You know those things you don't really need until you have one then wonder how you ever lived without it.
This bike lift is definitely one of those.

They are like hens teeth second hand and need to be local because of size and weight.

I have been looking for over a year and passed on a number of the flimsy red ones, wanting a 3XW blue one for it's stronger frame and smoother operation.

How did I ever live without it!!!!

Hummmm.... Some tubing, angle iron, piston with 6" stroke, diamond plate, a little weld and Red paint. I think I need to crack open SolidWorks and start a digital build of this handy tool. I wonder how much of this I can get from scrap metal from work.... I needed a new project, thanks.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Mark, I like making stuff, far more rewarding, even if it's easier and cheaper to buy. I have most of the materials, except for the diamond plate, lying around, plenty of bottle jacks that would suit, wheels, tubing etc,  big ass mig welder, cut off saw and so on. (I even have an adjustable height work table now so no more fabricating on the floor)
There are plenty of plans available on the net but when I really got down to it, it's a lot more work than you think and $350 second hand, making one just seemed way too hard. Unless of course you seriously have more time than activities to fill it with.
Having said that can I reiterate just what a wonderful thing this is, even if just for bike cleaning. I have also found many other uses for it.

Seriously DAD.... you've got too much room or not enough toys in the shed of yours!

Dad, speaking of big ass things, that's some shed you've got.

Noel - totally off-topic - but what is up with the horse saddle on the other FJ?  And the mannequin for that matter?  Shiny FJ though!   :good2:

It's 36 feet by 50 feet, and *still* isn't big enough!

Yes, well, that's Boris, my "companion" of 35 years. In my single years I lived by myself and he stood beside my lounge chair dressed in tails with a napkin over his arm holding a drinks tray in one hand and an open cigarette case in the other. I would change his outfit occasionally for parties or occasions or the seasons. it freaked out first, second, third.... tenth time visitors. When married, my wife tolerated him in remote parts of the house until a visit from my mother-in-law. He was standing on a staircase landing against a window with one arm raised. My mother-in-law encounted him on a middle of the night trip to the bathroom and it nearly finished her off (the jokes just flow at this point don't they). He has been banished to the garage ever since, destined to see out his days wearing my old leathers and still spooking the odd visitor. There are many funny stories from his early party days with me but the one I'll never get over is the urge (after a few drinks) young women seemed to have to be photographed with him, striking a provocative pose, rubbing him up and allowing him to put his hands places and holding body parts I could only dream of. A pracitce I never discouraged.
Thanks Marsh, you've just given me a very enjoyable hour revisiting those days.
Do I get expelled from the forum for being a weirdo with this admission?

The saddle. My daughters tack room is overflowing and I hate things on the garage floor. Mind you, if I hadn't cut back on the drinking the bike would be covered in cowhide and have horns on the front by now.

What do you mean? This forum *IS* to where I was expelled...!!??!!

The saddle looks oddly "at home" on the FJ. Might be funny to design a "saddle seat" for real. It would DEFINITELY stand out from the crowd!

Wear a cup for the quick stops, though!

You'd need a 10-gallon hat/helmet, too.
