I had emailed Joann at the KOA in Boone and thanked her for having us up there yet again....here's her reply
"Hey Nancy - As always it is our pleasure to have you camp with us. I am glad you had some great weather in between the rain. You all take care and we will be looking forward to next year. I am going to set up everyone's reservations - I think for the third week - is that correct? Happy Riding...Joann"
Now that's a GREAT KOA, an owner that goes ahead and knows we'll be back and to make our reservations...

Is it safe to assume that the ECSR will be May 15-20 this year? If so, I've requested that week off!!! If not, I'll have to adjust my schedule accordingly.
If anyone can confirm the dates, let me know.

I'm looking forward to making this rally and meeting some of you in person.

Figured that.. Same here.
The numbers are not good. 4000 mile round-trip. Even if I take 9 days that means 5 days driving my ass off for 4 days of riding. Compared to Boone, pure riding. (and Macado's)
dan-o,
i'm going to try and do both, and by that, i mean i'm planning on doing the colorado rally, and so boone may be a thursday to sunday quickie.
I plan on doing both. Logistics for Colorado are unknown at this time but if I do Colorado its gonna have to be with at least one other driver.

I will be going - from Baltimore, south through Leesburg to Charlottesville, and then west to Afton Mountain and down BRP.
Not a camper - does anybody know of any decent hotels near Boone?
Are there any rides that go down to Ashville? My older daughter and my son-in-law have announced they are going to move there with grandkids someday. So I need to go see the town I will be moving to.

Boone is a college town, so plenty of places to stay.
Rally rides tend to avoid cities & towns, so we have only been to Asheville once on a ECSR ride (that I recall), and that was a navigational error. We did have a nice lunch at the Texas Roadhouse across from the Biltmore Estate.
It's a great town, but not likely to be a rally destination, unless you just happen to find someone else who wants to check it out.

Don't know what kind of time table you have for for getting to Boone from Baltimore. But if you pick up the BRP at the beginning on Afton Mountain, Rockfish Gap, it is a deceptively long ride to Boone on the parkway. Around 300 miles of 45mph all the way - basically a full days ride right there. And there's no gas on the parkway so you'll have to get off for fuel. And it's more tiring and you'll be stopping more than a typical 300 miler too. curve, curve, curve all day long - doesn't that sound like pure hell? :yahoo:. Just account for extra travel time on it.
If you can go from Baltimore, to Afton to Boone via BRP in one day, I reckon you could give Iron Bike Mike Ramos a run for his money.
the ride down the BRP from Afton Mtn is definitely a long ride but if you have never done it then its required riding.... plan on taking the extra time and enjoying the scenery.... it truely is magnificent!
55 mph on the parkway wont get you pulled over as long as you arent doing anything stoopid.... like passing over the double at the same time.
I would ,however, advise watching your speed in the 35mph speed zones as they are near the public centers and the most likely places to see a ranger. (there arent that many rangers on the BRP anyway)
KOokaloo!

Frank,
Is this based on actual experience? :rofl2:
Thanks to all for the tips.
I will be staying overnight with some fellow Wahoo alums in C'Ville. So it will be about 340 counting the ride out 250 West to Afton.
I remember that the BRP takes a while - I took it (together with Skyline Drive) from Front Royal VA to Roanoke in 1989 to take the Virginia Bar exam. It WAS an all day affair. I was able to get away with 55 to 60 as I recall -- it was the middle of the week so traffic was not too bad. I was figuring averaging 50 mph while riding, and not stopping a whole lot.
However, I distinctly remember there was gas in some of the recreational areas/attractions on the Parkway. I remember seeing one station (after it had closed for the day -- DOH!)) somewhere north of Peaks of Otter. Wound up hitting reserve and getting off on 53 and descending into Nelson County and getting gas at the bottom of the mountain.
Now, this was 23 years ago. Did they discontinue selling any and all gas up there?
(Or am I once again remembering things that did not happen. Hey, it's better than forgetting the things that really DID happen!)
My FJ1100 gets 50 mpg at those speeds so maybe I can make it to from Afton to Roanoke for gas.

There's plenty just a stone's throw away at a lot of places, though.

"If a man is talking in the forest, and no woman is there to hear him, is he still wrong?"
Yes, he is.
Men are always wrong, regardless of the venue. In the house, in the car, in the forest, in the bar. On a train. On a plane.
I learned that lesson early on.
(Much cheaper than a divorce.)

As long as she does not get the FJ, it might be worth it....
No way man. I'm keepin her!
1. Very low maintenance.
2. Good solid frame.
3. Suspension sagging a bit compared to new, but much bettter than most her age (53) and still very appealling.
4. No unusual noises or other signs of imminent breakdown. (Grunts a bit under load, but she always did that.)

