Late June, 2012
I'll go there after the Rally in Nthn C.A.
Who's in?
So are you thinking of hopping on your bike after the WCR and heading directly east to Colorado?
Sounds interesting.. I should have enough vacation time in the bank by then to do such a trip..

I can say that after where we had this years WCR, any and all KOA's suck in comparison.
Not surprising K-man is thinking of doing something similar for a Colorado rally.

Six people for a week, @$2,400?
$400 each?
Under $60 a night?
You tell me where the KOA is that charges less.
If you wanted to pitch a tent or turn up in an R.V, pretty sure you'd find room on 38 acres.

Yea, I agree Garth.
It seems that we have become grown ups..... instead of a bunch of kids at summer camp (which charges $78.00 per night for a tent)
Kudos to Marsh and Klavdy for allowing us to grow the fuck up. :good2:
Klavdy...I'm in for Tellico in 2012 a hop skip and a jump from the WCR. Remember: We ride FJ's. They have long legs.
400-600 miles a day is no sweat.
Cheers! Pat
Pat my good man, I would be delighted to ride with you to Colorado but I'm not too sure if I want to ride to Tellico. (http://www.fjrally.com/picgallery/gallery.asp?categoryid=10)
Our mate Marsh is a bit tied up at the moment but hopefully it wouldn't be presumptuous to consider him being in as well.
So, Bean, you in?
Pat, yeppers.
Fluffy & I, yep.
Wow, what a nice trip, Southern C.A(and Oregon) to Redding, across on the "Loneliest Hwy in America" ,Hwy 50 & Hwy 722, Nevada.
400-500 miles a day?
No worries.

I'm a definite maybe on his. Could happen, and I'm inclined to do it.
Of course you can count me in. :)
I accrue 12 hours of paid time off a month which works out to about 132 hours from now until June. Add that to the 180+ I already have saved up and it shouldn't be an issue taking a 2+ week long rally trip.
Pat.. Our bodies might be "grown up", but quite frankly I don't think we ever actually "grow up". :rofl2:
Sure would LOVE to do this. I'd have to rent a bike, and get plane tickets. Please keep me in the info loop.

I've been able to squeeze three bikes on my trailer, and my SUV (Honda Pilot) tows it well. If we had multiple drivers, maybe we could make it out to CO in what 30 hours?

I lived in CO for 5 years. Had the FJ for the last 2. I know some really sweet rides on the front range. Although I never did take the FJ too far west, not any further west than Vail, I have driven a cage throughout the state, I know it pretty darn well.
Consider incorporating natural hot springs. There are some great ones and they are plentiful further west and throughout the southern range. Many are unspoiled and natural, (not the "oatmeal pits" Klavdy fears...)

I love those sort of hot springs, it's the grotty hotel ones that I find loathsome.
Dan, drive out mate, bring your 750.
It would rock on the roads we'll be on
You can take my Tuono for a ride,be interesting to hear your comparisons.
I spent last weekend in Durango, CO (I went to college and lived there for about 7 years - 14 years if you count a 20 mile radius) and went to Orvis Hot Springs about 7 miles outside of Ouray. It is clothing optional. Cool place at night...
I also took a glider ride - making a video of it now.
I'd be game for another CO rally.

Rightyo then, looks like a fair bit of interest is being shown in a Colorado Rally.
There's a couple of ways to do this, one is by asking, one is by telling.
Last time a do was attempted through asking, it just didn't happen.
This proposed Colorado run needs to be timed for after the next West Coast Rally, it's easy enough to find a good place to have it but there needs to be a cut off date for those who intend on going, a date that they have to confirm and pay up by.
It'll be somewhere in the Gunnison, Montrose , Ouray triangle, some fantastic roads around there.
I would love a Colorado Rally - close to Durango - Silverton - Million Dollar Hwy -- Maybe extend the trip and include a rail ride on the narrow gauge -- up to Silverton

Yep, still got the trailer. Stack ratty old dirtbikes in there like cord wood - but three big shiny street bikes might be tricky. We'll have to do some measuring. floor deck area is 6x10 so it should be doable with some minor customizing.
Tow vehicle.. All I have to pull it with is a little ford ranger regular cab. If only we knew someone who rides an FJ and owns a big red extra cab Cummins diesel powered Dodge pickup! :)
Anyway all these details can be worked out, glad to hear your thinking about doing it.. I'll be talking to ya.

