Side and main stand issues ....

OK - That sounds a silly topic, but I can't suss out how to use the stands on the FJ (1991 3XW)

Let me explain - the bike was bought as a combination outfit, so obviously didn't need a stand - when I got it, I was given a bag of bits that where removed when it was converted.

I've now temporarily split the outfit, so I've got a solo again :)  However I have the sidestand and spring, but can't see how the spring mounts to the bike - the original bolt appears to be missing, would it have hooked on there?

No problem I thought, the centre stand is still present, I can use that.....  Can I get the bike up onto it, not a cat in hells - is there a technique special to this bike of hoisting it onto the main stand or have I got something else wrong ?

,, The side stand has a oval shape mounting point for the spring to clip onto that goes behind the actual bolt that holds the stand on, like a washer with an extra bit  :scratch_one-s_head:,, unless the center stand is wired up zip tied or? ? Usual technique is place all your weight on the pedal / foot standy on thing  :biggrin: and heave the beasty with an up and back motion,, easier than it sounds,,I know a moron that used to actually lift the bike as much as he could, and then try and push the stand down to get the bike to sit on it  :lol:,, let him do this for months on the cb900 bol,dor,  one day I said can I have a turn,I weighed 55kg at the time and had no probs getting my 250 on the c stand,he laughed and said there's no way in hell if he couldn't do it without breaking a sweat I had no chance,, walked up to the ol bike,  lifted her off the side stand,  stood on the c st and gently rocked he back in one easy movement  :mocking:, turned around and he'd gone inside muttering something about me being a smart arse little prick  :lol:,, he never used the center stand again, even lubed the chain by rolling the bike,  spray lube, roll some more  :shok:

Sussed out that the bike is a heavier lump than I was expecting  - managed to heave it onto the main stand.  It looks a lot smaller than my 'big one' (CB1000), but needs a lot more hoisting onto the stand.

Thanks for the sidestand info, the bolt and washer thing are missing - so another bit for the shopping list.

Ill have a look,  may have the bolt and spring mount, if you can't find one locally

Ok,if you have no luck finding the spring mount, I have at least two of them, probably the washer also and if I looked again most likely the bolt and lock tab washer too

Hey Reggit did that outfit have leading link forks by any chance? Expensive to ship I know but I`ve always got an eye out for a set..
`93 with downside up forks.
`78 XS11/1200 with a bit on the side.

Lol I wont lie the first time I went to use the center stand I was like man got to lift a 500 pound bike but I looked at it a little closer and was like I know this is easier. The problem I do have is when she is in the garage and the slick floor makes my life more difficult.

Once you get the technique it's a lot easier. I've been lifting bikes for decades but my back doesn't like it anymore.

I made this a few years back, just run the wheel onto it (it has a stop) and then it just about falls back onto the stand itself. I can even do it in bare feet.
With the handle I don't even have to bend over to move it.
It's made so it bites the concrete when the wheel hits it. The first model shot out from the wheel.

Nifty little gadget noel, that could save a lot of backs  :good2:,, I noticed the day I fiitted the f4i shock that effie pretty much fell onto the center stand, due to the rear wheel now almost touching the deck,  guess if someone was keen they could raise the stand mounts   :scratch_one-s_head:..

Not sure I get the issue / problem with putting the bike on the centre stand. My '92 no longer has a centre stand thanks to the FZR swingarm mod but I sure do miss it. I had it on my '86 and never had a problem getting the bike up on the centre stand - and I'm not a big guy (just ask my wife). It's all about technique. If you find the stand is sliding along the concrete when you're trying to get the bike up on the stand, then you are doing something wrong. And unless you're back is already out of whack, it should not strain that either. I did a quick search on Youtube and found this how-to video:

The only thing that I do differently is I don't grab the front brake when setting the bike up on the centre stand feet and when I take the bike off the center stand I then have both hands on the handlebars and simply walk the bike forward, covering the front brake lever.

I don't  get it either - not matter how much I try, I can't get this bike up onto it's stand.  My others are no issue, and my CB is a physically bigger bike and that's no hassle to lift up.

 :flag_of_truce:  This is obvious to most on here, but make sure you are using the side lifting point and not the rear grab handles to put it on the center stand. I didn't realize there was a side point until I had the seat off and could see it. Using the rear grab handle to raise it really sucks......