LOL it's based on my last conversation with a local ranger...and no i wasnt being written a ticket at the time either
I havent had a ticket on the BRP since 2005..... and it was for 70 in a 45.... cost me 80 bucks. Luckily for me North Carolina does not accept park ranger tickets on my state drivers license. I just mail in the money and life goes on.
I told the ranger (who thanked me for actually stopping) i would be back that way later in the day so if he could just make the ticket for 160.00 now then he could just wave the checkers for me later to save us both some time. :good2:
BTW the rangers wont chase you if you dont stop.... if they crash their cars or hit a deer they are responsible for their own repairs.... if one is being really stoopid then the plentiful wildlife will take care of slowing you down permanantly and the rangers know that.

$80.00 for 70 in a 45?????
That's a deal!!!! Cheaper than a ride on the Cyclone in Coney Island (which my Grandfather built, btw).
Geez, that's a total bargan!
I paid $165 for a lousy 66 in a 55 (conveniently 11 over which jumped me into the more expensive bracket), back in October in Arkansas.
Another reason I need to get back to a rally soon, it's cheaper!
DavidR.
I paid $25 for the ticket in TN, but it was $100+ in court costs. But no points.
My wife has trumped me this year and has already planned a girl scout overnight trip that weekend. So I've got to stay at the ranch with the other kids.
Well, at least on Monday, if there is no snow, I'll be getting some Race Tech gold valves, new springs and a new Penske shock for the FJR.

At least that week I'll have some fun!

Hi Cody,
The site is a little confusing. Is there indeed going to be a 2012 East Coast rally on the weekend of 12 -13 May? If so is everybody staying at the campsite? I started to look at some hotels in Boone on that weekend, and they are filling up so fast I can't believe it. Please "dial me in". I'm new to the site and the group, and its a bit hard to figure out whats going on.
Thanks,
IB
:bye:
IB-
The rally is the 3rd weekend in May, so for this year that means the weekend of May 18~20th. A lot of the crew is there earlier. Some, like Nancy K, as early as Monday. Many will be there by Wednesday night.
We stay at the KOA campground (http://koa.com/campgrounds/boone/). You may want to call and see if they've got any of our cabins open; mention specifically that you're with the FJ crowd. If there's no cabins left unclaimed, and/or you don't want to try and split one with someone else, hotelling would work. You're probably going to want to commute from the hotel to the KOA early in the morning and likely won't go back to the hotel until way late at night, so factor that in. There's a Best Western(?) somewhat close to the intersection of US 421 and NC 194 in Boone. That is probably your best non-KOA option.
Come, have a blast. We don't bite ...much.
As for me, I got a bunch of deferred maintenance done on the DRZ. If I can figure out how to drag the rest of my crap up there, I'll be all set. Can't wait!

Thanks,
IB

Thats graduation week for Appalachian State University... Hence the reason for the hotels being booked up.
They have a pretty good variety of accomodations available at the Boone KOA so you can stay close to the big fire and not have to drive to and from town (unless ya want to)
KOokaloo!
HEY Stu, you want Jeff and I to stop and pick up the rest of your crap as we come thru on Monday?

Can't wait!

but again, that's not even the right weekend to be thinking about. the fj rally is the third weekend in may. you're (buddha) looking at the second weekend in may.

I figured out a way - carry it on the bike... (it will all come off pretty quick)

The bummin' level is risin' as May approaches. Hope the weather gods shine nicely on y'all. Gonna miss the fireside BS, as well as he roads (and the livermush).
Nancy, since I won't see you, wanted to let you know that my oldest girl has been riding ponies since the fall. She's trotting and posting and loving it.
Ah Chris, YOU are SOOOO in trouble. That's a lifelong thing. Just ask me. I'm glad she's enjoying it. Bring her along one time, she and I can find something to do non-motorcycle.

