I am planning a trip to Vegas this winter. We are traveling in a 40 foot motorhome with a 25 foot trailer. We are taking eight people and eight bikes, mostly FJ's. We will need wheel chocks for the trailer. I remember some guys talking about some that were available. Can someone steer me to some good ones? We need eight so cost is somewhat of a factor.
Also we would like to meet some FJ riders while we are there. Dates will be set soon. Thanks in advance. John
I use a pair of these on my 4'x 8' trailer.
They work great, and can be had with the 20% off coupon about anytime.

Wow those are not expensive at all. Will check them out. Thanks . John
Hauling 8 bikes in a trailer, tie down spots will be at a premium. Going with the Harbor Freight wheel chokes and slight modification of the tie down plates, this kit solves front tie down issues and no worries of nylon straps marring the fairing paint.

PM sent.. oh, and if you are self contained, may have bivy for your crew..
I also added a piece of e-track down the center of the trailer, so I can add tie downs points wherever I want along there.

We do have e-track down the middle and on both walls. Not sure how it will work but we need to place at least 7 in the trailer. We can put one in the storage area of the motorhome. It will be a challenge for sure, but we have some time to configure it. When we know the dates and approx. area we are staying we will post up. It would be nice to do some rides with the west coast guys if available. John.
I am up for a ride with you guys. How about a general target date to help us avoid planning conflicts?

That is what I was looking for, now I can plan to keep that time flexible and more likely to be free to ride. Thanks.
We didn't end up meeting up this Thursday. We will post dates Oct.22nd. John
John....Princess Auto has the same style wheel chock....

A buddy has one and parks his bike in it every night....
A little more dough than HF though...
Cheers..Jake
Thanks Jake. We are getting a Princess Auto in St. Catharines soon. Won't have to drive to Stoney Creek.
We are leaving Southern Ontario on Feb the 12th. Driving straight to the west coast. We aren't sure where we will land at this point. Initially we were thinking of Vegas, however with a 40' motorhome and a 25' trailer we would prefer to cross the mountains as far south as possible. So we will likely arrive in Phoenix or somewhere close by the evening of the 14th. From there who knows.
Once we are sure of the route I will post up again.
Looking forward to meeting and riding with you guys...
FJ Johnnny --- I live in Oceanside and ride with monkey all the time ---- I will assume Feb 12 is 2016 --- there is loads of good riding down here and look forward to seeing some fellow Canadians. I am from Milton originally so we were practically neighbors. I would frequent Niagara Falls quite often in 87-92 with my 86 FJ --- ( still got it too)
My fj is getting ready for california.
Thanks Moparman. We are stoked about this trip. It will be epic. There are five FJ Forum members coming along on this trip. They will and or can identify themselves as time goes on. This is a bucket list item for sure.
Black Betty is ready to roll (90 FJ) as is the 93 GTS. Not sure yet which bike to bring . The GTS is set up for touring better than the FJ, as it has 45 liter bags. There is another GTS coming along as well so maybe four FJ's and two GTS's would be a good mix. John
If you get the dates sorted a little closer, want to travel to central California...
Feel free to add RPM to the list of things to do. We would be glad to have you stop by.
Randy - RPM
I personally would like to stop by the rpm shop while we're down in california.
We would love to stop by RPM for all manner of reasons. Every one of the forum members has been treated well by RPM. As we get closer we will set up an itinerary. John
I'm California dream'n now too! A change in plans has allowed me to take the time for this trip! Thanks for the invitation fjjohnnie! This will be an epic trip for me... a bucket list item, for sure! Looking forward to riding in the warmer climate with fellow FJers down in the golden state.... and a stop to see Randy and the shop, too!