Haven't done such a thing in many years, like 20, this could well be a fun time. For me it's a time thing. Say we spend 30 hours getting there -balls out. If we ride for 3-4 days and high-tail-it back, that's pretty much a week of elapsed time. While it is possible, it will need to be planned well in advance.
As for trailers, I have a 5X10 that I have been able to carry three bikes. They were not FJ's though. The bikes were a GSXR750, a Suzuki Bandit 600 and a Ninja 250, none were as big as an FJ, but I suspect we 'might-could' (as they say down south) make it work, it would be tight though.
Here's a pic:
This setup made it from Luray, VA to Thornton, PA, with no drama or damage to any of the bikes.
Clearly though, a bigger trailer would be better.
Food for thought, definitely food for thought.
Dan
Where's Murph?
I would say a larger trailer would be in order. Or only put two FJ's on that. One facing forward, the other backwards.
Remember you're going to have to drive in the Rocky Mountains. A 4cyl engine towing a trailer plus people, gear, etc is not going to be too happy pulling up the long hilly passes.
But, there is obviously enough interest to find a ride out and back. :good2:
About 1,000 miles from Hayfork, CA to Gunnison. Not bad at all.

The Pilot is a 240hp 6 cyl, and it hauls my 4,000lb boat and a car full of people and gear for hundreds of miles at a time, just fine. This includes up the steepest stuff in VA, some of which is considerably more steep, than most anything in CO. While the thinner air plays a role, I'd not think twice about the weight of three bikes, it's more the room of the trailer.
Two FJ's would fit forward with no issues, I am certain of that. I was thinking a third may be able to fit between them facing back, as in the picture, if we removed some end-cans, and/or lifted/ propped the back-end of the middle bike up and away from the other bikes... It would involve building a ramp for the rear wheel of the back-facing bike, maybe 10" high -not too bad.
While generally I agree that a bigger trailer would be better, I would bet a $1.00 that we could safely squish 3 bigger bikes in, if we had to.
Just sayin.

If this is going to happen what do you think the dates for the Colorado rally would be -- I know typically Marsh has the WCR the first weekend after Memorial ( June 1-2 ) so would the Colorado happen the next weekend ... say start on the following Thursday June 7 OR would it start sooner in the week ( just give the boys enough time to get there from the WCR location).
Note - if it did start on the Thursday that could work even if you get there sooner -- get off the bike for a day and do the Durango Narrow gauge -- say on the Wednesday. That gives 3 days do make your way to CO...after all plenty of fun in UTAH.. AND give those persons time to get to CO if they are coming from out of state.
stevecc
If the plan is to ride there after the WCR, I may ride along part way. Donna and I are planning to go to Moab for a couple days of four wheelin. She can drive the truck with her bike in it. :boredom: We'll call her the support vehicle driver.

I wish I could go, but my daughter is getting married on the 16 of June and if I was to go I think there would be something terrible happening. The daughter is going to move to Atlanta after the wedding so now I will have a place to go on holidays(with the FJ) I hope.

I totally agree, K-man!
The only reason I made it to the ECFR last time was that I made up my mind to do it.
I didn't debate it with my wife, I just told her I was going, I was even short on cash to be comfortable for such a trip, but it all worked out, and added to the experience.
The way I look at it, I will only have just so many years of my life left to be able to ride a motorcycle before I'm fit for a rocking chair, and I damn well want to look back on my life and remember the great rides I have been on.

Now how god damn stupid is that?
When one word is substituted for another, but the meaning stays the same, before you know it, "FIRETRUCK" becomes a "dirty" word.
Genius!

where are you guys planning on staying in colorado. Im from colorado springs and would love meeting up and riding with you guys if you didnt mind. Plus i know my way to some pretty awesome and senic routes.
OK folks, I have not seen any information on a location for next years Colorado rally. I know that many on here are interested in nicer accommodations than a KOA or similar. I have just contacted Three rivers resort just north of Gunnison Co. to get information of what they have to offer us as a group.

