When is end of June, I have a camper and it will be my wife and three boys 14, 16, and 18.
Coming from Minnesota, so probably I90 to Rapid City SD then Westward.
We're planning on driving straight through so most of our time is there.  First thought was Yellowstone, but that seems so, eh, 'touristy'.  Going to hit Grand Teton National Park for sure, Cody is on the list too.  Wouldn't rule out I80 on the way home.  Or I80 there and I90 back, I'm open.

Okay, if you're running the I-90 west through South Dakota, take a quick stop in Wall to check out Wall Drug if it's convenient timing.  I got a hotel there one night and shot some pool at a local pub and met some great local folks.  Then, just west of Wall, is the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site...a MUST see!  This is a Minuteman Missile command center that you can go explore...take an elevator below ground to the launch control room...straight out of "War Games" with the spring mounted vault-door room with the two command chairs and the synchronized keys...just an amazing piece of cold war history!  You can also drive one exit and see one of the silos...it will really blow your mind.

West from there, you should drop south of the I-90...a short jaunt down...oh...say, the 79 to Hot Springs.  Then you work your way up through the amazing "Black Hills" taking in Wind Cave National Park...then Custer State Park on your way up to Mount Rushmore!  All quite amazing in their own way and I've promised myself to get back there again someday...

I'm envious of your trip...1tinindian (Leon) and I have bounced around the idea of having a mini FJ rally in the Black Hills...Yeah...we need to make this happen.   :good2:

These are AWESOME ideas and exactly what I was looking for, thank you ALL!  I have been through the Black-Hills on the FJ (on my way to and from Gunnison central rally '05), and with the family in our '77 Chevy conversion van (complete with shag interior and air-brushed mural on the side) for Rushmore and caves and Wall drug.  Its 's an awesome area and am really looking forward to exploring Wyoming!

I read this ...1tinindian (Leon) and I have bounced around the idea of having a mini FJ rally in the Black Hills...Yeah...we need to make this happen this morning and am SUPER pumped for this to happen  :yahoo:  How about for 2015?  I'll be there no exceptions.  There'll be no "I can't take time off work" or "Wyoming just blew up and there's ash all over"....  I'm in.

I'm just 4 1/2 hours south of the Hills, and I'd come to a rally there.

Can't forget... Cowboy boots.  They want to buy boots while we're there!  Any good tack shops or places I should be aware of?

And I'm just 2 hours south of you.........................I'd be in for 2015 (if it's still there, that is...........)

Just don't plan it anytime close to that other, famed Sturgis event............. :flag_of_truce:

Or we could do it during Sturgis and have our own little FJ section.
Just keep your top on.

if this was all said before, i apologize, i just sort of scanned some posts.

i've done two trips out to devil's tower, one solo on the fjr, one with the kids, who were 11 and 7 at the time.  i would def recommend devil's tower.  you can camp at the koa and wake up with the monolith right there.  and they play "close encounters..." every night at dark outside.  my kids loved Loved LOVED the badlands, it was like the world's largest playground for climbing.  it's one of the only national parks where you are allowed to go off the designated paths.  and they have a very cool outdoor astronomy show after dark.  you can imagine how great the view is of stars out there in the middle of nowhere.  oh, and saw the milky way with the naked eye for the first time when we were at devil's tower.  had to drive away from the campsite due to the lights, but still, pretty freaking cool.  that country, west of minnesota, is just beautiful.

I would consider going to a rally there.  Not to interested in Sturgis.  Been there done that.
