prob a stupid post but thought you guys may like, brought my fj last yr as a commuter/ bike to take the girlfriend out on, im mostly in to my old oil colled gsxr's so brought the fj cos it had been left in a front garden for yrs then covered in black paint by someone so it was cheap!
anyway, i tarted it up with some cheap paint, done a few jobs on it and started using it for short comutes and taking the girlfriend out, Today i had to do about a 120 mile round trip to pick up some parts, my cars been playing up lately and as the sun was finally shining in the uk i decided id take the fj, up untill now iv only used it on country lanes and urban, today i used motorways (freeways)for the first time....What a great bike ! was smooth, fairing gave good protection, part of my journey involved tewisting country lanes 60-80mph and the fj took it all in its stride, and at the bike dealer someone even commented on what a nice bike it looked( he was on a diversion 900 so may be biased!) sure there were a couple of minor flaws, the seat got a little uncomfy, but then i do have a boney butt! and the brakes are..well crap!, but then iv not ridden a 1984 bike that has good brakes!
Its almost making me thinking bout selling my gixxer so i can buy a suzuki gt750 iv been lusting after...im struggling to see why on real roads doing real riding i need anything more than the fj...albeit with up rated brakes!

Brake upgrade is definitely a common mod. You can either get adapter plates + calipers off of an '00-ish R6 or R1, or you could upgrade the whole front end and get a 17" front wheel that can take modern rubber (wider selection of radials).

An upgraded seat is also a common 'mod', though I haven't heard many complain about the stock seat. You can find used ones on ebay every so often. Get one in rough shape and recover it and enjoy. Mine came with a nice Corbin, and I have ridden 1660 miles almost straight on it (a 4 hour nap being my only long break)... Woke up the next day after the ride and just wanted to go riding again. :)

Congrats on the find, it's probably one of the most underappreciated bikes of the decade.

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.

That's part of the the beauty, as prime-running examples can still be found, hidden away under cheap Krylon rattle can paint jobs.

Someone who's able to see past the worn exterior will be gifted with (potentially) a fine-running example. Just needs a little elbow grease, time, and dedication. Some spare cash might help, too.

Now, we've got a love/hate relationship with the Legend car racing crowd, but they're a necessary evil. Racers willing to support the FJ-based engine platform keeps it from falling into obscurity.

So... Welcome to the fold!

Fix it up and get out and ride!!!   :good2:
