Shim Caliper.

Took my rear caliper apart today and after looking at the parts fiche on Partzilla, it looks like i am missing parts no 12 and 13. I can only assume these are important? Whatever way the brakes have been operating in the past the disc now has a lip on the outer edge so will have to be replaced. Are there many options on discs for an 87?

I have never had the stock rear caliper apart, so I don't know the answer to your shim problem. I do have a good, working 89' stock rear caliper. The 87' and 89' use the same calipers. I can send it to you for the cost of shipping.

Is the wear on both sides , maybe someone fitted longer pads and they didnt touch the whole disc
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

I have my 86' rear brake and original rotor in the garage, I will check when I get home for these parts. It looks like they clip to the back of the brake pad and add thickness. Maybe for anti-squeal? If I have them I will let you know and will have a better guess on what they do. I will also check pad alignment to the disc, I think the lip is normal. You just have well worn disc. I rarely use my rear disc for braking, only when I am mostly vertical like stopping at a light and freeway off ramps. Others like to use the rear brake alot. My rear disc should last another 20 years.

Not much use in having them if u don't use them but then again I suppose you also have to go fast enough to make use of them!!  :rofl2:

I must have sold my rear caliper, its not in my pile of old 86' parts. But the pad marks on the rotor do not go clear to the edge. A well worn rotor will develop a lip at the outer edge.

Maybe there are some other members with 84/87 FJs that go fast enough to use their rear brake and need to change them soon. They can identify the parts. Maybe Randy knows.

Those are just anti-rattle shims, they are not required and the fact they are missing did not cause the lip on the rotor.

If you really want them I can get them for you.

Thanks as ever gentlemen. Looks like my rear disc is just very worn. Was a little worried about the missing parts but clearly they are not compulsory.
Had it all stripped down and cleaned and it's working as well as it should. I don't use it a whole lot either.

A good tip on the rear rotor is replace it with the right front rotor from the front wheel of an fj that had anti dive 84-87 .  same part.

A lot of us have them laying around after our front end mods.

do not attempt to resurface them.  The lip is normal wear.

I am sure my rear rotor is still in spec if you want it, apparently I don't ride fast enough to wear it out.... At least the Power Ranger suit make me look really fast.  :biggrin:

I use the rear brake all the time.... a little rear trail braking is very handy in the twisties to help tighten your line thru a turn without upsetting the chassis.... say..... when you find yourself carrying a bit more speed into a corner than prudent! 

the faster you are going the better it works. :good2:
