Unifilter Mod is Done!

After recieving my lovely box of goodies from Randy a couple of days ago, I decided to start on the easy stuff first.

Tank off, battery disconnected, clamps loosened


And yes , it is much easier to remove the factory airbox by removing the 2 bottom bolts on the mounting tabs and lowering the frame by only an inch, thats all it needs. Then the box simply lifts out through the top after removing 3 bolts holding it. I was thinking, oh well, at least the factory box and filter did the job.


But then I saw this and freaked. Bloody crappy design of the standard box, all the proof you need is here. Oil residue from the crankcase breather I can live with, but look at the fluff and dust and crap that made it PAST the filter. And its because that stupid upside down filter which is held in "tight" by useless wedges. If you haven't had your std box off, do it next service and make sure the filter has been sealing tight. That problem will be a thing of the past now with the Unifilters. I think a carb teardown is on the cards now.


All nicely oiled using Motul filter oil, nitrile gloves makes it easy to "massage" the oil in nicely.


Yep, the tank is installed correctly. That is all the room you now have with the standard box out of the way. I might still make up a rubber flap that blocks off some of the spray from the back tyre that may make to the filters, not sure. The outermost filters do rub on the frame a bit, but they do give a little so fitment is not a problem.


Put her all back together and went for a 20 min ride. All good, no stumbles or rough idle. Did a couple of standing starts with some WOF, no pinging either. So we'll see how things go on an extended run. This is using std jets, ignition mod, custom exhaust cans, only now there is induction noise plus a bit more "pop" from the exhaust while idling. If anything, this mod is good insurance against that crap airbox design, cheap and well worth it. Also factor in a new crankcase breather from Randy as well, pop it on, zip tie it out of the way and off you go.

My friend across the pond...those carbs are nasty dirty...why didnt you pull them and give them a decent cleaning...only takes an hour...you can be sure that grime has made its way all thru them. you can get to 90% of it with a can of carb kleen and some compressed air...pilots ,mains, emulsion tubes,air/fuel adj.bleeds, throttle blades,all easily accessable.  Also, allowing that much more air in the motor,you might consider a pilot change...maybe raise the needle one spot. Just a thought.

Good to see you're using the proper filter oil for foam filters. We have had folks use the K&N filter oil (for paper filters) and then wonder why their UniPods are dry and carbs are dirty.
Don't forget your crankcase filter. When I did my UniPods my FJ had 127,000 miles on the odometer and I was getting a lot of blow by from the worn piston rings, a standard occurance with high mileage engines. When I put the crank case filter on the short oem hose (5" long) I was getting a lot of oil in the filter from the blow by.
What solved the problem was removing the short hose and installing a longer 12" hose. The best I can figure was that the longer hose allowed the hot oil mist to cool, condense, and drain back, before reaching the filter.

I reckon you are right Turbo about more grime being in the carbs. I'll be doing a clean as you suggest probably next weekend, should be interesting.

That's a good tip as well Pat. I've zip tied the new crank breather right below the pod filters, thinking about it now any blow by will be sucked straight into the filters. A longer hose would act like a narrow catch can and miminise mist, has to be a good thing.

Howdy Ken, also got the fork rebuild kit, RPM fork valves, fork springs, crankcase breather, some faring screws,  plus a nifty Motion Pro fork seal driver.

I couldn't get the fork brace or rear shock this time, maybe next year 

The Unifilter mod is really easy to do Ken, and after seeing how the std filter was not doing its job properly, I'm glad I did it.

sounds like your front end will be all sorted out,  i know what you mean about the little wedges that hold in the stock filter, when were you planning on doing up your front end, ? i wouldnt mind watching you do it to learn abit,
