Hepco and Becker help

Hey guys,

I scored a pair of Junior 40's and a brand new luggage rack from Hepco & Becker for my 1985 FJ1100.
However, the good folks at H&B only sent the instructions in German. Even though I have some basic knowledge of that fine language, this just doesn't make sense to me. And when I fool around with the racks, I just can't see where the mounting points should line up...
Calling you folks with Hepco and Becker racks out there, you don't happen to have the English instructions?
I guess early models should have a fairly similar setup?

I can not say for sure, but the mounting points should be similar for all models, I have a set of Hepco & Becker on my 89'. The mount points are.... 1. The muffler mount at the foort peg brackets. 2. Remove the rear turn signal mount brackets and attach to the threaded hole in the sub-frame. 3. The 10mm hex head bolt that attaches the rear plastic side cover under the passenger seat is the other attach point.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Fred.

That is close to what I could decipher from the German instructions. Referring to your numbering, the part I'm having trouble with is number 2.

If i understand everything correctly, this is the threaded hole which the rack attaches to?

But when I have the front mount point aligned with number 3...

The rack tab that aligns with number 2 is horizontal, not vertical...?

My brain isn't working today... what am I missing?

Here's another piece of the whole rack:

Is this the tab that should be mounting onto where the indicator bracket used to be?

aviationfred

The mounting tabs on your frame are a bit different than the later 1200's. Mine is actually for a 91' to 93'. The difference is that they changed the mounting a bit and moved everything rearward a bit. It does look to me that you should have a 'L' shaped bracket that is needed. Mine uses a 'U' shaped bracket to attach at the turn signal mount.

My bike is in the shop getting the head rebuilt, and closed today. Tomorrow I will go there and take some detailed photos of the attach points and post them for you.

my early model HB rack attached by pinching the bungee cord hoop.... not a very good place for a load bearing mount as i found out later.

nothing but German instructions with mine also....... some creativity is required for mounting.

Frank, what did you end up using as a load bearing point?
I'll fab up some new brackets; mounting using the bungee cord hoop seems awkward.

Nat,

Here are photos of the brackets that mount where the rear turn signal brackets mount. Hope this helps in giving you some info on what to do for brackets.

That's great, Fred. Thank you!

By the way, the SuperTrapp is getting a polish and black powdercoat for the headers, can't wait to put it on the bike when weather gets a little warmer.