THANK YOU all for posting and catching me up on the event. I have no problem camping out. I lived in a tent for 3 months with about 12 other guys when I was with the US Navy Seabees in Bosnia. Daytime wasn't that bad, but it got about 20 below at night. Kerosene heaters, and high-tech sleeping bags saved our lives. I hope you'll have room for me at the site. Or I may have to do what we did at Leguna-Seca one weekend. Made a "lean too" shelter using our motorcycles as the "shelter". Chilly but effective...LOL!
Hey Dudes,
I've went ahead and reserved a cabin! They say 4 can stay there, so maybe I'll get some roommates if some guys need a place to sleep. I made it for Friday the 18th, and Saturday the 19th. I'm not sure what the schedule is but I'll probably bag-ass on Sunday afternoon. Just a few things I want to say here. The first is that I live on a ship here in Norfolk, Va. (my home is actually in Jacksonville, and Pensacola, Fl.). I'm only a 6 hour ride away from Boone. I bought an old 1980 XS850 Midnight Special from a guy on Ebay who lives up in Edinburg, Va. earlier in the year. When I went up there to pick-up the bike it was just the most relaxing drive and the most beautiful country I have seen in a long time. I vowed that one of these days I was going to ride one of my bikes back up there just for the view. Well, I was quite surprised that Boone, NC is basically in the same neck of the woods (about 5 hours South). So I'm overjoyed to be heading back to that part of the country. Especially if I can meet other bike "nuts" like me LOL! My old group I belonged to was the TMIOA (you can Google), but I never could make it to a rally.
The only hurdle to this whole deal is the fact that I do work and live on a MSC ship. Our schedule is always changing. I even let the campground know I may have to canx if the ship decides to go to sea.
Either way, I really look forward to the rally. Take care all. BTW - I did post a pic of my FJ on the site.

Dude! That stinks. :sorry: I was just about to hit you up for second annual ride down.. Are you sure you can't weasle out of whatever it is? If you need some weasle-ing tips contact me...
Any other east coasters riding down to Boone about Wed?
The Jack and I will be arriving sometime Monday afternoon and leaving on Sunday. Jack has Saturday and Sunday
scheduled at Summit Point. We'll leave there after his last run and make it down 81 to somewhere in VA for the
night. So looking forward to seeing you all, especially since we missed Boone last year. We're coming down with
our toy hauler and our dog (she's never been to a rally before). We take her to the track all the time so a rally
will seem tame.
See you in Boone,
Nancy and Jack

My wife is a Daisy and Brownie leader and is on tap for an overnight trip with our two oldest girls that weekend. Gotta stay home and manage my son and our youngest girl. I'll have to make sure there is no conflict next year!
Ride well!

Yeah, I see the abyss that is ahead. Talking to other parents about leasing, owning, etc. Not sure if we'll ever get there. Taking it slowly, for sure.
YIPPEE!!!!!

We'll be getting in some time on Monday as well.

Nancy, I may take you up on that. On the other hand, my crew is making noise about wanting to come up once again. By hook or by crook, we'll get it sorted :)
I just bought a set of Rentec bars from a guy on craigslist that Dads_FJ had posted up in the Parts section. The guy is in the University Area of Charlotte. Any one coming thru that area on the way to the rally that can pick them up and bring them to the rally. Just checking, if not no biggy I'll just get em shipped. MD and I will be at the rally Wed. thru Sun. Look forward to seeing everyone soon.
Dan-
I'd be happy to pick 'em up for you, but afraid I'm not going to have room to strap them down on the Stuabago.

I've emailed with Lindsay (not sure where Joann is), and she advises there are only 2 kabins left to reserve for the rally, and one of them is the "Norbert" (you know, the fancy schmancy one). As in past years, if they don't get reserved by our group by a certain date, she will "unlock" them to the general public for reservations. So if you haven't reserved one and need to, giddy up!
Unfortunately, I am not going to make it (despite my earlier plans).
Wife's only vacation time in the past 1.5 years has to be that week (she's getting a doctorate at UVa while working full time).
Will get there someday.
Anybody passing through Va next Wed want to meet up for the ride down let me know. I'm leaving out of Richmond Va area around 6 or 7am with no itinerary, other than Boone by dark. Also a possibility of meet up for lunch somewhere, Mabry Mill or some where in that area.
danny.
danny,
assuming the weather cooperates, perhaps some of us monday and tuesday arrivers can meet up with yous at mabry mill again this year.
Way to go Deano. You've gone and posted something about the weather. Everyone bring your wet suit. Maybe you can spend the week cleaning your bike and letting the rain wash off the soap.
:-)
DavidR.
I think we are screwed regardless this year.. last years weather was way too nice. Bring your snorkel and fins.
You mean be ready for this :rofl2:

Ah yes, good times! :good2:
Eh, I don't mind a little rain.
It's the workload that appears to have cleared up in time for this weekend, which is "sunny skies" for me. I'm taking my stepdaughter to school on the FJ in 15 minutes, coming home, and loading up a tent and sleeping bag.
See you lot in about 12 hours.
Hey guys - I just wanted to let you know that I created a "FJ Rally Photos" section in the "Gallery" section of THIS website. There is a subcategory there for this 2012 Spring Rally. Hope you guys are having fun over there and I can't wait to see the photos!
P.S. I'm going to phase out the FJRally.com photo gallery and work on moving those photos over here. The photo gallery on this forum is MUCH more feature rich than the one on the FJRally.com site. At least here we can do multiple uploads! :)
