so i just recieved  a free 1985 yamaha fj1100 runs and goes great but i need to do something with this godawful ugly tail... any ideas? also any other mods to make it look better.... my front cowl is broken as well...

Welcome new guy, free and running is a good deal. We have had a few here that put on other tails and others chopped them. What did you have in mind?
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.
