Hi everyone. I need help with measuring the float height on my 84. The manual says to tilt the carb till it touches the spring but doesnt compress it. But I can turn them upside down and they dont compress till I push the float with my finger. Is this normal? I really need help. Thanks

That is correct. Hold the carbs at a slight angle and you can look down the rack and see if the float levels are the same. From there you can adjust the height as required.

The needle spring at times can be compressed by the weight of the float thus the direction to make sure the springs are not compressed.

Sounds like the float needle springs are stiff/dirty perhaps?

Haven't seen that condition quite as you describe it.  Wonder if a little lubrication would help there.  Is it the sprung part that's tight or the entire needle getting stuck?  If it's the latter, you can expect to have a big gas leak; the former should be okay.

Maybe this will help in his prognosis.  I posted this for him over on my FZ1 forums to see if we could get any input over there as well:

QuoteMy buddy has an 84 fj1100 who we are going through hell to figure out why his low end is absolute CRAP when WOT. He has full exhaust and pods. He ordered a Dynojet drop in kit that came with several main jet sizes and needles. We installed the jet kit to the specs recommended and did everything perfectly. Top end was a little off and the low end was garbage. We pulled his pod filters off and tried running it. She hauled ass in top end. Okay, so that means we're a little too rich. Well, we went from a 124 all the way to a 118 and it seemed to get better but the low end is still complete crap. This last time we pulled the carbs off I checked his float levels, well tried to at least. His floats will not depress from their own weight when turned all the way completely upside down. They SHOULD from my understanding do the same thing mine did, depress once at an angle too far. They will rest on the float needle, but will not depress. However, if you push down on the floats, it WILL depress. Does he need a new float valve assembly? Just a new float needle? I'm thinking that it takes a TON of gas in the float bowls to FORCE the valve to depress and not allow any more gas in resulting in a very rich condition down low that slowly gets better with higher RPMS. Almost like a stuck float but without any gas coming out the overflow tubes.

So long story short, am I correct to assume that we need to replace some if not all of the float valve assembly to remedy this problem?

We're gonna take a look at the emulsion tubes as well, that's one other thing we haven't looked into.

Anything I may be missing?

Right now we are doing a whole lot of  :dash2:

Oh, per that description:

The float needles sound stiff but likely should work.  If they were soldered in the out/extended position, it'd still work.

However, if you're fat as hell on the bottom end, you're in the right area.  Pull the floats, the float needle, and the float seat.  Replace the o-rings around the seats.  Super common for those to get crappy and let fuel past.  Isn't usually much fun getting the seats out, but at worst they're replaceable.

Do you or anyone have specs on the o-rings needed?  Can you buy these o-rings somewhere by themselves?  I can only find the float needle by itself for 8 bucks each or the whole float valve assembly for 24 bucks each.  Hoping to be lucky and just buy the needle and some orings and save some cash.  Maybe a bad idea and just replace the whole assembly anyway?

A video of me dropping a motorcycle doesn't exist because it's never happened.  Nice try.  Now I have ALMOST dropped my bike but I got my big ass under it before it touch the ground.  Keep trying little buddy!   :blum1:
