New Q2

To prevent wearing out a half used tire at the up coming WCR, (like I did in Colorado last year), I mounted and balanced a new rear tire.
On the suggestions of Mark and Frank, I went with a 170/60/17, as the Dunlop run wider in the 180 size compared to most other tire brands, and I wanted to stay with the Q2 for now. This will solve the tire/chain clearance problem I have been having.







After a short 15 mile break-in ride, I can see that more lean angle will be required to wear this in before hitting the twisties in Cali.
I wiped the tire down with lacquer thinner prior to the first ride to help remove the mold release compound.


I'll have to go over the polished aluminium before I stand inspection from Pat!

Looks familiar...  except for those chicken strips are impressive!  How did your last one wear?  Mine was perfectly even until the dyno and new found Kook killed it.

Leon, is your stand fitted to the bike? If so, what did you do? I had to leave mine off and just put it on for service work.

Also, my exhausts appear to be as high as yours but I find they hit the road about the same time as the pegs.

They look worse than this now although I try and avoid it.

Noel, I have retained the center stand on the bike.
No mods were made to fit.
My last 180 rear had "zero" chicken strips left and the pipes never made contact with the road surface.
Seems odd?
Maybe yours are mounted more outboard than mine?

I preemptively replaced the last tire before it got very bad, but the one I had on last  year was an old Dunlop D208 and has "zero" chicken strips, but wore through the center enough to call it a day and head back home.

The fact that the old 208 cornered so well has given me high hopes for the Q2 on the rear.
I was actually surprised to see the 208 worn to the very edge because at no time did it ever give me any signs of NOT sticking.

I really love the stability of these tires.  Maybe one day I can get to zero chicken strips as well, but what you see here is usually about 2x where it ends up (as you can see in the "worn out" photo.  My balls shrivel long before my bike drags I fear...

Leon you have shorter dog bones, raising the back of the bike and giving more clearance to the ground. Maybe this is the difference? Hope this helps.

I wish I had been able to wear in more of the tire than I did, but I just don't have enough curves around here to stay in a substained leaned over attitude to really get that aggressive with.
That's why I love going to rallies, a guy can put his machine to work and have a ball doing it!

Frank nice looking tail!  You seem from your pics to have a single side pipe and retained your centre stand? Is that right if so, what make is your exhaust system?

Also is your 'hugger' the gsxr variant?

...if so, what make is your exhaust system?  [Flynt -  Akrapovik XJR1300 race exhaust.  RPM's new exhaust will be very similar with same functionality.]

Also is your 'hugger' the gsxr variant?  [Flynt -  It is the Yoyodyne hugger for the Thunderace (that's the rear end I have)]

Thought you might comment on me checking out your behind!! Don't panic! I look at everyone's rear end set up! But don't worry it's nothin to do with any sort of 'lifestyle choice'

Will check out the xjr exhaust, any model year in particular to look for? Am worried that getting the RPM exhaust in the uk may incur addition costs in taxes when it arrives (I'm thinking the same with the rear shock!)

Leon, just head to my place a couple days early............I'll at least have the three-day weekend off(gotta love those government holidays)
we can spend a day or two riding around the front range before you head out to Cali to play with the big boys..............Your tire will be plenty scrubbed in.
We can even attempt to try out my new(to me) wood-fired smoker with some BBQ, and beers

How you finding the q2 tyre/s, I picked up a set that a mate used for 6 laps on a track day, very little wear,  just a small amount of gummed rubber on the edges,  didn't like them on the 600 honda he had ,,