Sounds like a great adventure my birthday is in Feb, if you guys decide to ride Cal. I would be glad to take you guys to the Rock Store, Neptune's Net etc... FJmonkey, Moparman and I live pretty close to each other so getting us three guys together would be easy. There are lot's of places to camp on our coast but the length of your rig would be difficult to get in certain areas off the beach.
The plan is to park the rig and do a six day ride. Initially we were going to do a few stops with the motorhome, but that would eat up riding time. We hope to meet up with you guys. I would love to ride with you and Monkey etc , and stop at RPM as well. Tomorrow we meet again figure out where we will park the bus and start riding. Then we can plan routes etc.
I'm also in the LA area, about 35 miles from mark aka FJmonkey. Keep me in mind for a group ride, if myschedule permits. Any excuse to go to the Rock Store is generally good with me!

I have an suggestion...... Drive the motorhome all the way to Victorville, CA.. Take I-15 south to Hwy 138, take that to Highway 2 and go through Wrightwood, it will take you right into Pasadena and FJmonkeys back yard.

FYI part of the 2 is closed for the season
Road Conditions for SR2 (http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/display.php?page=sr2). You can drive into Wrightwood and see the little town. Maybe stop at the Grizzly Cafe for a bite to eat. But you will need drive East back to the 138 and then the 15 South to the 210 to travel West. The ride up the 2 from the 210 side is a "Bucket List" ride for anyone. Newcomb's ranch is a motorcycle stop. On Sundays with good weather it looks like this.

We have decided that our itinerary is such. Leave the great white north Feb 12, in the evening. Drive non-stop to Flagstaff Arizona. If it is cold there, we keep on driving to Sedona. Drive around Sedona for a day, then head to California.
If Arizona is too cold, we keep driving to Bakersfield CA. We drive up and down the valley and go to Oakdale on the Wednesday. Hopefully this makes sense, as the fearless map reader on our team has come up with this plan.
We don't have a name for the tour yet. Nor do we have a sponsor. Maybe we call it the Arthritis Pain Tour 2016. Or the, Where Did I Leave My Glasses Tour?.
We will be easily identifiable on the road, as one of the FJ's will have a tank bag stacked so high that the rider will need a periscope to see over it. So if you see an FJ coming at you with a giant eye resembling Cyclops, it will be one of our favourite riders. Don't be afraid of him. He is really nice and if you scratch him behind his ears his one leg will start to shake uncontrollably. Also he may take a few dozen pictures of you.
The rv and trailer will look like a touring rock bands setup.
I'm thinking we need a sign or two,,,,wild fjs US tour /16
Ok now after reading that I am hyp'd up...how am going to sleep :dash2:....I am ecstatic to be headed to California with some old riding mates and a few new ones. Going to be my first excursion on my '88 FJ1200, my '85 Ninja 900R is not going to be happy. Can't wait to get out there and meet you guys and go for some good rides!!! the roads look fabulous. Hey fellow riders, good meeting the other night and we are going to make this happen!!!!
It is a half day ride to RMP for me and some of the other SoCal FJowners that may want to meet up at RPM. Randy has some really good roads, the last Renegade rally was proof of that. So keep us posted as you travel and a few of might help make it a real hoot....

