K & N oil filters

Im Getting ready to fit Randy's spin on and was looking at filter options in the UK.  Now I should admit I am doing this to benefit from the function aspect at the expense of looks!

As I'm not a huge fan of its 'look' I am keen to track down the shortest filter I can.

I have been looking at the K & Ns as they have a proven track record of performance and have a wide range of specification and The KN-303 is listed as compatible.  Furthermore they are readily available in the UK.  I came across a thread on the XJR forum that discussed K & N filters at length and how they seal quite close to the channels on the spin on.  From what I read  I understand the channels on the spin on have since been moved in a fraction to compensate?

So onto my wonderings!!

Keen to avoid purchasing a variant that is not compatible I have come across some suitable additional choices to the short length 303, the KN-191.  This filter is almost identical in size and spec, it's just a bit wider at 71mm compared to the KN-303 at 68mm.  The 191 is used on the Triumph Daytona 600 amongst a number of other triumphs.
Now there is a third option, KN-204 this is nice and short, however this is a millimetre or two narrower than the 303 so for now I'm going to exclude this as a possibility as the 303 was already on the limit of compatibility.

The issue I have is that it is impossible to find out the diameter of the rubber gaskets. This would be the most ideal reference point to check compatibility for this purpose but it isn't listed anywhere.
All the measurements relate to outside diameters and not the diameter of the gasket.  Logic would dictate that the larger the outside diameter the larger the gasket diameter, however as I have learnt (to my own great expense in life) this is not always the case!!!! Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups as they say!

I have contacted K & N in the UK and they were totally useless.  They would not check, take measurements and get back to me or anything else for that matter.  They would only tell me which filter I needed by giving them the make and model of my car!

My next option is to check with a mail order supplier who is based near me!

Does anyone on here know the diameter of the KN-303 gasket seal (a known reference point as many have used it without issue) or the KN-191 (my preferred choice) or finally the KN-204.
Alternatively if anyone knows somewhere I can source this info for myself then please point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any and/or help.

Well, since I have to date sold 88 K&N 303's and I have never been notified about a single one of them leaking.

The gasket of the filter is slightly deceiving when looking through the adapter. I looks like the gasket is actually contacting the holes,. but the actual inner sealing portion of the gasket just contacts the champhered edge of the hole.

I did move the holes in slightly to address the "concern" about the gasket sealing at the edge of the holes, but it was only done to address the concern not an issue.

I have ordered a 191 on my stock order today and I will be able to tell you if the gasket is large in diameter.

Once I determine that I will advise, but unless 88 people just don't want to tell me the 303 leaks, I do not expect you to have any problem.

I wasn't in any doubt or questioning you Randy as your list recommends it and as far as I'm concerned your word is gospel, so for me the 303 is on the 'to be considered list'

I was just keen to explore all the options to find something that was as short as I could possibly get away with without compromising the width.  I read between the lines as far as 'the concern' went.  I know if there was an issue it would be well documented on the forums;-)

The specs list the 303 as 85mm long, while the 191 is 76mm, so if you can confirm a gasket measurement of both I would be very interested to know what you find out!  In the mean while I will check around the local suppliers! I will let you know what I find!

Thanks Randy

I understand your concerns about the filter gasket to sealing,  but I've been using a ryco 411 filter that just sits on the edge of the spin on adapter, much like the k&n randy mentions,  not since fitting 12mths ago has it looked like leaking,, I would of bought a k&n 202 or small size ect but can't warrant the price they want for them down here
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

I use the K&N202 price is steep but not toooo bad I buy then 4 or 5 at a time.
I have kleptomania,
but when it gets bad,
I take something for it.

Dave, If you cross reference the WIX filter that comes with the spin on adapter it is a Z79A (Ryco) which every Australian knows you can just about buy at Safeway.
The Repco equivalent is black and costs under $15.

Quick update the kn-191 is one of the shortest options.  As of 3pm I can confirm that the 191 has a seal diameter of 60mm.  The 303 has a diameter which is just a fraction under the 60mm.  Therefore if the 303 works fine then the 191 will do too.

Hope this helps someone!

"I use the K&N202 price is steep" What's this then? The only place they'd be any cheaper would be off the back of a truck, or maybe Aldi's.