Give the site a look.... let me know what you think...

Good onya Eric, that looks a beaut spot.
I'd be as happy with that as anywhere.
Ooh,look!

Some of the two bedroom cabins have their own deck with a firepit and hot tubs.
I'M IN! It's just a short ride to get into Colorado for me I'm there.
I will post when I get a response from them, I will call if I dont get an email back from them. We need to get this moving forward....

I definitely get one of the places with the hot tub...I'll fight for it if necessary...

I'm reasonably certain you are the reason Klavdy pointed it out, Marsh, and not in a good way. I seem to recall something about public hot tubs being 'oatmeal pits' and Klavdy being afraid of them, like some folks are afraid of spiders, snakes and clowns etc.
Dan
Don't you be hating on Clowns, now.
We want Dean to come.
Have any of you guys thought of maybe riding to the summit of Pikes Peak?
I have just read that it is now completely paved.
Just to give you an idea of distance, it is roughly 170 miles from Gunnison, or 3.5 hours.
No doubt it would be a full day of riding, but I'd love to give it a go.
I'm open to all your thoughts.

We've got to go to Pikes Peak, that's a beaut idea.
Pikes peak is a good run - here's the page from the album from 1990 from a trip I made in my early FJ years -- cross the US from Toronto. Also, there is the HIGHEST paved road in America in Colorado but it is not as scenic as the Pikes Peak run -- This paved road goes to Mt Evans.. goes up 14264'

If we decide to ride Pikes Peak, should we be looking at a base camp to ride from that is maybe closer than 3.5 hours away?

Well, if things are to go as planned, the west coast riders will continue directly to Colorado following their Rally on the weekend of Jun 1 - 3.
That would make the week of Jun 4, Monday through the 9th, Saturday, the week of the Colorado Rally.
At this point, this is how I understand it to be.
Leon
Well Alright we have a date for the Colorado rally June 4-9 2012. I need a head count for how many are going to show up.
I received an email back from Jen Stevens a resort manager at Three Rivers resort.
"Thank you for your interest in staying at our resort. In order for us to help you plan your stay we would need to know a few more details such as what date ranges are you looking at, how many people or # of cabins will you need, length of stay, and any information you can provide about what a "motorcycle rally" means. We are largely a family resort where people come for peace and quiet so before we accept a motorcycle group, I would need a few more details about how loud your bikes are when you would be firing them up to ride in/out of here and what kinds of group activities you would be doing on site here at the resort."
"For more info on our resort and especially lodging, you may want to view our website below. We have 62 total lodging units in about 17 different styles, so a little something for everyone from rustic cabins to upscale cabins, a couple of vacation homes as well as hotel style rooms."
http://www.3riversresort.com/ (http://www.3riversresort.com/)
Take some time to check out the website to see if thats where we want to be.
There are several rv style campgounds in the area and a KOA as well.
PM me if your interested in attending the Colorado rally, I will create a file to keep up with who will be attending, and get back with the resort for more info.

Long as you make them perfectly aware that we are not a bunch of pirate fags on open piped ditch pumps, we should be cool.
Say we like to sleep in, commune with nature and shit.

Sign me up for Colorado 2012. If we leave after WCR the dates maybe more like June 6-10, its about 1000 mile ride Porterville to Gunnison.

To All Who Might be Traveling to Colorado Rally from the WCR 2012.
What do you think your ride will be to get to Colorado on the Sunday - Monday days following the WCR -- Will you burn straight through on a southerly route --hwy58 --I15 or go north and across Yosemite -- to Reno to Colorado then down. If you have an idea let me know as I probably can't make it to CR2012 for the whole week but I am considering following the troops till Tuesday.

Kid yourself all you want Pat, but NOTHING, save for some wine, and generally, that which is grossly immature, get's better with age. While it could certainly be argued that Klavdy is indeed 'grossly immature' his age is just not a positive here. As for 'treachery' I suspect Dean, can hold his own on that front as well.
Pat: assuming we can actually get these knuckleheads to race, I would in fact bet you that $20.00 USD that Dean crosses that 100 yard line, before Klavdy does. You in?

