I bought of used risers from user fj111200(thanks)
http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo/814668/Bars-And-Footrests/Universal-Handlebar-Risers/Raask/25mm-Hole-Depth
Now am curious on opinions onwhich handlebars to buy(which rise etc) without having to buy new brake lines etc?

I used the oem 2002 FZ-1 bars, aprox.29" wide from end to end. I did not have to change my throttle, choke or hydraulic lines.

The ends of the FZ-1 bars are threaded so as to use the FJ oem bar end weights or the superior Vibranator bar ends.

You need to measure the distance (outside to outside) between your clamps to see if the center (flat) part of the FZ-1 bar (or any bar) will fit between the clamps.

Looking at the picture of your clamps and visualizing where they would be in relation to the stanchion tubes, I think you will be hard pressed to find a bar wide enough to have the flat portion fit between the clamps, and yet narrow enough on the overall width where you can use the oem cables and brake/clutch lines.

So...All is not lost...If you need longer cables Motion Pro will make a set for you, and Spiegler will make up a set of custom lines the length you need.

Hope this helps.  Pat

Jeez Pat,

Your bike is such a work of art, could you soon provide us with a current pictorial? That would be sweet!!!

Thanks Craig, I pulled those (over 3 year old) pictures from the FJ Bike Gallery.
Scroll down: http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?action=gallery;cat=1;sortby=date;orderby=desc;start=840

I have made many changes to my '84 since then, like, I since installed a set of Spiegler fat bars, (superbike low model)
http://spieglerusa.com/controls/fatbar-bike-kits/fatbar-handlebars.html
...and those bars needed longer throttle cables (+2") and Motion Pro made them up for me.. called them up, they already had the FJ cable specifications on file, requested FJ cables with 2" added to the length, gave them my cc info and one week later I had them installed.....painless. Cost me $60 for both cables.

I'm currently out of town and my bike is up at RPM for a (ahem) minor tune up, so updated pictures will have to wait.

Not sure i hundred percent follow. So theres a square section in the middle part of the handlebars?

Sorry, poor choice of words, my bad...
.No, not square...not flat...but straight ..in the middle....where the clamps meet the bar, then the bar ends bend up and to the outside, then straightens out where the handgrips go..

The straight area in the center of the bar is where the clamps meet the bar. On some  bars the middle straight area will be too narrow to fit with your clamps.

By just eyeballing it...your clamps look to be rather wide apart.
Measure this distance and verify before you buy your bar...

Ah cool thats what i thoght you meant. So i take it you cant just buy any handle bars, they need to fit those oem vibrinators then? My friend put mx style handlebars on his vstrom i was wishfully thinking i could do something similair-lol

The FZ-1 bar just happened to have threaded ends...so I could use the Vibranators, a happy coincidence.

Go ahead and get the bar you want*** don't worry about the bar having threaded bar ends.
Vibranator makes models which will fit in any bar type you decide to use.

***Just make sure the bar's middle straight area will fit between your wide spaced clamps.
Don't worry about needing longer cables, it's a easy fix.

You might check out late model FZ1 bars.  They are pretty straight through the middle.  They do not have much rise.

Go to Parts Zilla and look them up.

Thanks Jeff, it's not really that hard to keep up with the shine....unless you happen to live at the beach.

After measuring the clamp area would be 165 mm. I am guessing one of these would work?

The obvious part is that you do not just like your 84...you love it! :blum1:  I appreciate all the effort and time it takes to get anything to the "show bike" level.  Can't wait until I get to take the Retirement 101 course....(a few more years), then maybe time for polishing!

My crystal ball sez something about a new exhaust system... And maybe a little tinkering with the suspension.