Looking forward to it!!! ... the PCH? (#1?), the mountains?, Riding with fellow southern Fjers?....and.. WARMTH?? That equals a steady BIG ASS GRIN for a week! :yahoo:
The climatologists tell us we will have a wet winter/spring here on the west coast, so bring your rain gear.
Thanks for the weather heads up...I can't imagine the pile of snow we will be leaving behind. Whatever happens, we are pretty sure we will have the time of our lives. Thanks for your locations, we will put them all in our FJ Positioner Programmer , aka paper folding! map, and create a route plan. We do a lot of wandering and add a few loops in as well, there always seems to be something we want to see twice, :good2: at least that is my story. I think this will be the first time we have all eight riders on our Scala's....and as we know...that is going to be confusing!!!!! but heck you can't beat them for mid-course changes..good to have you sign up!!!! paulfj03, I won't be needing too many tools this ride now that I am ridin Yamaha but I will never surrender :flag_of_truce:
Climatologists are right about as often as politicians. And yes we will be leaving behind a mountain of snow. Rain will help wash the salt off the bus.
Well I guess we're going to have 3 1988 fjs then.
Yes, and one spectacular 1990.
And a sweet 92...
looking good Anvil99...can't say I have ever seen it that clean in all those thousands of KM.. nice dude. Looking to fatten up that rear tyre before the ride? I am going do the Gixxer mod and move into the modern rubber. Glad to have you along!! looking forward to it.
To all who have been following our plans for a winter break in southern California. :i_am_so_happy: So taking a few moments from our busy schedules, four of us gathered together for a few hours to check our plans this fine Sunday morning. We checked out the trailer and it looks great for intended purposes, a few mods to some tie down points, a couple plates manufactured to install wheel chocks, double check of all measurements...nobody wants to be left behind!!!! because we couldn't convert from french into imperial..... it looks all good!!... proposed schedule for leaving is Friday Feb 12th, after work. so about 4 or 5 or 6 pm...We hope to drive straight thru and only stop for the minimum amount required to fill with fuel and to get some provisions. We expect sometime early morning Sunday, Feb Fed 14th, to enter California and make our way to the Bakersfield area....we will be looking to set up shop, and use that as our base camp of sorts (loose term). We expect to be in the Oakdale area Wednesday afternoon, Fed 17th and link up with Randy at his shop/business Wednesday afternoon and pick up parts n stuff. Thursday we will looking to ride and perhaps a local ride could occur?? any body who is in and has some ideas are mor ethan welcome. we are looking to meet and greet with as many as riders as possible. We all like to talk as much as we do ride..right johnnie? eh wags? :yahoo:
Just a large shout out to our pal Gord R. for the offer of using his RV and trailer for the years adventure .. I like to think last year scary ride in my dodge and little trailer was a contributing factor. it was the :bomb: 'From a little hot air, comes great adventures..."
Awesome! I guess I need to put some new tires on. The last Renegade rally had some really good roads near the RPM shop. Randy and family did a great job hosting. For any that are in the neighborhood, Randy tends to allow parking in his shop for the night. The hotel is walking distance and when possible, Randy offers rides. Randy can also do your tires if you plan with him in advance. Same goes for all his other services. I hope my work allows me the time to meet up and ride with you guys...
Yes thanks Mark. Randy has offered the sop for overnight parking. We will take advantage of his kind offer. I already have a nice list of things I will be purchasing. Hopefully you are able to come along for a nice ride.
Been keeping one eye on your thread hoping I will be able to join the party...But gotta tell you again, on on daily basis we are being hammered with warnings of the heaviest rain fall for over a decade , especially in February(OK we been in drought for 5 years). We had similar "El Nino"conditions in 98. I though it would never stop. Everyone here has their El Nino stories. Maybe you've come to far to reschedule but you been warned. We Southern Californians are spoiled with great weather year round, (dont tell anyone), but this winter is expected to be very wet.
Hope to join you.
Mike
yikes...now that is not such good news. we have invested a bit of time planning, you know the beer and wings type planning... so no loss there :drinks:... some of us have bought wheel chocks.. again always a handy device and a potential trading item/can I borrow your wheel chock thingy , not a loss. Our buddy owns the RV and trailer and we may face a bit o cash there if any upgrades are required, at our "Trailer outfitting" meeting on Sunday it seemed to be a few things needed doing and some were willing to invest some time. so there may be a bit there. No rooms are booked but we don't normally do that anyways. We do have to book near Randy's place so we will have to look at something that we might be able to cancel.. Other than that.. we don't have a lot into it. All the bike prep would be the same as for the summer, our biggest cost is fuel.. no trip no cost... so other than the begging and screaming we did with our wives or our co workers to get the deal going....can you say priceless!!!!! we could pull out at the last minute.......and that my friends is not something I want to say :dash2: If I know the rest of the gang... we are loath to cancel....our Orleans bike experience last year was a blast!!! but we did learn we have ten degree 50 plus and rising tolerance...we drove several days which started out around 32 degrees and rose slowly, can you say..."thank fack for warm engine blocks and bare hands" we haven't tested our soaking wet temperature tolerance yet but we just may....
thanks for the heads up Mike!! keep us informed...if you can :good2:
Okay, I was able to get those days off work today, so I am good to go.
Who ever is in charge of rooms, have them email me and I will get them the hotel info for you guys.
I know the mountain passes will be closed due to winter, but that doesn't mean we can run the little dragon and the lower elevations for a day.

