Leaky petcock

My 37k mile fj has a petcock that won't hold fuel back when in on position.
After removing petcock I replaced small oring on small plunger and stretched spring but didn't help much.
So I removed the tall yellow screened tube (comes right off, no screws) and noticed
Two fuel intake holes about the size of a baby aspirin. I plugged the one on vacum side
With epoxy steel stuff and now I have a on and off petcock.
So I believe I found a cheap fix.  Switch petcock to prime for on and on for off.
My other choices I believe were to use leaky petcock and put some sort of shut off in line or
Buy a new one. I didn't feel comfortable with a vacum petcock anyway. I took pictures and
Put them in photoshop but am having trouble putting on line.

I'd like to see those pics. My 85 petcok is leaking and I'm not sure where/ why/

I just put an inline fuel valve/switch (it was like $10.00 at Lowes) and have it poking out the right side side cover.  But then again, I'm cheap and lazy!

Be aware that when the petcock is in the prime position the only thing holding back all the fuel in the tank are 4 (sometimes fickle) needles. One tiny piece of crud and all the fuel will either leak out of the over flow tubes or back into your carbs. Back in the carbs means that the fuel flows into the cylinder, past the rings and into your oil. Replace your leaking petcock or add a shut off valve that is either vacuum or ignition controlled. It is only a question "When" the fuel will leak out, I hope you chose to be safe.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

This is good advice. Don't take the chance of a fire or a ruined engine.    Pete.

It's a pain, to shutoff my gas, by switching to run from prime, when I put away, or stop for
A while, cause of my "fix" to petcock. But it's been nice to know that I can shutoff my fuel
For sure and not rely on a vacuum petcock. When I save up 180 bucks I'll get. A new petcock
From randy. But I really think the fix is easier than a shutoff in the line, cause I tried a couple of
Different methods and the limited space under tank and fuel line routing is tough to
Fit anything in there.

That looks like a pretty good deal on the petcock, but they do not have it in stock which they explain below***. They let you buy it, use your money for several days before sending your part(s) to you. You are just paying for special order parts up front with most of these websites.

That vendor, who "usually ships in 2-3 business days" which has a small tab underneath that line with this page explains below;

***OEM Parts Inventory Status Explained

Here at 2WheelPros.com we try to provide our customers as much information available to us as possible. The inventory information we provide to you, is in turn provided to us by the OE manufacturers. Although in most cases this information is very accurate and up to date, there are some cases where this information is incorrect. Remember we can only provide you information that is available to us.

Explanation of the availability status

Usually ships within... - (with green checkmark) Part is in readily available per manufacturer, and will ship in the indicated time frame.
Usually ships within... - Part usually ships within the time frame specified per manufacturer.
Back Ordered - Part is out of stock. You may place an order and be notified when the part becomes available.
Inventory status unknown - Inventory status is not available for this part. This does not mean the part is not available, it just means that the OE manufacturer has not provided any status on this part.
This part is currently not available - The part has been discontinued by the manufacturer and/or is no longer available for purchase.

OEM Parts FAQ (and our honest answers)

What happens if I order a part and it's not available?
If a part is not available, we will notify you within 24 hours of placing your order. If the part has been discontinued, we will cancel your order and fully refund your original payment method. If a part is on back order, we will let you know and you can decide to wait or cancel the order.

Is this part in stock?
This is probably the most common question we get from our customers. The availabilty information we display on the part detail page is the most accurate information available to us.

Can you overnight the part to me?
This is probably the second most common question we get from our customers. Most of our staff are avid riders and we know sometimes you need that part "now". Unfortunately with OEM parts, the only place to get those parts is from the manufacturer. The manufacturers will not overnight the part to us or customers directly, so the information we display reflects how long it will take us to receive the part from the OE manufacturer. Once we receive the part we can overnight it to you. If you walk in to your local dealer, the process is pretty much the same. The dealer has to wait to receive the part from the manufacturer. The only difference is - you pay retail price at the dealer.

How long will the shipping take?
For most smaller OEM parts we use USPS Priority or First Class Mail to ship. USPS is faster than UPS or Fedex in most cases, usually taking 2-3 days anywhere across the country. For larger parts we will use Fedex. You will be provided a tracking number for either shipping method we use. All parts ship from Los Angeles, California.

The difference compared to me, is when you check the box on my website it means it is sitting on the shelf ready to ship to you. You cannot purchase something from me that I do not have is stock.

Plus, if you live in the US you are going to have it in your hands in 2-3 days, not just possibly getting it shipped based on the "information provided to us by the manufactures".

I do not use your money to special order parts, I use it to sell you what you need when you need it. So, I do not have to post on my website making a statement like..."our honest answers"

You could have also tried sticking a washer behind the spring to help it force shut. I found a perfectly sized rubber one that fit perfect at a local hardware store.

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.
