Hey there,
I am collecting all the parts required for modifying my 1985 FJ1100, with a 1992 FJ1200 forks + 1988 FZR 1000 front RIM. It looks like I can use wheel parts from my FJ1100 wheel on the FZR wheel (i.e. oil seals, spacers, speedo hub, etc.  The only part that doesn't match between my FJ1100 and the FJ1200 forks is the axel; part number: 85 - 36Y-25181-00-00 and 92 - 18G-25381-00-00.

Do I need to order a 1992 FJ1200 axel or the front axel is interchangeable between FJ1100 and 1200?

Thanks,
Eyal

No they are not interchangeable, I believe this is the axle you require. I order on for someone that requested it and since it seemed to be a mod that others would be doing I got another for stock. I think I got it for Monkey when he was changing over to his FZR wheel.

Nope, the early model had both fork lowers with a smooth bore and the shaft went all the way through and uses a nut for retention.

The later model fork lowers have a raised & threaded boss for the axle to screw into.

Would it be possible to drill out the thread on the later model fork lower and use the old style axle?
I've heard of a few people that have stripped the aluminum axle threads in the fork.

There's another axle out there, a Yamaha part, that doesn't have the cotter key holes. My LGS (now defunct, so I can't get the PN from them) used it when they helicoiled the axle threads in the fork lower. We suspected that those holes act as a tap to cut a little more meat off the threads every time it's removed/reinstalled. Maybe it was for the FZRs, I don't know....  Just looked at the 'fiche and the picture doesn't have the resolution to see.
I suspect it is the '87/'88 FZR axle...

FZR = 25181   FJ = 25381  in the main body of the PN.
