ring on the treads is so that it makes contact just a little before the large one. This way you have to give it that little extra to lock it. The bar-end tends to tighten so there is no worry about it falling off.  You fine tune it by sliding the the assembly to where it works best. I did 431  miles yesterday about 160 of it on the slab. I had the throttle locked all most all of the time. IT does not lock it too tight to not be able to move it. I was able to stay relaxed the whole time and just make the fine changes that where needed as they where needed.

This was posted to the yahoo list by members several times. I set it up on mine last summer and have been very happy with it. It more or list cost me nothing. The end of my grip had been cut off by the PO. I had bought a kit with over a thousand O-rings in it for 7 dollars.

O and to answer your question there is no diference between the 84 and the 85. If it will fit one it will fit the other

I had a throttlemeister on my Buell back in the day and loved it.  Very high quality fit and finish.  I bought the 'heavy' model, which helped dampen the vibrations from the v-twin also.  It was a welcome relief to have on an overnight ride from Detroit to Boston via Canada.  I'd love to get one for the FJ, but funds are going into the truck at the moment.   For the time being, I'm using the caterpillar o-ring method which works ok, but tends to slip fairly often.  I also have a cramp-buster which is nice when locking the throttle isn't an option.

Thanks Rich for the thoughts.  My wife and I took Harry to the vet.  He passed all of the palpation and range of motion tests with flying colors.  The vet thinks he may have gotten Lyme's from a tick.  The next few days will tell.  But for now he's walking around quite a bit better than he was over the weekend.

It may be a few more weeks for the cruise control than I anticipated.  Reason?  Well, I was looking at that corbin saddle on ebay (the one that started the hullabaloo  on ebay posts) and then folks about lost their mind and bid each other right past the "buy it now" price.  Well, I said bugger all and rang Corbin and picked up a new gunfighter/lady saddle for less than $300 shipped.   So, I guess on the long rides (at least for the next few weeks) my wrist will still hurt but my ass won't.  I can deal with that!

                                                              Cheers,

I lived in NZ for a few years, and visited friends in Sydney and Darwin quite a bit.   If you'd like I can pick one up here and send it to you, if they're completely unavailable there.  Just PM me with your address so I can see how much shipping will be.
