New to the group

Hi my name is david.I have a 91' FJ 1200 I've had it for 1 1/2 years and I've never even gotten to ride it Lol. I bought it from a family friend who laid it down and then his wife made him park it for good.It has minor damage to the lower fairing (A.k.A the under belly) but other then that just a few minor scratches. It only has 10k miles on it and ran perfect when he parked it but he left all fluids sitting in the bike without ever starting for over 3 years. I was told to have carbs rebuilt and get the gas tanked flushed and change fluids and should be fine. Well although it took all that plus getting the cylinder head cleaned and polished, the cylinder jug cleaned, polished,and honed, a complete valve Job,new piston rings, all new seals and gaskets,a new cylinder studkit, a new battery,and new tires. Im very excited to say within the next couple weeks it will be done

Welcome ! Wow you have already got a lot of experience with the FJ ! Nothing like working on your own machine to learn how it works. Presently doing some of the same things you have done. It has a lot of power if you are not use to it so take it easy at first.    Just for info we have some other members in Florida, what city are you in ? Don't mean to pry. Just sometimes there are members close by that help or ride with.

There are a few of us, I'm in Vero Beach. Steve is in Orlando. The FJ is a great bike and with all the engine work you are doing she will be a reliable bike for a very long time. I give you kudos for figuring out how to post pics right out of the gate.

We have a Easy Cosst rally in Boone NC in May. Great bunch of guys and highly recommend attending if you can.

Welcome new guy, what can we call you other than new guy? New guy only lasts so long... How much of the work are you doing yourself? The FJ is easy to work on. I have learned how to perform nearly everything I can do to the FJ other than engine and transmission from this group. I hope to be back on the road soon with my FJ, just some minor fixes like a tweaked frame and cracked case. Now worries, I have the best support group right here.

Ty all so much for the warm welcome.I live in Ft.Myers about 4 hours south of orlando. To answer the other question I'm doing 85% of the work myself had it at a mechanic for the first 1 year and he couldn't even get the cylinder head off lol he was afraid to break it so I picked it up knocked the head and jug off and took them to the machinist 3 days ago just waiting on them and a few parts to arrive and it will be up and running

If it ran perfect when he parked it, why then did it need a full rebuild with only 10,000 miles on it. Leaving it sit for three years with fluids in it wouldn't damage the engine that'd require new rings and valve grind etc....

You sure your not getting ripped off by your mechanic, machinist??

What happened was I had all 4 carbs rebuilt the gas tanked flushed and the fluids changed the mechanic started the bike and smoke filled the shop in seconds. Usually meaning valves or rings so I took it home and started the process of changing rings but figured I have it all ripped apart might as well do valves,valve seals, and all other gaskets and seals. So then I ffigured its getting a valve job and new rings might as well have everything cleaned,polished, and honed. So part of it is just me doting my eyes and crossing my t's.

Hmmm....

When a bike sits for a while, sticky varnishes develop, and rubber things get hard. Rings don't want to seal immediately upon waking. (still sleepy, you see...)

Advice:

Ride `dat bee-Yatch!

Things will loosen up, and the rings will (possibly) seal again.

...but if the engine's already apart...