I will be in touch with Randy regarding rooms. We will not change plans unless California is being washed away. Original 81 is right. We have the time off for a bike trip. We have an RV. We have a trailer. So we will go. New Orleans etc. was cold last year and we did 2500 k and had a blast doing it.
I can't wait.
Looks amazing!!!
Can't wait
forgot to mention -- that is San Dimas Mike and Monkey Mark pictured
Got my good side.
21 more sleeps til the Magic Bus rolls through Detroit and down to California. We still plan to be in Oakdale on the Wednesday. We have booked a room there for two nights, so hopefully a bunch of guys can meet us at RPM Thursday for a nice ride hosted by Randy.
After we all purchased wheel chocks, a local car\ motorcycle Honda dealer decided to stop selling bikes. Because of this they had six e-track wheel chocks to sell at 50 bucks each, so our gracious host purchased them as well. As this trailer is set up for race cars it has three e-tracks on the floor and two on each wall. So we will have plenty of tie down points. Bikes will be secure.

Good deal, Ron. I would like to also extend this ride to anyone interested in joining. The weather is a big unknown but those guys will be here and hopefully we can get a dry ride in.
I have a basic ride thought out since the actual higher mountain roads are closed for the season due to snow.

Well, the weather looks to be acceptable. There is a 60% chance for rain on Wednesday the 18th, but only a 20% on Thursday.
I would like to get a solid head count so I can start working on dinner location for Thursday night.
Also, since the Canadians are the featured guest, what is the fare you would like to have.
We have a great American dinner place although kind of pricey, several Mexican options, a higher priced Italian place or a really good pizza place.
I also need a head count of those coming so I can properly plan for lunch on the Thursday ride. I know six Canadians and several others, but since the weather looks good I would like to get a solid count.
Let me know via email please. If all of the Canadians would also please email me so I can put out email to everyone at once.

We will be happy to eat wherever you prefer to eat. If the establishment has any local beers on tap all the better. Thanks again Randy for doing this. All the Canucks are getting stoked to go. The temp is dropping here to -16 on Saturday, so we will be happy to see Canada in our rear view mirrors.

I am going for a long afternoon ride here in Texas as it supposed to get to 71deg today. Thank you El Nino for keeping all the snow and cold weather up north and east. The west and southwest are having a wonderful winter. Dave
For all you heading down to Cali, have a great time and a safe journey. Make sure you have extra travel insurance on yourself, and double check with you're insurance company for the bike. OHIP will only cover certain things, and you could still get stuck with a hefty bill should something untoward happen. A few extra bucks could literally save your hide.
I'm sure you know also to tell your bank/credit card you'll be travelling. Otherwise the first time you use your card, it probably won't work. Just talking from experience. :dash2:
Now after all that downer shit, I am sooooo envious! :cray: And don't forget the SPF 30 sunscreen. Our lily white mid winter skin won't handle that California sunshine.
Hmmm.... What else.... Go to bed early, eat your peas, stay under the speed limit... And the typical conversation with the CHP is "Yes sir - no sir - absolutely sir - thank you sir". I think that's all the Canadianese they will understand.
Pics and vids please! :good2:

Hard to imagine that we are driving a 40,000 pound rolling living room with 5 TV's , three couches, shower , toilet, fridge , stove, washer, dryer, games system, convection oven, at 70mph down the highway. Oh with a trailer full of bikes. Four of the eight guys I met on the FJ forum. The owner of the motorhome and trailer had to cancel so let us take this rig across the country . Some days are better than others. This is a good one.

