 Hey all,

I am doing up my '86 1TX and have a jetting question.

She's a stockie except for the UniPods and crank breather as well as carb and screw kits I'm gonna order from Randy.

I've emailed him the question of jetting but thought I'd ask here too.... :ireful:

So I don't ride her hard although I do love to feel her torque but rarely get above 6500-7000 rpm. Love that grunt in the twisties but not a boy racer you know.
I commute to work but only rarely in heavy traffic. Love the touring style of the FJ ride as well and hoping to do some longer trips around the south west here.

It can get VERY hot here in Western Australia and I am concerned about cooking my new baby. :cray:
When I say hot, it can be 2-3 months in summer when I can't get a day ride in with less than 32-35 degrees celcius on the guage ! I ride day and night summer and winter although I do avoid the worst weather.
Winter drops to a tad above zero at times and summer can get to above 40C so a big range.....

Almost all riding will be done @ 0-500 feet above sea level so I wouldn't think altittude would be much of an issue.

Again, my primary concern is heat in our weather here whilst trying not to waste fuel or compromise starting in the cold.

Any jetting advice would be most humbly appreciated !  :good2:

Cheers,
Ben

I should mention that from what I can read, I'm looking @ a 40 pilot and 115 main.

How does that sound to you carby guys ?
Anything else I should change from stock ?

Cheers,
Ben

Arnie

Probably pretty close.  You'll need to read the plugs after a proper "plug chop" to know for certain.  One other change you may want - depending on plug read - is to lift the needle by 0.5mm.  You do this by either placing the washer that will be on top of the clip to underneath the clip OR (if the washer is already below the clip) by moving the clip to the next lower groove and putting the washer above.

Heard back from Randy and he came up with 40 pilot and 112.5-115 main. Gonna go with the 112.5 main, seeing as it comes in the kit, and see how that goes.

As I'm getting the rebuild kits which come with an adjustable needle, could you also enlighten me on the starting clip position? Will it also need shimming in youir onion?

Thanx again,
Ben

G'day Ben, with the 112.5 mains I suggest placing the clip in the forth position down from the top. I'm running 117.5 mains with the clip in this position, also running pods, four into one exhaust and a 1219 Wiseco piston kit. Idle mixture at 2 1/4 turns out. Runs great. This should give you a good starting point and may need a little fine tuning.  Regards, Pete.

Thanx Pete.

I'm new to this whole carby thing. I was terrified of them before doing this but it is the first time I bothered trying since the interweb. What a revelation it is to a noob like me  :yahoo:

Funny thing is I'm self taught like many but I've never really steered clear of any new job. Rebuilt engines, gearboxes and all manner of other car and truck bits but never been comfortable with carbs !!

Anyway, having said all that, I have now read up alot on carbs, specifically the FJ Mikunis, here and the UK site and feel alot better. I think the youtube vid I found explaining the basic principles of how a CV (or any other really) works was the light switch moment for me. Then all the great advice here started to make some sense.

I was thinking, a 115 main with the needle on the 4th clip seems quite rich ? I don't want to cause any more heat than neccessary but if raising the needle to there doesn't envelope my garage in black smoke when I try it then I'll leave it there.

Luckily I'm teaching Dad to ride @ the mo so I can always ask him to go behind for a bit and ask him what he sees @ different throttle pozzies.

Benny is getting toey without his girl ready and waiting to satisfy him....

I'll try to find a link to the youtube video. I really did find it helpful and I'm sure it would help other complete carb NOOB's.

Cheers again,
Ben

Ben, if you're concerned about running hot, being a little bit rich actually helps your engine to run a bit cooler. Give your bike a hard run and pull your plugs and check the colour. There is some information about how to do a plug chop somewhere in the tons of posts on the subject. Do a search and you will find everything you ever wanted to know about reading plugs. I still think with the 112.5 mains you won't be far off the money.  Pete.   :i_am_so_happy:

Cheers Pete.

I've left the jets in the kit as are. Gonna take your advice and try with the needle out at the 4th position from top.

Read a tonne about plug chops/reading and jetting. gotten pretty good at reading plugs in cars over the years through research, trial and, more often than not, error ! LOL :wacko2: Just never really played with the fuel side of tuning for fear. :flag_of_truce:

Onwards and upwards I say ! I can read all I like but won't really learn much until I put it all into practice. Well I'm gonna have to now !! Rebuild kits, screw kit, Unipods, crank breather, seal mate, a fork brace and some grommets are all on the way..... Randy has shipped them already !!  :yahoo: :yahoo: Thanx Randy :drinks:

Too bad I saw at least another $500 bucks worth of stuff I want to get for the bike in time but for now this lot will do just fine. would have gotten a spin on oil filter adapter but it's out of stock for now.

So I am soon gonna be able to say I've rebuilt and tuned quad carbs soon. The tuning bit is what has me worried. At least it's gonna be alot easier once the pods are on.

Anyway, thanx alot Pete and Arnie and everyone who has ever posted advice on intake mods and jetting esp. The Carb Guru DavidR. I don't claim to know what I'm doing as a result of it but I do understand it a little better so,  :drinks: :drinks: :drinks: CHEERS TO ALL
