Thank you, Dan!  I love it when fresh work results in fresh excitement for the bike and the ride!

Agree!  Feels good to go back and revisit some of the things you'd like to tweak or revisit or just check on how the mods are doing.  Or maybe just polishing aluminum in Pat's case!  Even when the modifications are done - you still have to keep fire burning!

Quick update....    The clutch is perfect.

Yesterday (Sunday), I decided to ride the FJ North up Hwy 1 towards Big Sur.  There have been a few slides that caused the road to be closed for the last few years. You can no longer drive from Morro Bay through to Carmel. These are serious slides that require the State to rebuild using tunnels and bridges.

The result is that the typical tourist traffic is way, way down.  Yesterday, I rode for 1.5 hours North all the way to the closure and I had Hwy 1 virtually to myself.  When I did come up on traffic it was a single vehicle and I had no problems making a quick pass.  Yesterday was sunny, mild temps, clean road and very little traffic - miracle conditions - "Goldilocks" stuff to say the least.

I was thoroughly enjoying myself and feeling a lot of gratitude for the opportunity and the moment when it dawned on me....  My clutch is perfect right now.  I was grabbing downshifts for decreasing radius cut-back corners and the clutch and engine braking were functioning better than it ever has.  I used to put up with a soft lever and less than full disengagement - this meant hard shifts and jerky downshifts as well as difficulty finding neutral. My conclusion is that the clutch system was never completely bled of air.  It wasn't giving up any more bubbles but there was still air in the system.

I am giving most of the credit to the new Oberon Clutch Slave (for bleeding more easily and completely compared to the stock unit) but I have to mention the Barnett Coil Spring plate that was also newly added.  Bottom line; this clutch set up is fantastic!

Excellent Tim! She is a beauty. Did you use the FJR clutch master?
I sure like mine. That adjustable lever is cool beans.

On your old FJ clutch slave, did you do an autopsy? Were your walls pitted?

We are long long over due for a ride! Perhaps Willits?

Cheers lad

Paddy.

Yes, Pat the clutch master is an FJR unit and I did rebuild it with a new seal kit when these parts went on.  So, the whole system was refreshed. Only thing left to do would be steel braided line I guess - but I don't feel like I need it. I have not looked at the old OEM clutch slave - too busy to be curious I guess. I'll have a look and report back on that though...

I am aiming to make it to Willits for sure!!!

Cheers!!!

Congrats on the build!

What year of FJR master cylinder is best to use? Or they are the same?

Thanks
It does not matter how slowly I go as long as I do not stop.

I was needing to bleed my clutch to restore proper engagement and feel once every couple of thousand miles Pat, and did see a bit of paint peeling on the oil filter housing.

Just got the heck of it, I put on an Oberon clutch slave cylinder and immediately noticed a slightly lighter clutch pull and better engagement/disengagement, especially on downshifts and clutched upshifts - apart from the 1st to 2nd gear change, I usually don't use the clutch for upshifts and usually only use the clutch on higher rpm downshifts or when making them for quick overtake downshifts.

Rev matching, throttle, gear lever, hand and foot coordination are obviously critical for smooth shifting without the clutch, but as my gearbox has had over 100,000 of use like this and it still works perfectly, I guess it's not doing any harm. It took lots of practice when I was younger, on a range of bikes, to perfect the technique.

My reference point was an article in Motorcyclist Magazine, way back when, I think by Gordon Jennings called something like "10 ways to 5 speeds", which was all about getting smooth gear changes. Pillions have often commented on the lack of "jerkiness" during gear changes, when riding with me.

PS - I also have an early FJR master cylinder and stainless braided clutch line.
