rear brake calipers

hi all...... im interested to know if a rear break  caliper from a 3cv model will fit onto a later 3xw. i have to replace mine and im struggling to find a decent used caliper. what are the oprions here re calipers from other models.? ive been offered a new caliper but its from a 3CV!!! all advice greatfully accepted.  cheers ian

Replace the whole wheel assembly with one of the many 17" options. Other than that, I am sure someone here has a good rear caliper, seeing how so many of us have upgraded.

The have different numbers but could fit, don't quote me as right.

I was using a front left from an 1100, or early 1200, as a rear on my 3CV and later on my XJR.

I'm pretty sure all FJ rear calipers are the same. A while back I used a TDM850 caliper on rear of my '91 3XW. It looked the same except for being silver. It fitted but I had to put washers between the caliper and the holder to centre it on the disc.

It appears that the early, up to '87, bikes used a single piston caliper with only a single bleeder nipple.
The later, '89 and up, bikes used a double piston caliper with dual bleeder nipples.
Both calipers used the identical brake pads.

So, there is a difference, but as long as the mount holes are the same distance apart either should work.

All the FJ rear calipers are the same 2-piston with double bleeders.

YZF 600 caliper will also work, but its pad-to-pad spacing is slightly narrower due to the thinner non-vernilated rotors.

When I put the YZF 600 rear wheel on, I used the inner half of the YZF caliper and mated it to the stock FJ outer half (the YZF caliper had a big scape on its outer half and did not say "YAMAHA" on it).

If you compare the work with coverting to your YZF600 rear wheel to those other explained in this forum (gsx etc) was it easier or harder?

Check the files section for the conversions.  The YZF conversion needs a bit of machine shop work but then bolts up.  You need all of the 600 parts axle, spacer, disk, caliper bracket and caliper stay.  For the front YZF 600 conversion you need the complete triple tree and axle spacers etc.  You need to change the triple so the fender will fit.

The YZF600 fork conversion uses '87-'88 FZR1000 Triples, which also get minor machine work.
