Engine Mounts

Finally did what everybody else is doing, greasing the front engine mounts. wasn't too sure what to do at first, but after a bit of banging and clanging, noticed the inner sleeve starting to poke it's head out, so after a bit of gentle / rough persuading I finally got them out.

Cleaned up with a piece of wet & dry sandpaper showed a bit of pitting, but after giving the bush and sleeve a good going over with sandpaper tried it again and they slid in and out like a beauty.

Was going to put grease nipples in, but there's no way a normal drill will fit in there with the engine in situ, so just packed them with grease, and put it back together.

Have to say, didn't notice a big difference until about 3500 rpm, then it smoothed out to red line. got home and checked the frame bolts under the footrest hangers only to find one of them broken.

Drilled it out, tapped a new thread, new bolt, but haven't tried it out yet to see if it's any better.

Way to go, not that hard to do and makes a huge difference. Doing this once a season will be more than enough and does not take long.

I used a Dremel with a 90 degree head on it and modified a drill bit by turning down the shank to fit the Dremel and shortened it to under an inch put a new cutting face on it and all good.

Took longer to make the mods to the drill bit than it dit to do the nipples.




It's the little one above the spark plug (which gives a size reference)

I was looking at my bike the other day and having trouble locating the fittings do you have any pictures showing where they are? The bike was pretty dirty so it may be hidden from oil and dirt and thats why I dont see them. Thanks

You have a '84. You don't have this paticular style of engine mounts. This maintenance applies to the rubber mounts on the '91-'93+ FJ's
It's all documented in the Files section.
Therefore, don't worry about it...
