86 swingarm on a 91

Hey guys.  Anyone here ever mount a swingarm from an 86 on a 91+ model?

Derek. Ive often wondered if you could use newer linkages on an 86/87. So you could have adjustable dog bones. On an 86/87

Hi Dan.  I have 2 86 swingarms and was mulling over putting one on my 91.  I want to maintain the dogbone style suspension.  Looks like a bit of fabrication would be involved.

It can be done with the 89/90, I purchased the link arm recently, will be collecting the bits to have dog bones on my 86' (reverse of the question asked but the bits are a bolt on). Add an RPM shock and I will cornering in style...

Not much help here but I have my 1990 swingarm off at the present time if you need any measurements or photo's... Doing some shock work and wheel change. It will be apart for another week or two.

OK, I just got back in and will go out tomorrow and shoot some pic's. It's dirty because haven't got to the clean up phase. Work in progress. Just pulling apart now and doing some "engineering" on the shock and removing a broken stud out of the rim I am using.

Thanks for the pics.  That the F4i shock?  Hope you don't need to adjust the preload...

Surprisingly, the preload is no more difficult to adjust than the wimpy OEM shock that Yamaha fitted originally.  IOW, its difficult but it can be done.

Yes it's an F4i shock. Work in progress.... It looks like that I will be able to adjust the preload with the right tool. I am in the "will it fit, fitting, fabrication phase" right now. At present I am trying to modify a polyurethane shock grommets for the upper end of the shock. Then the GSXR wheel assembly gets roughed in so I can determine how much to adjust the dogbones. Arnie has been down this road before and I am kinda following his and others path on this project.
If I don't like the F4i conversion then I can always stand on the street corner and beg for money until I get enough to buy an aftermarket one . I am not a hard rider so it will probably work for me. A little time and a total cost of less than 65 dollars works for me at this point.

Also as a note I am thinking about finding an F3 or F2 shock nitrogen air hose so I can relocate the canister up on the frame where the old FJ shock adjuster went. I found a fellow here that will recharge my shock for 10.00. Just need to locate a longer hose. More measuring and engineering required .

Here is some dogbone data for anyone that wants to know:

My 1990 stock dogbone Material is stamped steel, it is 105mm C to C. 5.45 mm thick, total length 135mm long, hole dia. 12mm. 18mm wide at thinnest part of bone.

Close US measurements with tape measure holes 4 5/32" C to C, ½" dia holes
3/16" thick, 5-5/16" long.

It is surprising how thin of material that the bone is at 5.45mm (approx 3/16").
