Title: 1174 overhaul
Post by: theLeopard on January 03, 2015, 02:47:53 PM
I need to overhaul my scooter. It's time.

Can you guys pitch in to help me create a knockout list?

Heres what i have so far:
Piston rings&seals
Calibrate the cams
Compression test, &/or leakdown
Tighten chain sitting betwixt the 2&3 cams (whatsitcalled)
Front-fork seals
Clutch plates
Shift fork
Brake pads
Jets
Flapper valve
Cosmetics

I need to crack the motor open, thats what i really need help with. Blind in that department.
I know a guy who can help but he runs his own shop and his time is expensive.
I also need a garage.

If anyone wants to volunteer for this I'd limp it to yiur house once i get the parts squared. Knocking bad. Is my first rebuild :embarrassed:

Why?
The scooter runs, just needs an overhaul.

Ok i took my scooter to the doctor today and received a clean bill of health.
Engine runs "smooth as silk".
Chain is loose, so he showed me how to tighten the chain.
Already set for another oil change and basic maintenance.

So mebe you guys chip in some 30k tuneup ideas?
:music: it aint what it was anymore, george. Hopefully  :morning1:

Change your fuel filter, it is under the fuel tank. use the real Yamaha filter.
then ride it and see if you can go 100mph now.

I quartermiled a Mazerati. Lost on the freeway cause i havent jetted yet.

That was awhile ago, but i have a serious knock in my motor.

Its still there but he said the chain might be slapping on the guard.
2inches of play. He rode it around abit, we revved it up inthe parking lot, some sustained 4&6k revs and a push to 8.

Is why i was shocked when tokd it was kaput, i rode 200 miles a couple weeks ago to LA.

Needs a tuneup badly though, thats why Im making this list.
I'll put fuel & oil filter on the list, Mark.
Might be a good time to replace my brake lines, Pat. I'll add that too.

1. Do you know what a "connecting rod" is Leopard?
2. Deal with your chain before you worry about any brake upgrades. If it is that loose both it and the sprockets may need to be replaced - have Mr. Motorcycle check that for you.
3. I repeat my earlier advice: buy a manual and read the maintenance chapter.
4. Take a motorcycle safety course.

This is the second time you were eager to rebuild your motor. The first time was based on results of a closed-throttle compression test; now based on a slapping drive chain.

I also recall you dumping all of you engine oil when you left the drain plug loose. Now you are street racing and you do not even know how to check for proper chain tension.

I suspect that if you ever get the head off that engine it will never run again.  Which would be for the best. I think you are a danger to your self and others.
Title: Re: 1174 overhaul
Post by: theLeopard on January 06, 2015, 06:14:06 PM
1. I googled it. If it's loose I'll need to rebuild the motor yeah?
2. Brake line replacement isnt a budgetable safety upgrade, currently. I wish it was.
3. I have an OEM manual. The pictures arent legible which is difficult for a novice.
4. Id prefer to take an advanced maneuvering course.

A shame you feel that way, Burns. I forgot ti tie my shies once, now i need velcro?
Lets do eachother a favor and ride opposite directions. I'd probably wind up in a wreck trying to keep up with your technical brilliance.

Worst i do is playful drags ib the city and occasionally split lanes too quickly.

Don't worry about your critics. Worry about your LIFE.

You don't have anything to prove but you have a lot to learn.  Get a manual, read the maintenance chapters, follow the schedules. Get in the routine of checking tightness of critical fasteners (axles, triple trees, etc), tires (for pressure and condition), wheels (run true and smooth - i.e. no bends or kinks and good bearings) fluid levels, cables/controls, and CHAIN TENSION/CONDITION.

Always remember that riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous - treat your motorcycle with respect.

The city streets are not race tracks and you have no right to endanger the folks who are on them.

Whats a PVHO? I looked at an industrial commercial diving compressor for class a few times. That was right about the time i got kicked out woth a 4.0gpa. Those rat bastards didnt even let me complete the welding course.

Burns, i will listen to damn near any advice you have to offer but 1) im an idiot and 2) you cant convince me to stop riding so bear that in mind while you whoop my ass woth knowledge.

Also, it's the chain. Or possibly rattling pipes. Does anyone want to sell me a non-op motor i can tinker with?

Hey Leopard cub ,

You should be checking your gears and chain adjustment right now . You said the mc dude showed you how . so go do it and post a pic of what it looks like.
Don't you want to know if that is the noise you are hearing. If you let it go and keep riding it can lock up the rear wheel and cause you to crash.

There are lots of video's on you tube on how to adj a motorcycle chain . You also have your repair manual.

If you do this now it will build some credibility for you before you get shunned .

You already stated you are an Idiot , so do something smart.

"What is a PVHO?......ummmmmm.....Not sure if you asked a question here. (You posted the following on June 13th......"School is going well too, although I got pretty hot when some guy snitched and signed my SOP for PVHO class today which pissed me off but then he was acting like a little kid which made me mad.")

....I had to google PVHO and so you contributed to my education...thanks

I have no idea what you mean by a "woth a 4.0gpa", but what`s interesting is that the Commercial Diving class you mentioned on June 13th turned out to be "rat bastards that didn`t even let me complete the welding course"....which I gather was part of the Commercial diving course you stated you were doing back then.

(As a duty of care I was hoping you didn`t take on Commercial diving Services!...let alone touch one of their compressors!)

