hello ,finally rode my fj for 3 hours today from stoney creek to guelph ontario after purchasing it in january.Last weekend I gave it a tune up including oil(motul 5100) and plugs(stock ngk)
the plugs were carboned up badly and the oil was just turning black(do not know the history of mateniance on this bike). The plugs being carboned up is were my first question is,were they
really old and maybe the wrong heat range(champion spark plugs) or is the bike running to rich.I also note extreme exhaust smell in my garage even with the door open and choke off ,poor gas milage i think.I owned a new 1996 fj way back and do not recall it sucking fuel like that.
Can a clogged air filter cause the carbs to run rich because i forgot check that. The bike is a 1992 abs model and runs very well considering it has 75000 k on it.My milage
was about 1/2 a tank for the trip.

Well my .02:
You can tell really worn plugs by a worn electrode and the gap will have increased, and they could be very difficult to remove.  So it's probably the fuel mixture causing the blackness and not the age of the plugs.  If your air filter is that clogged it wouldn't run properly, so although it may need cleaning/replacing that probably isn't it.

The gas smell, now you are onto something.   I would purchase a carb rebuild kit from Randy at RPM (you'd think we work commission by our frequent referrals :), but he provides excellent service and quality parts for our FJ.

You are smart to replace the Champion with NGK plugs.

One spring my '89 ran like crap after winter storage, but it ran fine only a couple of weeks before.

You would not believe the size of the mouse nest that came out of the airbox.

I had a bee's nest in my Bultaco once.  If you are checking for bees be careful, that's all I can say.
