I see a few people have put HID conversions on there FJ. Am not certain to the legal aspect here in Victoria, as its not a standard thing, other than new cars have them in. What I want to know is,  what is the best light wattage to put in that wont stress the electrical system. Is it the standard globe or  standard +100 insert regards jeff

If you put in a headlight relay, you may find that the improvement with the standard wattage is enough.

Did you stay with the 6000k bulb?

And was there a noticeable difference in how much brighter the light was at night?

Fred
A 6K bulb will look Blue, a 4.5 or 5K will look more white and brighter to the human eye. Any 6K to 4.5K will give you way more light than any stock H4 with a relay giving full power to the bulb. And an most HID kits will not require a relay.

Yep, I agree. Do the headlight relays first..... You will be pleasantly surprised.

I put the DDM 55 watt 6000k HID kit on my 86.  Liked it alot, very bright.

Before that I ran a 55/100 halogen, which was bright on high also.  Be careful with these.  I left it on high beam during the day by accident on a road trip.  It melted a solder connection in the high\low beam switch.  Had to ride about 200 Km in the dark with no high beam :negative:

And the OP did mention that he was concerned about legality of an HID mod.      :pardon:

You must not have the relay mod.  In addition to giving more light from the halogen bulbs, it will prevent pulling excess current through the stock wiring should you choose to install a high wattage bulb.

Piss off!!!

But to answer the question as the man points out, it seems to pass the UK MOT. Any one in Canuk land with HID passing the annual check???

Yeah, i can't say I know anyone here with HID inserts on a bike. In cars, yes, (NEW) my wifes cars got them  but the law are strict on that here. HIDs in driving lights Ive heard of and I don't know if they are even legal but people still do it .New cars have them but they are ADR(Australian Design Rule ) compliant.  Jeff

You're right David, no relay.  Was considering putting in a relay, but the HID kit has one included.
