Fuel Tank Swaps.

The tank off my "87" is not in the best condition and whilst in the process of cleaning it up i have discovered a pin hole leak. I think the tank is repairable with a little braising and a good clean out ( electrolosis maybe ). Anyone had any success with other products or repairs to a pin hole?
Worst case scenario is another tank so which years will swap on to mine?

good news is all fj fuel tanks fit all years . with some minor differences.

a direct swap would be 86-87.....84-85 is a wee bit larger fuel capacity and a different gas cap and pet cock.

89-93 uses a fuel pump so the fuel line and petcock are different but usable.

california tanks have smog vents that can be plugged and then used as normal.

so the short answer is use any tank and just swap your current petcock onto it. :good2:

to the point of repairing your tank , a product for sealing your holes is CREAM tank coat. This forms a plastic like sealant inside your tank and works well.

there are other products as well out there ,just make sure you prep the tank well with a cleaner that takes care of any rust inside.

be patient with the setting up seal process if you rush it or the temp is off you will have a problem.

You are a bit off. The 84 through 87 are bolt on's the 89 & up tanks will fit on the bike but the petcock has a different bolt pattern so the vacuum petcock will not fit.

Unless they have changed their product, I do not recommend Cream. BTDT what a mess.

In my opinion, Por 15 is a much better product. Follow the directions closely.  It's all about proper prep work.

Bad experiences with CREAM too. Would try POR-15 like Pat recommended -- no personal experience, but is where I'll put my time and money next time

My 84  gas tank looks good outside,inside is crap.Just read up on Por-15.

Think if i do go down the sealer route i'll go with the por15. My only reservation is the nature of our tanks with all the ripples on the bottom might make it tricky to get an even coat. As has been said it's all down to the prep. Have been swishing around a light chain inside and it's coming up pretty good so far.

I've fixed tanks with galvanized rivets and silver soldered over the top, underside of tanks anyway,, por 15 works great.
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

Here is some info and photo's of a tank cleaning. They used POR 15. As a note mine came with a "Kream" coat in it when I bought it and hasn't given me any problem. As a matter of routine maint I do change out the fuel filter once a year. I don't know if it is the preferred way but I keep my fuel tank topped off during the winter with additive. It should not be to hard to locate another tank for your bike and with a used one I would clean and seal it just because. Good luck and riding..

I have an 86/87 tank, but it was stripped of paint so some work is required to look nice.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Shipping too expensive from you to me, but thanks for your consideration. You never know when you might need it yourself.

Does anyone use a filter on an 87 gravity fed system? Are there issues with restrictive flow?

I have a different set of carbies on the bike now which don't like the fuel pump so currently I have the fuel direct from the tap but I know that if my carbies leak I'm in trouble. Mark made a comment that the petcock is different to the 87 models (my fj is 3CV 1990).
My question, is there a vacuum petcock that fits my tank direct.
First major bike in my life was a Mach III widow maker.
My Second permanent bike 1978 Z1R (owned since Dec 1977)
My Third permanent bike is the 89 FJ12 - nice and fast
Forth bike 89 FJ12 my totally standard workhorse
