FJwiki?

Is there any interest in starting an FJ wiki? We could have pages dedicated to specific topics--say, "Tires"--and then list everything we know about tires, broken up by 16" & 17" discussions. Everything can be interlinked.

We can also have pages dedicated to procedures, like a page detailing the conversion from stock forks to emulators.

Yes? No? Ambivalent?

Back when I was an XJ owner and an active member at xjbikes.com, I put this idea forward. I made a quick free mockup. However, the idea was completely vetoed by the xjbikes.com forum owner, seemingly because he makes decent money off of the ad deals he has in place on his forum and from his relationship with their equivalent to Randy (Chacal--a decent guy, but with prices that make you feel like he's not quite as decent as he seems...). He flatly told me to stop, in unkind terms, and I decided I didn't want drama and abandoned the project.

So that was an easy, free, hosted setup. But I can also do a proper near-perfect imitation of Wikipedia itself (they open source their web design) if we had hosted server space.

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.

Interesting idea mate,, sounds like the files page and search function rolled into one
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

I love the idea! I recently bought a BMW E30 & I have found the E30 Zone Wiki very helpful

So, it's not much right now, but I got it up:

Feel free to dive in and start editing. I'll probably be updating it slowly.

Feel free to point out anything obvious I missed, or anything you feel like it needs, or is off, etc., etc.

Hope it helps! Next time you do a project and have to research, just at least include a list of links there for reference--or go the extra mile and compile a summary of what you found!

So, I've been working away at it. The work to be done is huge, but a firm attempt at some of the basics has been put forward... You can now see some of the new articles up by looking at the "Featured Articles" on the bottom right of the home screen @ fjowners.wikidot.com.

Two people have signed up as members, but no one has yet been brave enough to edit.

Go ahead and check it out! Review the pages, correct my mistakes, add some info that you know, make a page on a topic you're well informed on! Slowly but surely, we'll have something to point new people to that will let them easily learn about new topics all in one place.

Example ways you could help right now...

  • Make a "tires" page (by going to fjowners.wikidot.com/tires and selecting "create new page", and then typing and saving) and write up a list of tires you've owned and your opinion on them.
  • Done the valve mod to your forks? go to the forks page and add a section describing out the mod is done. Bonus points if you find and add pictures of the process and link to forum posts with more info.
  • Make a skeleton luggage page
  • Make a skeleton overview page (maybe fjowners.wikidot.com/models) describing changes between different models. Bonus points for adding sources--but, if not, just do what you can and someone else can add them later!
  • Make a lights page describing the headlight relay mod, clear lens cover mod, halogen mod, and so on! Just do as much as you know about, and make a brief list for others to expand upon, if you like. Bonus points for linking to forum posts and listing vendors or RPM parts pages!
  • The list is endless!

Kyle,
I had a look at the site also, and like the concept. One stop shopping for everything FJ!

A have grown accustomed to initially researching topics using Wikipedia, and like many of its aspects.

Some of the things I have pondered about our FJ's is an illustration of the different models, highlighting the changes and providing pictures of the different color options that were available.

Here's an example of a site from the MG world that shows the different paint colors available from the factory throughout the years:

I envision having an area on your Wiki with nice, high res photos of the various stock color schemes.

Also, an area that pinpoints the subtle differences between years, so you can visualize one type of fork from another, or see the differences in suspension, or frame, or fairing, or wheels.

Yes, yes, I know, I should "just jump right in and make it all happen!" (this *IS* my intent, but I have to carefully allocate my free time. I have the club shim kit, and I'm only halfway done with my valve adjustments!)

Time to stop rambling on and get some work done!

 :morning2:

I honest to god was thinking about exactly such a page (though I hadn't though about, for instance, pictures of different forks next to each other, which is a great idea. That was my first huge area of research on this site (anyone remember that?), so it's something I know better than most.

We'll make it happen!

The editor is really incredibly easy to use, and it's no problem to just jump in. Someone else (probably me for now, but anyone later) can clean it up if you'd rather just put some plain text information.

But for those who want to get a headstart on the finer points of editing, I went ahead and put together the basics of what I've learned so far that streamlines the learning cure here. I'll continue adding to this page, but it's already pretty useful.
