STOP YOUR BAGGAGE FROM SAGGING!

Do your bags sag?  I recently bought some Ogio soft saddle bags to carry excessive crap around, but had an issue.  They sagged so far that the bottom would rub on my rear brake caliper.  No matter how tight I adjusted them I could not get them to sit straight.  It was time I took matters into my own hands and dreamed up a fix.  Attached are the brackets that I fabricated and installed to remedy the problem.  Hopefully the photos explain enough, but if not please just ask questions.   :good2:

nicely done!    Did you do the rack also or is that an available item commercially?

Thanks again. I got the rack from a forum member and then heavily modified it to want I wanted.

Nice job Bob.  You ought to post this in the Files section under modifications too.

Didn't think it was going to be that popular so I didn't even think of that.  Moderators- Do I need to re-post, or can it just be copied and moved over some other way?

Very cool!  So simple yet very effective.

One thought I had was to put some Velcro on the brackets and the bags.  That would help keep them in place and not slide around.

Just a thought...

I actually thought of using half of the velcro idea of yours originally.  They don't slide around at all, but I was worried that the steel might rub through the bags eventually.  I was going to put just the "loop" part of the velcro on the bracket.  Still may too, even though I buffed the steel super smooth before paint and prime.

Hey Bob, Wish I'da thought o' this before I trashed my new bag on the tire on the way to the rally.  Nice design!
Doug

Mine never got as far over as to rub the tire, but it was close.  My main deal was that it rubbed while running over big bumps or riding double, and then was starting to wear a hole through the bottom of the bag where it hit the brake caliper arm.  No longer an issue now.  Sorry to hear about you trashing a brand new bag.

A good solution Bob. Well done. Not obtrusive, very stealthy. I too experienced a hole rubbed into my right bag.

If you are going to make any more, please put me down for 2 sets.

I will move this over to the FJ Modification Files section.

Just got done making a set today for "carsick".
Please PM me and we can work out the details, no problem. And thanks for the promotion to the files section. Glad I could help.

Scooterbob, did you know that your saddlebag brackets saved my ass in my last low side accident?

Yep,  I went down on my R side and they kept my R side soft bag from collapsing against the bike and thus, along with saving my seat and bodywork, the bag absorbed the blow and kept my bike off my right leg.
Your bracket allowed the soft bag to stay in place....Thank you Bob for such a bitchen idea and product.
I did think of you while I was sliding down the road....good thoughts!  Again Thank you!

Glad to hear I helped save your ass. Wasn't the original design intention, but glad to hear it's a dual purpose thing. Maybe I should re-title the heading to "Stop your bags from saggin' and your ass from draggin'!"

That's a good idea.  I think that I'll whip a set of those up this winter.  Also, could you post some more detailed pictures of that rack and the mounts?  I really like rear luggage racks, even though they seem to be out of style.  I think that they're a really versatile solution.  Plus, I absolutely HATE the way top cases look.
I've been meaning to make a rack for my '84, and it would be a help to see how you've done it.

Wow.. It looks like you did an awesome job!  I don't suppose you have measurements on where the bends and welds are?

Very sorry it took me so long to reply.  To be honest, I forgot about it until now.

Anyhow.  It's a total of 4 pieces.  Two of them are cut at 7 inches long and then bent at 90* after drilling a 3/8" hole one inch (center) from the end.  The other two pieces are cut to 4 1/2" inches long and then welded at the edge to the other bent parts.  I used 1 1/2" wide x 1/8" thick bar stock, which is more than strong enough to hold.

Let me know if you need more details.  I promise to reply quicker.

You mean like this, only without the welding?
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Scooterbob

More or less, yes. If it could be cut or stamped from one piece it'd be easier.  That would be the left side.
