I cannot tell for the life of me what bolts go in these two holes. I have never noticed them being present nor have I noticed them falling out ... I find that odd to begin with but ????? So my Yamaha service manual has really bad pictures but from the image in Section 3-4 they might be "mount stays". My question then of course is what size are these bolts and how long are they? Are they something I need to order to from yamaha or can I go to Home Depot and find some?

Thank you all for what I'm sure will be great answers!

Um, you really want to consider replacing those before you ride it again...     :shok:

Thanks for the quick reply Randy ... from looking at the diagram I would have assumed bolts 7 and 10 but I was the one who didn't even notice them missing until now. If I order them from Yamaha it will be a week before they get here ... is there a work around to that?

I"m fairly sure that it's 15 and 16...  they're a button head cap screw, and most hardwares in the US don't carry anything that large in metric..

They go thru that plate, and attach the rear end of the frame cradle.

Umotors, Mondak, or Zanottis will likely be the quickest and cheapest, unless someone here has them on a parts bike.

Someone will correct me if I'm completely off base...

No, I think you are correct, I was the one wrong looking at that diagram ... and someone else posted the same question on the FJ yahoo club and the same part numbers came up .... http://fjyahoo.gfm.net:443/list.php?action=message&message=91057.

The part is a $1.50 bolt ... and yamaha also uses it for marine purposes ... I have my fingers crossed that I can find one somewhere here in Victoria as I was planning on leaving on a nice long trip tomorrow!

Not sure, but I think I remember those being 10mm bolts.  On one of the Deanabago's I replaced a broken one with a standard hex type bolt I had on hand. It shouldn't be too difficult to find the right bolt doameter and legnth.

That's good to know.  I wondered if there was enough for a socket to tighten a regular hex head in that bracket.

I'll get one and throw in my tankbag.

Or I could just lift one from Dean in Boone.  I'm sure there's a box of 'em in there with the spare battery.

Okay, so this board and a nice Yamaha parts guy have saved my bacon again! I just got off the phone with the Yamaha guy and the part numbers have now been replaced with the following (I wrote these down fast as he told them to me so I hope I got them right) 92017-08045-00 and 90110-08220-00. He said both bolts are 8mm and are now respectively $3 and $3.25 in Canada. But ordering them would take the standard 7 to 10 days ... but in Canada he said the Home Depot or Rona should have them.

So thank you Randy and The Fan ... you were both immense helps  :good2:

Dave,

They're 8mm bolts, but they go through 10mm holes.  They have a bad habit of BREAKING and then the head&part of the shank fall out.  This leaves the threaded portion still in the tapped lower cradle.  Once you get that threaded portion out, you may (I did) want to replace the bolt with a 10mm dia cap screw and re-tap the receiver hole to suit.

Cheers,
Arnie

arnie,

that's what happened to mine.  i spent probably 8 hours dremeling out the broken off shanks.  easy-outs wouldn't get it, had to use a dremel.  that was a bitch.

Looks like Dave might have gotten lucky, though.

It looks like his are just missing, as opposed to having a screw loose like you, Dean.       :diablo:

Hi! In2007 i bought a 1990 FJ. When i got it up on my lift i noticed one bolt was missing in the same location as your's When i looked closer i saw that the head of the bolt had snapped off. I removed the left engine cradle to gain better access to the bolt.It was broken off flush so i center punched a spot as close to center as i could. I then used a LEFT handed drill bit (can't remember the size?) and a little heat. I drilled in a little bit and the drill bit spun the offending broken bolt out of the hole. You can buy LH drill bits at a good hardware. I've got several sizes in my toolbox & they have proven handy several times!! I would think Lowes or Menards might have those bits also. Good luck.   Paul  aka mosickledude

So what I should do is have the 8mm hole, the first recieving hole as you called Arnie, bored out to 10mm so an actual 10mm bolt will fit within the 10mm hole. The crazy thing is why did Yamaha design it like this? I have two temporary bolts in there now and the bike did feel more steady yesterday which makes me wonder again how long I drove without those bolts or if it was just a recent thing and that is my mind assuring me that it is all good now?

Whichever it is, my mind or reality, thank you all again for the help. I did 1100kms yesterday from Victoria, BC to Edmonton, AB and not a thing went wrong except for a minor hiccup at about 5000 feet of elevation when I filled up with 85 octane as I figured I was burning through it rapidly yesterday but alas the old girl didn't like that idea.

Arnie

Dave,

That's what I did to mine - bored and tapped for 10mm bolts on both sides.  I don't understand why Yamaha did it this way.  There may be a reason, but I don't know what it is.
Your problem at 5000 ft probably wasn't the (lack of) octane but the lack of Oxygen.  You'd be running pretty rich in the thinner air.

Cheers,
Arnie