Enjoy the trip and ride well you crazy Canuks....and the odd Dutchman....hehehe..
Oh it was -37C here yesterday so you aint missing nuthin here.
Cheers...Jake
Those crazy Canucks rolled in about 6:30 last night. They, along with a few crazy Californians are hoping to get some riding in today, but the mother nature might have a different version.
The RPM shop here in Oakdale received 3/4" of rain last night and the locations for the ride are still getting rain at this hour.
We will have to see how it pays out.
Randy - RPM
If you run out of beer, just poke them with a stick to keep them in their place.
If that doesn't work, run awaaaaayyyyyyy...... :drinks:
RAIN TIME = MOD TIME ----
LETS do Valves --- woohooo

Weather will be better tomorrow --- the Little DraGON AWaits ...........
PS - any of those Canadians sporting one of those rare 1988 models....
Well, almost as fast as they arrived, they are gone...the crazy Canucks that is.
We got a decent ride in yesterday although the roads were mostly wet. Good count for a mid-week ride;12
We ate well and the poor guys are now ruined for riding anywhere else in the world after the California visit.
Guys, thanks for stopping by, it was great to meet each and everyone of you.
Randy - RPM
There is always that one ring in bike.
Glad a good time was had by all. would love to cross the pond one day for a ride with you all.
Mark
Home safe, my GPS said 5hrs 20 min from RPM to home, I did it in 4 hrs 30 min. not bad for 310 miles. I had a fantastic time meeting and putting faces to names. The roads were as fun as I remember, just a little wetter. Getting some work done on the bike with Robert and a few goodies from Randy's shelves was also treat. And I saved the shipping cost . Start making plans for the Renegade rally.
Where are the Ontararrroios ( people from Ontario Canada ) ---- off to. Surely they did not leave without doing PCH from Monterey to Obisbo
sc2
Yeah, where's their next stop?
And FJ Monkey, what's the Renegade Ride?
Was most excellent to meet the six Ontarionians (???) and what a great couple of days of riding! Old friends in the group of twelve, new friends from Canada (is everyone from Canada awesome?), most excellent hospitality on Randy and Robert's part as per usual. :good2:
I had an easy, twisty ride home up the 49 with the sun shining most of the way. What a great two-day trip.

Yeah, where's their next stop?
And FJ Monkey, what's the Renegade Ride?
The Renegade rally was started some years ago by a few central CA FJowners in your nick O' the woods that felt one rally a year was not enough. So the Renegades that they are, held their own mini-rally. Not every year, but a small central CA rally is always fun. Last year was mid-September, Randy at RPM hosted the RR, it was really nice. We rode the great rides near RPM and ate as one group in his shop with roasted pig and way too much food to finish. Plenty of pics if you search for Renegade Rally.
Sorry for the lack updates. :pardon: Time flies when we're having fun.... and i ve been meaning to post up, but ... having just too much fun! :flag_of_truce:
Its been an awesome ride ! Lots of miles covered, dipped the toes into the pacific, unbelievable rides through the mountains, beautiful weather, a great ride on the Little Dragon, an excellent visit with resident riders and Randy and Robert at RPM. A superb bunch of fellas! A great big thanks to Randy and Robert for sorting out my 88. Yep, those RPM valves and springs are SMOOTH.... love 'em. The vibranators work great too.... ... im slowly getting spoiled with the upgrades :yahoo:
A couple pics:
Im sure there will be more to come...
Paul, you would have been happy with old sacked out original forks. The crap that Robert and Randy found on your forks was astounding bad. Astounding enough that I am surprised you did not fly fly off in a corner, only to be found later when the buzzards started circling above your position. I am guessing you are pleased with you new set set up?
All good now...
We have to ride again and share a beer sometime, eh.
We are now loaded up and on the road. Goodbye California. :cray:
Until next time...

