Do your bags sag? I recently bought some Ogio soft saddle bags to carry excessive crap around, but had an issue. They sagged so far that the bottom would rub on my rear brake caliper. No matter how tight I adjusted them I could not get them to sit straight. It was time I took matters into my own hands and dreamed up a fix. Attached are the brackets that I fabricated and installed to remedy the problem. Hopefully the photos explain enough, but if not please just ask questions. :good2:

nicely done! Did you do the rack also or is that an available item commercially?
Thanks again. I got the rack from a forum member and then heavily modified it to want I wanted.

Nice job Bob. You ought to post this in the Files section under modifications too.
Didn't think it was going to be that popular so I didn't even think of that. Moderators- Do I need to re-post, or can it just be copied and moved over some other way?

Very cool! So simple yet very effective.
One thought I had was to put some Velcro on the brackets and the bags. That would help keep them in place and not slide around.
Just a thought...
I actually thought of using half of the velcro idea of yours originally. They don't slide around at all, but I was worried that the steel might rub through the bags eventually. I was going to put just the "loop" part of the velcro on the bracket. Still may too, even though I buffed the steel super smooth before paint and prime.

Hey Bob, Wish I'da thought o' this before I trashed my new bag on the tire on the way to the rally. Nice design!
Doug
Mine never got as far over as to rub the tire, but it was close. My main deal was that it rubbed while running over big bumps or riding double, and then was starting to wear a hole through the bottom of the bag where it hit the brake caliper arm. No longer an issue now. Sorry to hear about you trashing a brand new bag.
A good solution Bob. Well done. Not obtrusive, very stealthy. I too experienced a hole rubbed into my right bag.
If you are going to make any more, please put me down for 2 sets.
I will move this over to the FJ Modification Files section.
Just got done making a set today for "carsick".
Please PM me and we can work out the details, no problem. And thanks for the promotion to the files section. Glad I could help.
Scooterbob, did you know that your saddlebag brackets saved my ass in my last low side accident?
Yep, I went down on my R side and they kept my R side soft bag from collapsing against the bike and thus, along with saving my seat and bodywork, the bag absorbed the blow and kept my bike off my right leg.
Your bracket allowed the soft bag to stay in place....Thank you Bob for such a bitchen idea and product.
I did think of you while I was sliding down the road....good thoughts! Again Thank you!
Glad to hear I helped save your ass. Wasn't the original design intention, but glad to hear it's a dual purpose thing. Maybe I should re-title the heading to "Stop your bags from saggin' and your ass from draggin'!"
That's a good idea. I think that I'll whip a set of those up this winter. Also, could you post some more detailed pictures of that rack and the mounts? I really like rear luggage racks, even though they seem to be out of style. I think that they're a really versatile solution. Plus, I absolutely HATE the way top cases look.
I've been meaning to make a rack for my '84, and it would be a help to see how you've done it.
Email with photos already sent. Let me know if further details are needed.
Wow.. It looks like you did an awesome job! I don't suppose you have measurements on where the bends and welds are?

Very sorry it took me so long to reply. To be honest, I forgot about it until now.
Anyhow. It's a total of 4 pieces. Two of them are cut at 7 inches long and then bent at 90* after drilling a 3/8" hole one inch (center) from the end. The other two pieces are cut to 4 1/2" inches long and then welded at the edge to the other bent parts. I used 1 1/2" wide x 1/8" thick bar stock, which is more than strong enough to hold.
Let me know if you need more details. I promise to reply quicker.
Bob
You mean like this, only without the welding?

More or less, yes. If it could be cut or stamped from one piece it'd be easier. That would be the left side.

I have access to a 3000W Co2 laser and some 0.125" 304 SST. Oh, and some Solid Design software to make digital prototypes. Oh, and a powder coat shop in-house... Piece of cake..... :dance2:
put me down for a set -- love the laser cut

Stalled on this project, I need a set to reverse engineer. Simi_Ed will loan me his from his 89 when he takes them off and cracks into his tranny for repair....
nice, he,s a generous bloke, , if they turn out half as good as other things you made will be a bulk order for them

Wouldn't mind a set of those for myself. I'd still go with powder coat black though, just because it blends in nicely when the bags are removed.
Just to be sure I get the size correct before having some cut, please confirm the following:
From the 3/8" mounting hole center to the bottom of the first bend is 2.88 inches, from the front of the flange with mounting hole to the front of the flange with FJowners on it is 3.38. I have the rest of the measurements from your prior post.
Marsh, what font did you use for the "FJowners.com" web page??? I want to use the same font if I can.
do we have Fj owners t shirts yet, you any good at sewing monkey ranger

How about a big heavy laser cut FJowners.com medallion on a thick chain. Each one can have your club name cut in around the outer diameter..... You can have your
Bling if you order the high end model....
Maybe a vest made out of perforated (need to stay cool in the summer) 5052 aircraft aluminum? Not very flexible, that's why I chose a vest, you would need prehensile arms to get through the sleeves. Always thinking...
hmmmmm, all brilliant ideas mate, ill have a vest made from titanium, better sparks if I fall down while staying cool, , , not into bling, maybe just a bracelet made from stainless, would also act as a throttle lock on long rides :good2:
did you ever make those bag mounts, Monkey?
Still trying to get them cut at work... Stay tuned...

And here I thought you were being facetious! That's great access!
I've used small stiff springs with hooks to straighten out my soft bags. The bags have a ring on the inboard side at the bottom and run the other spring hook down to the passenger pegs. It works marginally to straighten the bags. But the bracket is by far the way to go.

....and lesson learned, don't try posting from a "smartphone". Sorry about the repeated quotes....

I made a similar sort of thing to this a while ago to stop my bags sagging . A quick word of warning , put some sponge covered in vinyl on the bit that touches the bag because the vibrations made the bag brace (thats what I called mine ..lol) cut into the bag after a while . Once I coved mine they were ok ! Some rubber would probably work too.
Just my 2 cents

Hi Bob,
I bought my FJ this spring and hooked up my set of TourMaster soft bags. Are you still making these brackets? I'd definitely be interested in a set. Here's a pic of how they look now pretty much empty.
Unfortunately I no longer have access to the welding machine and others things to fabricate the brackets. But there have been some laser cut ones made by another member, so maybe they will chime in with availability details. Sorry.
In Lew of finding some sag brackets, set the upper straps over tight so your bags splay out away from the bike. When the bags are loaded they need to have the lower straps pull them back down in the proper position. I might be able to make more of the Monkey made brackets if my new company permits it. If I do get more made, I will change the font to better represent the FJ owners.
[edit] That was me Scooterbob, and thanks again to your contribution. Your design was a hit and is now on over 20 FJs.
Yes monkey I just installed mine today. Check pics in. 7days after deerkilling.
Getting ready for central rally.

A little off topic, but it appears your tire is wearing off center. Possible alignment issue?
I adjust the chain by the marks on the swingarm so I think I'm ok there. lean the bike towards me when I'm moving it around so it's probably just that. thanks.