Just sayin, I'd pit up another $20 that Klavdy could not tie and gag Dean without mortal injury... I'm in for that 40 -you in?
Yea, I know what Deano does for a living..... I met him a couple of years ago at Tellico.
The first time I saw Dean I could not believe it. It was at a fast food hamburger place in Tellico and Dean was wearing a pair of Coke bottle glasses...I mean these things had so much glass, they had to weigh 10 lbs. Dean was obviously wearing them to see what my reaction would be...
I'm thinking, holy shit, how can this guy ride a motorcycle?...He's frigging blind!
The look on my face must have been priceless. Dean got a good laugh out of that....Yea, my first impression of Dean was a lasting one.
A good stout fellow Dean is,. I sure a hell wouldn't fuck with him.....but then again, I'm not Klavdy.
There's no telling what that convict comes up with, we all know Klavdy is quite a creative bloke.
You know Dan thinking about it, it just might be worth $40 to me to see what the Kman comes up with(?)
He knows he can't beat Dean in a footrace, that is unless a bear is chasing them...
However, if they were running from a swarm of wasps.....

There are 2158 members of this forum. Of these, conservatively, perhaps 100 have actually attended a rally. I am one of them, although admittedly, not recently. This puts me in the top 4.63% of rally attendance on this list.
In the interest of making good on my now $40 bet with Pat, in the unlikely event I lost either, I will commit right here, right now to attend the next rally that both Dean and Klavdy attend.

Holy crap Leon-
I really can't believe this, but it seems you are STILL wound up about that 1 FUCKING COMMENT?!! I had to go back and look at what has kept you pissed off all these years, here it is, in all of it's unedited splendor:

I think you may have found all 5 turns in IA!. Thanks for the footage. I know that part of the word fairly well as I've done RAGBRAI twice, in ('94 and in '97). Seems it has not changed much!
To Marsh's point, it did make me cringe, to see you cross that center line over and over again. I actually showed my kids as an example of something to never do -sorry. I know this is unsolicited, but if I were you I'd work on saying between the lines on you side of the road. It's a skill that will pay off in spades when you get to twistier roads. -end rant.
That is nice footage, where did you mount the camera?
Cheers!
Dan
I don't give a crap how you ride, I do not believe I am necessarily a better rider than you. You posted a video in a public forum, and I, like others, commented. This one comment seems to have been the genesis of Leon believing I have it out for him; You have manufactured this entire thing Leon, the only time this ever has even crossed my mind is when you bring it up again.
Dude, I have tried to let you know you have me wrong, I have.

Don't get upset Dan, I didn't mean it to piss you off.
I think you were my eye opener, and I thank you for that.
Sometimes it takes comments like yours to make a positive change for me.
But I do really look forward to riding with you, it'll be great!
I have no expectation of trying to keep up with you, or anyone else.
I'm getting too old to bust my ass just for the glory of it.
While at Tellico, the over-riding thought on my mind was, #1- not to cross the center line, and #2- not to go down, and #3- I'll eventually catch up to the group.
Funny as it may sound, but I'm more concerned of damaging my bike, than actually getting hurt!
Crazy I know, but I figure if I keep the bike clean and safe from any damage, I too, will be the same, physically.
Let's just make sure we both can make it out to Colorado, and we can enjoy each others company.

Yep, I can relate. That is, until I biffed that corner last summer. Now the '84 will end up being even better than it was before the accident. Cool.
My point is, absolutely ride within your limits...No question... but then don't be afraid of dropping your FJ. Really, it's no big deal. It's all fixable.
4 broken ribs and sneezing, now that's a big deal.
I hear ya Pat.
I just rememeber wrecking my Suzuki back in 87.
I bought it new and it didn't have a scratch on it with only 9100 miles on it.
Sure, I rebuilt it and still have it today.
True, most people that see it would never guess that it had been wrecked, but it still sux.
Now, the injuries I had with that event have healed very nicely, but once in a while I do still get a hint of pain in the middle of my back where I landed.
I just really don't need a repeat of wrecking a nice bike again (my current FJ) and getting injured. And if going a little slower and taking my time keeps that risk to a minimum, I'll want to ride for as long as I am able to.
Crazy, ain't it? We all know the risks, but we still seek the thrill of the ride.
Damn that double edged sword!!! LOL!
Leon

Are we still thinking about the first full week in June?
That is the week I put in for vacation.
If we need to change dates, lets do it soon so I can make sure my vacation will be in the books ahead of others.

