Question

I just cleaned my tank and it's
The second time the carbs have come off
Due to clogged idle jets. Can I put an in line filter
In my new to me 85 FJ.
I tried a cheap plastic small filter
And it wouldn't flow.
So I ran with no filter and the bowl
Had small amount of sediment after
10 mile ride. I've read no filters then
I've read you can do it on an 85.
Thanks for advice

Doy you have rust in your tank? If so then you will be fighting this forever. Fix the rust if you have it. If not then flush out your tank and all should be well. Your 84 has a filter screen in the petcock just like my 86 and I don't run an external filter....

On yes I had some rust, tank had been cleaned before, but not well.
I used evaporust, and had good results,
Cleaned up really well. Took my time and did it twice.
The gt 750 and xs 650 if I remember had screened petcocks and most people seem to use filters in conjunction..nut the petcock in my fj is much larger inside.
I just figured why not if it you guys do it. I'm new to carb cleaning and when I saw the idle jet
And how small the opening is, man you can barely see any light at all when clean. I don't think my idle circuit
Was clean in the beginning, at least i hope. Carbs go on tomorrow again. I only found 1 damaged diaphragm,
I plastic coated it.

In the April 2011 issue of Classic Bike there was an article about bikes to make your summer, and the first one was a full page close up of an 85 red/white F/J and I had to have one. ( The perfect choice)

Pico, where are you located? If you don't mind my asking??? And welcome to the looney bin...

If you want to run a filter then it needs to be free flowing and still fit under the tank. The 84 to 87 are gravity fed so the pressure to feed the carbs is real low when the tank gets dry....

I don't know how well it actually filters but I ran one of these on a gravity feed RT100 BMW for many years. The FJ I am sure has a higher fuel flow rate at WOT.

My bike was found at a storage place, they evidently where unawhere of its existence.
It lay hidden in a unit for like 10 years. She's a 37000 mile beauty that was once on her side,
But it pulls as hard as my friends bandit or harder.

Hi Picopower.

It might be a good Idea after your sure the tank is clean, if you haven't already to replace the old fuel line too.If its perishing could be a potential source of crud in your carbs.

84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

Gidday Picopower. Welcome. I had a little bit of rust in my tank recently. I used TANK KREME on it. It can be a bit messy if you get absent minded with it. The  TANK KREME  is 3 part product. First part desolved the rust and the last part is the TANK KREME. Looks like  milk. It fixed it perfectly and left a nice white liner in the tank. NO MORE RUST. cheaper than buying a new tank.  Very well worth the effort if youve already got the tank off. Just watch out for the sender gasket. Check it for cracks. You  Can still get them new.  Jeff

I wouldn't recommend using Kreme. Anytime I have used or heard of it being used, it fails after a year or two and actually starts flaking and gumming up your carbs. Try por15 same concept better product

My Kreme is holding just fine 3 years +.. But POR 15 is also good.
