ain't about the bike, it's about the rider.  or at least my observations at the rallies.

Dean makes a good point, and I too have seen it first hand, both in my state, as well during our rallies.

And on a further note, it's not the horsepower of the bike, it's how well it handles, and for the most part, the HDs I have seen just don't have what it takes to ride a spirited ride through the twisties without becoming a rolling road block for others that soon catch them.

If you are being overtaken, be aware of it and make room for a safe pass and wave them past.
It's just the decent thing to do.
Hell, I ride an FJ with other FJs during the rally, so the bikes are for the most part, equal, but I know my skills are not at the same level as maybe over 70% of the riders there and I aware of this, which makes for a more pleasant ride for us all.

Besides, I feel I learn a lot from watching the better riders, from behind, like Dean, Andy, Mike R and a host of others show me how it's done, kind of like a real-time, hands on training session.

The only thing I have to prove to myself is that I return to the campfire that night with everything still attached!

Since buying my first American V-twin engine motorcycle (I own a non Harley "factory custom" in addition to my Harley) I have increased my tool collection (and I buy thread locker in bulk).  Finding a good Harley service department is like finding a Yamaha dealer that will work on our FJs.

At the Harley dealer (recall work) today, I spent some time talking to a man who was riding a 1986 Yamaha Venture.  Both of us have ridden several different motorcycles over the years and we respect people who ride, no matter what brand.  One of my former riding pals rode BMWs and we used to kid  each other about what the other was riding.   I would rather pick my riding companions based on who they are and not what they ride.  Once I get to know you I may give you crap about what you ride, but I also expect to get it in return.

Hah hah I love the banter. Every single one makes a good point. There are some Harley riders that are too cool to wave at me. Who cares? When push comes to shove we all help everyone else out no matter what. There are guys on Yamaha's with an attitude problem as well. ( not  FJers of course) We are so happy to see another FJ we get all giddy right?

Just the other day I saw Steve AKA (MoparMan) giving the wave to a scooter, such a nice guy to give kudos to a scooter rider.... Brings a tear to my eye...

oh and my mate with a tasty red Dyna likes to ride with me cause I carry a tool kit and its nice to ride with him cause it gives me a chance to dig the tool kit out.

Whats even funnier a few years back at a show and shine at eastern creek raceway during one of the historic race weekends he entered in the "American Iron" section his only competition was a Honda Goldwing which back then was made (assembled) in the USA.

He won but I still give him shit about it  :mocking:

here is another of my mates who really gets his arm chair moving but he is a greedy little bugga and takes the whole bloody road typical HD owner

not an HD or an FJ but this was the guy next to us at the rally, a bit over the top we thought  :drinks:

and yes Baldy it was a UC run  (popcorn)

so my point is .................. buggered if I know  (popcorn)

Thank you, This was my only point, Maybe some missed my point when I started this thread, I like having fun with other, I just don't start off with insults with people I don't know, Just isn't my way, Maybe it is for some on here, In this thread there are some just wanting to insult me, maybe it just meant in fun, or maybe not?, I don't know, As I don't know who there are, Maybe I've insulted some here by saying that no one should insult someone else just because of the style of motorcycle they chose to ride, If this is the case?, I apologize, And if by saying that no one should insult someone else in the manor, has insulted other, I would like the mods to remove this thread

Take it to the dragstrip.  I've yet to see a "very fast" streetable (no wheeliebars, no slick, gasoline fuel) harley that could even begin to keep up with...well, much of anything.  I don't know if it's a lack of rider skill, excess weight, or a lack of efficency in getting the power to the ground, but a mid-11 second pass would be an amazing run from a Harley at my local track.  Almost fast enough to catch some of the more modern 600cc streetbikes, even.  There's a local Buell racer that does quite well in the bracket classes (where consistency matters more than outright speed), but he's running 12.3's or so.