Most excellent meeting and riding with you guys! Safe travels home gentlemen! :drinks:

Seriously jealous right now. We've had rain the past few weeks, so I haven't been able to get out like I wanted to.
At some point I am hoping some of the other knuckleheads post up about our California trip.

I am not a knucklehead... that would imply I knew what a knucklehead even is.. never mind a pan head. Thanks Johnnie for the kick in the butt :hi:
It is Paul here, the tall one... sorry Wags... I would like to thank all those who came out to greet us on Wed/Thursday in Oakland... It was completely fantastic to meet with you fellows in mid-California...It is crazy to think we live so far apart and yet share such common interests. Randy/Robert thanks for making us feel at home in your shop and helping grab some parts and products to make our rides better. Truth be told, if the shop was 300 miles away we would be there all the time being annoy as hell.
Thanks for taking time from your busy days and setting up a ride with us. In the 2500 km of roads we rode in 5 days, yours were some of the finest pavement and views we had. For all those who think they can't take their rides far and wide.. it isn't true... plan, execute and enjo, the new friendships and experiences that are available to all.
what can a person say??? We will be back!!!!!!

One of the roads we rode was Old Stage Road coming down out of the mountains. Sure enough we came upon a one horse town called Fountain Springs. It wasnt even big enough to be called a hamlet (?). There was this mexican restaurant at the 4 corners. It seemed to be in the middle of nowhere...
This was on the Tuesday, if I recall correctly.
It was a hoot! We sat outside on the patio on another warm day (mid 20sC or mid 80sF), had great food and some good laughs.
Out front there was a genuine tumbleweed.

Kinda' looks like that bar in the movie From Dusk 'til Dawn.... what kind of meat was in those tacos?
By the looks of the place they had Tumbleweed Tacos. :bad:
Not sure what kind of weed they used but they sure were good tacos.
I guess it's time for bully 1 and bully 2 to start throwing their weight around and get the others to do a trip report. I am sure there were some things we did that were interesting. Or fun.
Oh and as an aside, Pat. I , when nobody was looking, hid a fingerprint somewhere on your bike. I wonder if you will ever find it. And if you don't, will you sleep?
All joking aside , very nice bike.

C'mon guys. It's not like you were riding through Area 51. Open up with the pics.
While I have been stuck up here in B#m F#ck, Ontario, you must having been having the time of your life.
Years ago I spent Christmas in the arroyos north east of LA, so I have an idea of what's to discover, but I had no bike, dammit. (Almost collected a Triumph Speed Triple on the grill of the Caddy coming around those blind hairpins, but that's another story.)

Well, we were out on a Thursday, so there was only local traffic.
I am using the
GARMIN VIRB XE ACTION CAMERA (https://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Garmin%3A010-01363-11).
The camera is mounted on the lower section of the windshield.

I am not sure who the artists are, I just select the music that matches the video length. 99% of the music just seems to fit.

Steve, I am still trying to figure out all of the options of the camera. I thought I figured out how to use the camera while being hooked up to the USB port and not have to worry about turning it off when I stop to not kill the battery. But, it was discovered when you do that, the interface connection the the GPS and the mapping feature is lost.

I have my GoPro mounted in the same place. I tried a lot of different positions originally so the camera was easily accessible but the footage was all wobbly from the vibration. Mounted just above the headlight is the best spot but makes it hard to reach when riding, you must have long arms Randy.
I did notice on some footage that the camera looks like it's moving around, how secure are the mounts on the Garmins.

Actually, I activate the camera through the GPS unit, except for the times I started it before flight.
The mount is very secure and has zero movement.
