Did you replace the sprockets as well as the chain?  If not, the old sprockets will tear that new (expen$ive) EK ZZZ chain up very rapidly.

Thank you for clearing that up for me.
I feel under powered.I started up my 1999 GP1200 yesterday it has about 160-170 hp and runs on 100 octane it sounds freekin awesome and the race gas mixed with with 2 smoke oil smells wonderfull.I cant wait to get it to the water. The FJ really needs a 1250 or more with a ported head on it IMO.When I can afford to do it I will upgrade the FJ.I have a 1997 GP1200 for sale for $2000 I would even sell the 1999 GP1200 for $4200 or $7000 for both on a double trailer.I did just buy a EK ZZZ chain now I need a rivet tool to put it on.Going to do a little at a time as money comes available.Chain and forks are first but I will be watching for the right deal on a bigger engine. If I sell the 97 that would get me a nice engine for the FJ.

Flying Scotsman

I am buying new sprockets.
1984 FJ1100
1985 FJ1100
1990 FJ1200
1999 GP1200 (165 + hp)

yea i kinda dis agree with you guys on this "any engine will mount up to any frame thing"

That aint true, the engine mounts have to be swapped out. The engine mounts are not the same at all, sorry let me refrase that, the engine mounts are different with a 91 frame to an 87. The 87 frame mounts wont bolt up to a 91 frame. Have to get differnt mounts. everything else will mount up to it(already done it)  but if i want to put the 87 engine into the 91 frame i will have to get new engine mounts to fit that frame cause the 87 engine mounts wont fit the 91

how is it disagreeing when you are saying the same thing?

the engine and the mounts are seperate parts ......any engine will fit any frame (with the appropriate mounts for that frame)

Can a 1200 engine be installed in a 1100 frame if  i use 1200  lower frame rails ?Are the side plates the same rear mounts etc. What all would I need to do to drop a 1200 into a 1100 main frame.

you dont need anything extra to put a 1200 engine into a 1100 frame.......like was said you just re-use all your existing engine mount hardware.    The mounting points on all the engines are exactly the same for all years and models.

KOokaloo!

well something like this. you cant use the same exsisting engine mount hardware. the mounting points may be the same but the engine mounts will not bolt up to the frame. the years are different. you would have to fabricate them to your frame or go buy new ones

Unless I miss interpreted this wrong

I THINK what Frank is saying is that you can use the 1100 mount hardware from an 1100 chassis to mount a 1200 engine in an 1100 chassis, without having to buy or fabricate anything.  You appear to be saying the opposite.

Curious, has anyone else actually done this transplant that can clear this up?

EXACTLY!     My current engine isnt even a FJ engine.... its a brand new (breathed on) XJR1250 engine......and its in my 86 Frame.

all the mounting points on the engine cases are the same..... the only caveat is that  you must have the correct engine mounts for the year frame you are trying to use.

i dont see why its so hard to understand.

Yeah, but I'll bet your holding it in with solenoids.  :-)

the the mounting points are the same on all FJ and XJR engines.... the frame is where the changes are.

any year engine will work in any year bike.

wnat to reopen this post

im going to swap my 87 to the 91

my main concern and i want to be sure before i do this(pretty sure i know the anwser) but wanna make sure.

the fj1200 eng9ine will mount up to any frame cause they al lhave the same mounting holes in the casing, but ill have to get the engine mounts for that year of frame correct?

to fit the 91 on engine on a previous 90 chassis the only mods necessary is to keep all the front big rubber mounts of the pre 90 model to fit into the front mounts of the 91 engine and drilling the lower rear mount of the 91 engine (it comes closed, even althought is there) to pass the long rear down chassis  bolt of the pre90 engine. Note that you cant refit the dampers of the pre 90 engine to that bolt, so you must pass it with a little of space, not rigid mounted, and it doesn´t fix the engine to the chassisnever again. It is refixed only for security porpouse
It sounds more difficult that really it is. The only difficult is to extract the old, big and hardened pre 90 dampers