....Do you see a recurring theme here? Lot`s of rat bastards around ya?  Is it always THEM, quote, "acting like a little kid and making me mad".

The good news here is that you`ve stumbled upon a lot of true rat bastards here that actually understand, and with some maturity we really believe that your a cock.....but that`s not so bad, I gotta tell ya I`m really enjoying your threads and hope we can help you.

Suggest you:-

1. Don`t start so many threads for the same subject, ("New motor" or "1174 overhaul" as an example...not both or even more)

2. Listen and act singularly (one prob at a time!) and report back on the results so we can enjoy further and lay the steps to FJ heaven & supportive Comraderie..(Your memory is obviously not good enough to ask and solve more than one thing at a time anyhow.)

3. Mate, you gotta make it to a Rally.... you`ll feel so at home and I for one would luv to sit around the campfire with you, seriously.

You`ve got character.  I`m sincerely hoping you`re man enough to take on all three suggestions. :drinks:

Do you really think we're all PURPOSLEY STEERING YOU WRONG?  We are trying to tell you that you are making a LOT of work and forcing considerable expense for probably no good reason.

Now, if you want to get some engine rebuilding experience, this is a good exercise.  But if you're a "Starving Student" as you have claimed, this is a STUPID EXERCISE!  We don't encourage or generally tolerate "STUPID" here.  So, are you going to be smart and listen?  Or continue to act stupid???

Anyone know what that mount is for?
Its been unused for quite some time.

So i figured out why my shiftlever is loose....
That mount is completely gone, missing, stripped, bought the farm.
Its on the frame, so working on a temp solution until such time i replace the frame.

Clutch plates are worn. Might explain my 2nd gear slippage. Very serviceable.

Oil & filer change, chain tension & lube, replaced some very old gaskets, lots of degreasing. Successful day, one handed i might add!

Brake change, dot4 flush, then onto serious replacements like manifolds, clutch plates, and I'm wanting to wrap my exhaust headers in high-temp tape. Any suggestions?

Post by: FJmonkey on January 27, 2015, 08:47:29 PM
The unused mount is not clear what part you are referring to so no response on that question.

The broken shift lever nut is not new, others have solved this problem a few different ways. Riv-Nuts (cinch-nuts) can fix the issue as well as welding in a new nut like the OEM did it the first time. Riv-nuts can be done with the lower frame rail installed, the other requires removal of the lower rail. Not too much work either way.

Your clutch steels seem a bit blued, got a bit hot. How do the the others look? But are they still flat? Blue is not a total failure, warped needs to be replaced.

Otherwise it looks like you are making progress...

How is your finger healing, well I hope...

Empty mount, has been visibly empty for quite some time.
The black one near the splined peg.

My buddy, Joe, is working on a fix. If he gets stumped I'll bring up RivNuts. Is that a brand?

Yeah, theyre blued but serviceable. Actually only the first two plates show any blueing which is likely cause i ride the clutch in first gear, sometimes second. Habit. A few of the friction-plates exhibit non-uniform wear, and are near the wear limit anyway. Will probably just replace the set, if it isn't terribly expensive.

Finger is healing well; slowly, but i kept infection out. Maybe a centimetre of new growth.  :drinks: whens the next gathering? I could spring some beer whenever your shed opens up.

Bottom-right corner, 1st photo.
Empty mount, has been visibly empty for quite some time.

I can't believe nobody else commented on this part but I am wondering if your second gear "slippage" is just that or the "Yamaha tranny". I have not looked at your thread in a few days so don't remember if you already stated the condition of your trans but I'm hoping it's safe to assume you are familiar with this common issue considering your enthusiasm in the bike so I'm prob just wasting keystrokes here.  Keep up the work.

I brought that up but was thoroughly rebuked as the notorious "2nd gear slip" was remedied on the '92.
Only occurs on 80's models iirc, but in any event it isnt my shifter-forks.

Until I pop that sucker open and see it is anyway  :gamer:

Ok so this overhaul is kinda turning into maintenance but anyway heres whats on the books for next week:

Full brakepad replacement
Flush & bleed clutch & brakelines
Oil & filter change
Fuel filter

Heres what yall missed:
Replaced my front after balding. 100miles or one sharp rock  :morning1:
Replaced a slew of gaskets
Got my detailing business up&running
Applied to the Union
Drinks  :drinks:
Oh, and the finger is healing (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/capnfrank/Mobile%20Uploads/KIMG0037_zps7zrmdr9i.jpg)

Need to check the valves & whatnot.
If anyone is having a bbq workshop I'd like it if someone more experienced could give'r a listen. Chugs more than purrs now. Runs great!

All sounds like a plan. Just one question. Why are you drinking that Fosters Crap? You do know that it is only exported because no self respecting Aussie would touch the stuff with a 10 foot pole. (Probably the same as Millers over there) Try a Corona or a Heiniken it tastes better. :drinks:

glad the finger is healing and the bike is on the mend too.

Great to hear of your progress and esp your new business operations.
Excuse my ignorance but what does "applied to the Union" entail/mean?

You`ve reduced the "to do" list by about 75% in 3 months.....wish I could do that!   :drinks:

Thanks for getting me back on the road, Mark.
Woulda been in a creek with a paddle otherwise.

Fosters aint too bad for a $2 pint. I like killians & scotch but my budget wont allow it.

Old grommets smelt pretty burnt. Oil black @1500.
Tackled the fuel filter also.
