My brother was first on the scene of this accident last week. The Great Ocean Road is as its name suggests, and a mecca for tourists, particularly bikes, from all over the world.
Eagle eyed Aussies will immediately see from the skid mark and debris trail what has happened.
This group of riders were from Holland on rented bikes and made the classic mistake of pulling out from a roadside lookout and heading off on the wrong side of the road and the lead rider hit an Irish tourist in a rented van head on. They said they had discussed this very thing only an hour earlier.
A short while later on the same road my brother was approaching a rental van with an Asian driver coming out of a side road. He backed off, covered his brake and sure enough she looked the other way and then turned right into his path. It was not too close because he half expected it.
I travel this road a lot and have seen this many times. It is worse off season because there are always tourists but insufficient traffic to remind them until they are well under way.
Much of the road is so tight that the head on's are low speed and usually involves two cars and not newsworthy. Ones involving bikes are usually fatal.
It is a common enough occurrence that the Govt. has erected these signs along the road.

I can only compliment the aussie's on their sensible choice of which side of the road they should ride/drive on along with the kiwi's, Japanese, much of Africa and India! If they were Dutch, probably from Amsterdam so we won't comment on any cultural stereotypes involving the use of cannabis!

I can't think of any other loonies that would choose to drive on such a rediculous side of the road!!
A life has been well lived, if you have planted trees under who's shade you do not expect to sit.

I'm told I'm cynical, pessimistic and generally miserable. I say that I'm realistic! The fact that reality sucks is not my fault!