I joined severaldays ago, but have been busy dissecting an 86 FJ. Need any parts?
As for the Colorado rally, I'm in if the dates are Monday June 6th thru whenever. I've read 10+ pages of posts on the subject and nothing seems definite. I have a conflict with Saturday and Sunday June 4 and 5th. My friend who lives in Boulder drove back to PA for Christmas, it was only 26 hours.

Here is a quote of mine from page 7.
QuoteWell, if things are to go as planned, the west coast riders will continue directly to Colorado following their Rally on the weekend of Jun 1 - 3.
That would make the week of Jun 4, Monday through the 9th, Saturday, the week of the Colorado Rally.
At this point, this is how I understand it to be.
Leon
Like I said earlier, I have already put in for vacation the week of Jun 4th (Monday).
I have no problem changing things at this point, but if we decide of a different week, I need to know ASAP.
Oh,Carey, you might want to look at a 2012 calander to get your dates straight! LOL!

Looking at the 2012 schedule, I have an obligation for June 2 and 3 2012, so June 4th to whenever is good. Looks like I get my cake and to eat it too.

klavdy,
I'll be glad to make arrangements. One question, what region of Colorado do we want to use for a base camp? I've only been to Denver and the Fort Collins area, but I'm npt familiar with any of the area with good roads. IIRC, the last Colorado rally was in Gunnison. Do we want to stay in that area?

WOW, just seeing this for the first time. Really need to get on here more often. Had a trip planned to CO for mid march that went to shit. But I'm up for this. So I either need to hook up with a group heading west or we can use my truck which will hold one more FJ in the bed or more with a donated trailer. Whats the plan?

OK Paddy, K-man, Marsh & other left-coasters considering the Colorado trip; I'm trying to figure out a timetable to get from Porterville-ish to Colorado. I've kinda penciled some dates, travel days, etc. **if we're travelling as a group (pack?).** I'm open to input, this is a 1st draft.
May 31-travel to Porterville
June 1-2 Ride Porterville Rally
June 3 Return home?
June 5-7 Ride to Colorado (from a tbd central location?)
June 8-9 Colorado Rally
June 10-12 return to Kalifornia
Useful comments?
Looks good mate,couple questions:
Are you riding to Porterville or driving "Big Ed"?
Is Mrs Ed coming with you? (to the rallies)
Reason being, if you drive the Big Ed rig, people can maybe chuck some small, bulky stuff in with you,i.e. spare cold weather clothes, pillows, whatever.
People could throw in for gas money if they want you to cart their shit.
If Mrs Ed isn't coming out to Colorado and you drive, there would be no lack of takers for a seat.
They could chuck in Gas money.
Hell, get a U Haul trailer, result!
As last discussed at home, her plan was to make Porterville, then drive the "Big Ed" home, while I go on to parts east. To me it rather defeats the purpose of the rally to go all that way riding in comfort ...WTF am I saying here??? I dunno, she has to get home somehow, I can't leave her in Porterville, that would be cruel! Now you see why I'm asking questions.
Sweet, Mrs Ed is coming, makes it easier all round.
Means if you cant carry shit to Colorado from Porterville, dont bring shit to Porterville and expect to see it in Colorado.
Or something.

Well, it make no sense for me to ride home after the WCR as it is a two day ride one way.
I don't see any reason why it would be a problem to get into CO a couple of days early, or just take the scenic route and burn up some time.
I'm good with whatever..

