FZR1000 Front Wheel. Cant Get Brake Discs!

I have a FZR1000 front wheel to put on my FJ but realised today I will need to fit FZR discs to it. Unfortunately all FZR discs available to buy are 320mm. No good!

The FZR front wheel is a common modification so can anyone share where I may find 295-300mm discs to fit?

Any other bikes compatable with it? They're 6 bolt and 80mm PCD fitment.

Stock 89-93 Non-ABS discs are correct. I have the FZR1000 3.5" front wheel, been running a pair of used 89 discs for years. Factory Yamaha pads are kind to the rotors with excellent performance.

Many FJ owners have installed these rotors with very positive results.

I second that, when bedding in the Arashi rotors I heard a slight growl under harder braking. Once the pads bedded in, they are smooth and quiet.

thank you. I got some discs but next problem.... The FJ has a speedo thing one side so no problem there but on the right the round plate (ABS bracket??) will no longer fit and fill the space. How did you guys over come this?

I can cut out the centre section I guess. On the FJ the whole thing sits inside the centre bore of the disc.

I am sure the ABS crowd has solved this problem. No ABS on my 86 or 89.

What's wrong with 320mm rotors?

It does not matter how slowly I go as long as I do not stop.

The rotor size is dictated by the location of the caliper mounting lugs on the forks. ****
320mm rotors are too big for the caliper mount locations on the FJ forks.

*** Exception: There are custom plates made for altering the brake caliper locations.

Re: ABS. When you remove the ABS plate you replace it with the non-ABS stock FJ wheel spacer.

I am sorry, taking it back....

I missed that this is just the wheel transplant :) not entire front end :morning2:

Problems continue....

I have the FZR and FJ wheels side by side. The FJ wheel fits perfectly obviously but the FZR wheel now even with the non ABS collar and spacer still isnt fitting.

Is the FZR1000 speedo drive thinner? The wheel seems to be pushed too far from the left. The wheel doesnt sit central so even if I cut down the spacer on the right and get the wheel to slot in, it still wont be correct.

The centre width distance of both wheels is 120mm I can only see the speedo drive being too wide to be the problem.

Billy Bananahead

I think the speedo drive is different for both models. The FJ and the FZR EXUP RU both have different part numbers.
Here's a link to the models and for the US specs just scroll down the page. HTH.

The only FZR wheels that are directly compatible with the FJ (and the FJ oem 15mm axle) are the 1987 (white rim) and 1988 (white or red rim)

In 1989 FZR moved to a 17mm diameter front axle. So....

What year FZR rim do you have?

It must also be noted that if you have an 1100 you need 1200 fork lowers to enable the brake calipers to fit for larger disc.

I've always been under the assumption that the FZR wheel was a direct swap but it ain't.
