For carb synchronization, My Motion Pro tool says to use the non-adj. carb to synch tool before balancing carbs. Did not find anything in the manual in the carb section. It also says this is usually the carb the throttle cables are attached to.  So I am guessing #3?   [84-1100]

I think they might be referring to some of the newer bike's with throttle body's. I have seen this done on You Tube I think with Suzuki's. Not a player with the FJ.
Balance 1 to 2 then 3 to 4 and then 1 to 3. Left two, right two then the banks together.

They would be referring to the fj,s #2 carb as that's the one that's not adjustable,  and the one you synch to
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

OK, will try the #2 to balance to as I can balance all 4 together.     Wonder if the 1-2 and 3-4, then 1-3 method is more accurate or the same.  In my way of thinking, it would seem if the #2 carb is the non-adj.carb, the two at a time sequence would be 1-2, 3-2, 4-2.  With the 1-2, 3-4, then 1-3 the #4 looks like it could end up being off.

i got the balancer with 4 columns, if you can adjust all 4 at the same time, do that.

Also i heard somewhere set the balance at above idle speed rather than at idle. If I could i'd do the balance at cruise speed and cruise loading

That's starting to look like the lotto results.

Keep it simple, you are balancing the carbs with each other not to some benchmark.
There are 3 screws.
The left side screw balances the two LH carbs with each other. The right side screw balances the two RH carbs with each other. The screw in the middle then balances the two LH with the two RH carbs.

Balance 1&2 with each other, then 3&4 with each other then balance the two pairs with each other using the screw in the middle.

Forget about the MotionPro instructions unless, as you wording suggests, they are talking about calibrating the tool to the motor.

I just balance my banks as per the service manual. I do raise the idle RPM up a little to insure all the slack is out of the cables. After adjusting I rev the rpm's up to 3000 rpm hold there for a few seconds letting it stabilize to see how she balances at that point. When I am happy then move on to the next two carb's. Then balance the banks together. After that I adjust the fuel air screws and re-balance to check everything.
Everyone probably has there own drill but the basics don't change.

I use a different tool so as mentioned above perhaps there is a calibration point for the tool to put the indicators in visual range.

Thanx Ribbert, that now clears it up for me.