Ok, in an effort to get this rally moving forward I've done the following.
I do not know who wants to ride what/where in Colorado, so I referred to a book I've owned for some time about Sceneic Rides in the US. The book is broken down by state/region. I've highlighted the recommended rides onto the Colorado pages of my atlas and scanned them into a pdf, and attached the pdf to the post right above this post (look up)
Looking over the map, it appears there are several areas with recommended rides. The SW corner from Durango to Grand Junction seems to have the most recommeneded miles, the North Central area has Estes Park, which promises to be very scenic and the South Central area has the fewest recommended miles, but includes Pike's Peak.
For lodging, Glenwood Springs seems reasonably equidistant to each of the riding areas. I will be making reservations in this area. What I need is a head count.
Who's in for sure? (June 4th -10th)
[edit]: Carey, I moved the map out of the Files section and put it right above this post. Pat

I wasn't sure on some of the roads around Denver - they seemed to be highlighted but I couldn't tell for sure. I added the run from Durango to Pikes Peak as there was some mention of going there as well. If you want me to add any or delete any just give me Hwy numbers in succession and I can add them. On the map you should see the Durango loop - then at the north point of the loop a run to Grand Junction -- a loop around Colorado Nat Mon. and then and loop East of Grand Junction. The Denver area loop was my best guess but it may be in error.
Clicking on each color group should give you the details of each leg.
Be sure to try to find out if there is any road construction scheduled on (or anywhere near) the routes. Construction delays in Colorado can take hours. Usually, it's the only road in the area, so you can't use an alternate route to go around.
I had delays over Wolf Creek Pass and between Southfork and Lake City/Creede. Got so frustrated I turned around and parked the bike for the remainder of the week. I don't think they do construction over the weekend though, but it can be terrible during the week.
DavidR.
I just recieved my Mad Maps for CO. It has even more roads highlighted aloing with mileage of the loops.

Looking for some guidance on accomodations. I've found nice house rentals that sleep 10-16 people. The cost would be in the $400/week/person +/- range. The problem is the beds are usually king/queen size meaning 2 people per bed. I don't mind sharing a room, but I'm not a fan of sharing a bed.
I've also found what looks to be a nice hotel like this http://www.cedarlodgemotel.net/index.htm (http://www.cedarlodgemotel.net/index.htm) If we stay at a hotel, we each get our own bed.
What ya'll think? Reseve a block of rooms or rent a house?
I haven't read all of the previous posts so I don't know if Glenwood Springs was decided as the place to stay so ... apologies if the below is out.
Given some of the ride maps I have viewed in this thread... wouldn't Montrose be a more central location. From there you could go north and do Colorado Nat monument roads ( see earlier map ). Then you have the Durango loop if you go south--- and then you also have Black Canyon if you go EAST --- towards Pikes Peak.
I see three beautiful routes -- From Montrose. ..or close to it...Ridgway or Ouray etc
stevecc
Steve,
Other than the dates, nothing has been set at this point. Looking at the routes I posted earlier, it appears to me there are 3 areas to ride. Grand Junction/Durango, Boulder/Estes Park, and Colorado Springs/Pueblo. Looking at those areas, Glenwood Springs seemed more central. If the majority has a preference of what routes they want to ride, I can look for a place central to those areas. So far, I'm not even sure how many peolple to plan for. I think I've seen 6 confirmations, with about 4 more probables.
Where ever we stay, do you have a preference of shariing a bed or sharing a room?

Not to fear Ed! I made a phone call and took care of everything. Everything is available (except 1 of the small A frame cabins for one night).
There are 4 of the typical KOA cabins available for $52.00 per night.
There is 1 two room KOA cabin available for $62.00 per night.
There are 4 of these A-Frame type cabins (of their own design, pics here: http://www.gunnisonkoa.com/AFrameCabins@GunnisonKOA.html (http://www.gunnisonkoa.com/AFrameCabins@GunnisonKOA.html) ) that are available for $35.00 per night.
I cleared them for 3 nights: June 7th, 8th & 9th.
We would also get a 10% discount off of these prices. I would need to secure these fairly soon. Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves. These accommodations would easily sleep 20 people (that is just with two people per room).

Marsh,
I have no problem with KOA. I was under the assumption that the group wanted to rent a house. You know what happens when people assume  The routes riden in 2005 look nice too. They will be new roads for me. With so many the good roads convenient to Gunnison, Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park routes won't be needed.
I'm good with KOA and Gunnison, but a day to make Pikes Peak would be nice to fit in sometime too.
Leon,
Arrive Tuesday/Wednesady and ride Pikes Peak before the West Coasters arrive.

