I have been searching for a 87'/88' FZR1000 front wheel for some time. The search has turned up nary a one. I did a p/n cross check and found that the 87'/88' FZR750R front wheel is the same part number. I found a 88' FZR750R front wheel on eBay. The wheel should arrive in a few days, the white paint is flaked off in a few places and the wheel will be sent out to get powder coated.

Yeppers, the 1987 FZR1000 and 750R were red wheels and the 1988 FZR1000 and 750R were white wheels... Good reminder, Thanks Fred! Enjoy!

Congrats! I sent the owner an e mail and he said it was a 3.5 X 17. I was tempted to bid on it but I have to many irons in the fire as is.
I am glad someone  in the group got it ! Let us know how it turns out. Wasn't the wheel from your local area ?

Sort of. The seller is in Kansas City. About a 3 hour drive North East of here.

Powder coat? I just did mine:-) Did them white though. I did get warned that they would be a bitch to get clean. But white just looks bad ass good on the FJ  :good2:

Whant to check out my photos on the bike??

I just found and purchased an 89 FZR 1000 rim as well. White $ 60 , and 65 to powder coat it black. Bike bandit had Pilot 2CT's for the front on for $101.75. Another piece of the puzzle coming together.

How are you going to approach mounting the wheel ? I am thinking of doing the same as 89 -91 wheels are easier to find in good condition. They also have mechanical speedo drive.

Choices seem to be:

1. Drilling the strut legs out to 17mm (FJ I think is 15mm) and Helli coil the other leg to fit the 89-91 Axel. Note: the Axel length is shorter by ?? mods, mods, mods :)

2. Or have a machine shop bore out the 89-91, 40 mm diameter bearing wheel bearing cups to 42 mm diameter to use the stock FJ bearings?  I have to find a machine shop that will do this. I do not know how much "meat" is in the 89-91 wheel cup area I am only guessing that you could remove 2mm (a shade more than 5/64").

3. There is another way but even more custom machining of a bushing...

Or I am way off base and missing something which is very possable as I am planning this using information from the forum and internet. Everything on the internet is true, right.... I don't have a wheel on hand yet.. :) Just things rattling in my mind.

Good morning George,

I had the 3.5'' rim machined to accept the stock bearings (1991) at a local machine shop. Cost was $100 and took only a few hours.
The added advantage is that you can use the stock axle, which Mr. Conlon ensures me is the best way to go...!

Have a good day,

Mike Ramos.

movenon

Thank you, I was thinking the same. Which bearing did you use ? The FJ bearing looks to to be 1mm wider ?
Drilling out the leg would cost about 70.00 in tools (Helli coil tap kit costing the most, drill bit is inexpensive) then you have to deal with the Axel bolt length issue which I think is slightly shorter.

Yes indeed, the 15mm axle is a perfect match to your 41mm fork tubes..... Don't change it...

Actually, you only have to remove 1mm from the thickness to gain 2mm on the diameter of the bearing cup.

TNX Pat. I agree. Just getting the facts before I buy a wheel.

I got the header pipes ready for polishing. Just waiting for a little sunshine and the temps to rise before heading back out into the garage.

Next decision to make is tire size for the rear 170 or 180.... I would like the 180/55. With the F4i shock in the 1990 FJ rear at 13" c to c the rear will be high. I know that I will have to make some new dogbones. Just trying to not take all the dimension adjustments out with the dogbones. A little here and a little there so to speak. I could use the lower profile on the tire, just concerned about chain to tire clearance.

Thanks Dave, you are right. Talking diameter not linear distance.  :dash2:

Hello again,

Yes, I did use the stock bearings, there is plenty of material in the stock rim.

Ah, Pat the word I meant is "assured"... & I do thank you for the confirmation...!

Keep smiling & ride safe.
