Bar weight installation

I had twisted/screwed in the throttle side weight this morning, but it must've been too tight since I couldn't rotate the throttle. I backed it off a bit and everything was fine. Started my 13mile commute to work, and at some point looked down and noticed it was gone. gawdamnit.

So is there a trick? Should it just need to be screwed in? Lock-tite the hell out of it? I'm going to go back and scan the roads after work to hope by chance that it is just sitting on the side of the road.

You may have to trim your grips down a bit, I've never had a problem with my ends droping off or you can try the Lock-Tite thingy trick!!!!!

  You can move the rubber grip around a bit on the throttle tube with an air compressor and an air nozzle.
The bar ends screw in until tight and you dont need Lock-tite to secure the bar end weight. I have never had any problems with the throttle dragging on the bar end weight. Are you using the stock rubber grips or aftermarket ones? Note to self, never leave any fastener on your bike loose for any reason including bar ends...

Cruised my route a few times, couldn't find the errant weight. Rather ticked at myself.

After trimming the grips, which I assume are stock, the weight is hitting the throttle tube. I assume the grips are stock as I myself have never replaced them, but I have no clue of the bikes previous 2x year history. There are no other fj's in my area that I can compare my grips to.

What are my options if they are hitting the tube itself? I'm leary about grinding tube. Maybe loosen the right side switch block and see if I can scoot it over, and the grip with it? If it makes any difference in determining why it is hitting, the throttle tube is white and feel plasticy. Saying this because I usually see black ones on ebay.

I'm sure you don't need to grind the throttle tube for the bar end to be installed properly. Simply slide your switch assembly and throttle housing in on the bar as far as you can. I bet you can install the bar end then with no problems, ah but you still have a problem right??? No Bar end.... I happen to know there is an FJ owner in the Richmond area with a old spare bar end.

Luckily, I was sent a set of ends, so I have a spare. 

I'll keep my eye out for the white pickup that was behind me this morning...maybe I'll see the weight in his grill? lol

If your bar weight is hitting the grip, and you don't want to move all the stuff on the bar, you can put a 'stand-off' washer between the handlebar and the bar end.  This will keep the bar end weight a bit further out.

*If* you end up having to trim the throttle tube itself, DO NOT REMOVE ANY MORE MATERIAL THAN IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR CLEARANCE.

Due to a completely dumbass attempted mod...which will not be detailed here...I melted the last half-inch or so of the throttle tube on the '86 a couple of years ago. I cut off the offending section 'cause I'm cheap, and installed a new set of gel grips...which then squeezed down on that last half-inch of protruding handlebar tube, causing the throttle to bind.

Actually, "bind" is an understatement...I got a custom-built throttle lock. And not in a good way. It's still that way, but I've been using some cheapo semi-rigid grips from J.C. Whitney - $8 a pair, firm vinyl with foam overlay. They don't self-conform like gel grips. Actually, I kinda like 'em. Old-style Sunline grips would work, too.

Ya gotta cut the end of the grip off to use the bar-ends, but that's OK. They've got a stoopid-lookin' Harley-Wannabee eagle insert on 'em that just had to go anyway.

Just to let you know all Yamaha sport bikes (no idea about crusers) use the same bar weight attach system (big threds screwing into bars or clipons) they might look different but attach the same way.

I got a set of FJ ends from big George and had them modded to use with my Vstrom hand gards on my Fazer1. So if I want to return to stock unscrew the weights and put the stockers back on.

the FZ1 handlebar weights are exactly the same as the FJ also.

They look identical to the left side weight. I haven't taken the weight off yet to verify, but the outer size and design is the same.