That's mainly just Klavdy. I am happy with the KOA - less logistics and dicking around and people getting stuck with the bill, etc. We really enjoyed Gunnison last time - great town - great roads and variety. Nice KOA - which has gotten WAY nicer apparently from my discussion with the guy on the phone this morning. I grew up in Colorado and have ridden most every road with a twist in it out there. We did a LOT of research for the 2005 rally - Gunnison was decided on after A LOT of vetting. It was a good choice back then - and still is today IMHO. It would be even better this time around with some of the lessons learned from the last time.....like, when you see ride leader Marsh stopped at a mine on a dirt road - don't just ride past him and continue on for 20 miles assuming this is the actual ride road....he is stopped for a reason!! :) or at least, if you ride a BMW GS and think you can rip up the dirt mine roads - make sure you turn off the ABS BEFORE the big downhill section....

The KOA looks fine to me, unless we have more than that coming out... :good:
FYI: there is also a nice Rodeway Inn right by the KOA that I stayed at the summer before last. Great owners - very MC friendly and cool. It also happens to be right behind that Mexican restaurant restaurant we all ate at during the 2005 rally. There are a lot of rooms there - so spill over from the KOA would be no problem.

You can put the wife and I down for attendance if we are taking roll call.
I will probably elect for the hotel route.

My reservation has been made at the KOA. Call 970 641-1358. I spoke with a guy named Michael. Tell him you are part of Marsh White's group.
Marsh, thanks for getting this thing going.
We'll be arriving Tuesday afternoon and leaving Sunday morning.

I see you booked Kabin #4 Carey - the 2 room Kabin - nice choice! I just booked Kabin #3 (the same one I stayed in last time I think). They are officially all held for us now! :good2: Mention "Marsh White" or "Yamaha FJ Group" and switch your desired Kabin over to your name and pay the deposit. See you there!

I have never done this before, so I'll ask.
Will I need to call for a reservation, or can I contact the person that has the cabin reserved to add my name to that cabin?
I assume that with the cabins at full capacity, divided by how ever many it will hold, will just makes it cheaper per person, right?

Leon,
You can do either, call to make a reservation or find someone with a cabin looking for a roommate. If you make a reservation, you are assured of a place to stay and can advertise here looking for some to share the cost. The downside is if you can't find a roommate, but I think the dds are low on that happening.
Yes. The cost is per night divided by the number of people.
Well, yeah, it makes 'em cheaper but there is absolutely nothing in them.
No pillows, no bedding, no phone, fridge, T.V etc, usually cant even make a cup of coffee.
You really need to bring all your shit.
What I've been doing is buy a pillow at the closest store and toss it when you leave, you might even do the same with a sleeping bag.
Pat and I will have a Moka Pot or we'll buy a coffee maker in Gunnison, we both like coffee.
Buy one of those cheap Styrofoam coolers at the local store too, just dump it at the end as well.

Klavdy,
I think Leon will be trailering, so a styrofoam cooler might not be needed. I usually bring a foam pad to put between the mattress and my sleeping bag. The Kabins I've stayed in before are not like my mattress at home.
I will be trailering, if you want I can bring an extra cooler and probably find a coffee maker to bring along. I enjoy a cup of joe in the morning.
Nope, I was talking to my boy Fluffy about the cabin.
Carey, good onya mate, by all means bring a spare cooler or two and a coffee maker, anything like that would be most appreciated.

And you're right, I will be hauling the FJ in the truck like last year.

Anyone else catch on their website that there's an Air Show on the second Saturday of June at the Gunnison Airport?
Wow!
No one does an Airshow like the Seppos, you got a link to it Bean?
Bloody hell, bet there will be Mustangs and B17's and stuff.
My reservation is made. Looking forward to it. Looks like I need at least three weeks off work which won't be a problem since I have about two months of PTO saved up. :good2:
As far as the air show, I haven't come up with much in a quick search but I did find a few pictures and it doesn't look to be a major production. Still might be fun to check out.
I have booked a cabin but I am not sure I have the time off or whether I can miss my daughter's Graduation on June 6. Stay tuned.

Change of plans..
My son told me he definately plans on going with me, soooooo...
I had to tell Carey what was going on so I called for reservations and missed the last 1 room Kabin by 1 day, so I took one of the last 3 A-frames.
Just glad to have a place to stay for the rally, but if a bigger Kabin opens up and somebody needs a couple of guys to help share expences, I'm sure we can work something out, just PM me and let me know.
regardless, I'm thrilled to be going and can't wait to get there.
Our plan puts us into the KOA sometime Wednesday the 6th, most likely in the late afternoon.
Leon
I was just looking over my plans for the rally. This movie seems to go over our routes exactly, at least the first 10 minutes. I think it is a must watch for anyone planning to attend. If you have Comcat/Xfinity cable, it's on demand this month under Free Movies.

A-frame cabin booked for Donna and myself. Looks like the California rally is out for us this year. We were planning to do some four wheelin in Moab on the way to the WCR. The Colorado rally makes more sense as its only a few hours drive from Moab. Getting pretty excited about the trip. It'll be great to see you guys again, and a few new faces as well.

WCR riders, what route will you be taking into Colorado?
I'm getting into Gunnison the day before you guys and I'd like to ride towards you and meet at some location for the ride back into Gunnison.
Anyone else interested in riding west and meeting our WCR friends??
It may totally depend on when they plan on getting to the KOA, as to how much time we'd have to ride out and meet them...
Just a thought I've had, so if it doesn't work out, I'm sure we will have something else to do before they get there.
Leon
O.K. so a really dumb question so I don't have to read through 17 pages of threads. And I appoligize it been forever since my last post. Exactly what date is the Colorado rally? I'm assuming it's in Gunnison? if So I'd would love to join. I'll probably camp at Blue Mesa Reservoir in the RV. Yes I'll tow the bike which I know is cheating but I'll have a place to stay. If the wife and family doesn't decide to join I'll have 4 beds available - all I ask is to pitch in for diesel.

It's apparently on the 2nd weekend of June, mate, and no doubt we'll be staying at the Gunnison K.O.A.
I haven't been on the site in so long, I almost missed all the posts pertaining to the upcoming Colorado Rally.
After the move to Denver last summer, things have been a whirlwind of activity, and lets just say that last year wasn't altogether kind to me.............
I was able to rearrange some of my summer vacation schedule, and I believe I have secured the absolute very last of the accomodations at the KOA.(at least the ones that aren't bring-your-own-roof)
I must say that the owner is a very friendly, and generous soul.
I'll be arriving Wednesday the 6th, and am looking forward to riding with all of you again.
And for those interested in doing a ride up Pikes Peak, I'm game for that.
Everyone ride/drive safe, and I'll see you there!

Hope ya finally got your (embroidered) aussie version I gave ta Klav. - (I want a pic of it over there - but was kinda hoping it would be on a prettier face). I can send the logo`s over there if ya like. ..... incl the logo with the years 1984 - 1993 of course. :rofl2:
Now that I think of it, we`d only have ta change the "Australian Rally" logo to "Seppo rally" - Probly have it done in time for ya. (WHoooop! WHOOOOOOOOP! -- That`d be extra....though we could get in some extra "O"`s on you.) Doug
Yes Doug that would work but you would also need to change the 93 to 95 instad of Sepppo make it WCR or Colarado :rofl2:

Heading out in a few for the CO rally.
Lots of rain on tap starting tonight in Portland, so I'm going to get a head start and ride about 4 hours to Pendleton, OR and stay there for the night. I'll be far enough east to miss all the rain that's coming.

Yea, well we didn't get into one of those fancy ass cabins....They (KOA) had us out in the back swamp area. I knew we would be in trouble when a a swarm of mosquitoes started to carry my tank bag away..... and a 300 yard dash to the restrooms? No thanks.
After all....We were on VACATION !! (but it was no Disneyland....right Andy?)
agreed, that was no tellico plains koa, and definitely not a boone koa...

Quite a few of us rode on RT92, the North rim of Black Canyon. Dean, Henry, and I rode the Black Rim road as marked on MadMAps to connect with Rt374 on the South rim. MadMaps was not accurate, because these two roads do not connect. We had to back track on 6 miles of gravel.
